approo515 maintained this last year but hasn't been around in a while so I'll start this thread up. You guys can bump it/remind me/yell at me when I fail to update the first post.
Since this thread in years past had started as the Artist Direct Confirmation
[/u] thread we would like to go back to that. Get the confirmations from the bands themselves. Ideally you could get an answer at a concert/show or get them to respond on twitter or facebook. If they have a public e-mail address then go ahead and try that.
Stick with contacting artists. Please leave the bookers/managers and all that alone. We can't control what you do but from now on if your confirmation comes from that we won't use it. They're clearly annoyed by it and since we know SF/ACE are aware of this we don't want to piss off the wrong people. Also don't want to get anyone in trouble. Needs to come from the artists directly.
We appreciate the enthusiasm and effort of everyone who has contacted anyone in the past. It's been great but we'd like to take this thread back to what it originally was. It's more fun to get it from the band themselves anyway. Thanks everybody....back to your regularly scheduled program [/quote]

Can we set up ground rules for this thread? I think talking to bands at shows is perfectly fine, but contacting booking agents and getting them to leak stuff is totally out of bounds. Booking agents aren't supposed to leak that their bands are performing at Roo and coaxing them into doing so could have adverse professional consequences.

I agree completely. Lying to booking agents seems to be a bit much. Talking to bands at a show or on twitter/facebook is fair game IMO.

Even if you're not really lying I think it's out of bounds. Unless you say "hey, btw I'm going to post any answer you give me on a public message board" it's inappropriate.
Eh, I don't know about that. If Joe Internet e-mails the booking agent for Frank Ocean and is all "hey man, I'm thinking about Bonnaroo this summer, any chance Frank is there?" and the agent answers, what's the problem? There's no expectation of privacy there. If anything, it'd be inappropriate for the agent to leak it, but I don't see anything wrong with asking.
Also, I think asking artists on Twitter and Facebook directly is fine, right?
It has nothing to do with the expectation of privacy. I think it's unethical to ask in the first place, particularly with the intention of posting it here. Booking agents aren't supposed to discuss the line-up in the first place and I don't think there should be a thread on Inforoo that encourages people, directly or indirectly, into coercing the info out of booking agents.

I can see both sides of it. Juggs' example seems fine. Simple request and if they give an answer - cool. If they deny an answer - cool and it should be left at that. No need to trick the agents into anything. Like last year there were times where people would send mulitple e-mails to booking agents pretending they wanted to book an artist for the date of Roo and that is definitely a bit much IMO.
Basically...just keep it casual. We don't need any lineup superspies who can manipulate info out of people lol.

This will be my first and last post in this thread. My personal boycott of it begins now. I was a main contributor to this cause last year, and while it was fun and we found a great deal of inside information out, it was a lot of work and most importantly took a LOT of fun and surprise out of the lineup drop for me.
Good luck on your sleuthing, y'all. Hopefully the info found out in here doesn't spill over too much into the other threads, I fear I'll have a hard time avoiding it.

It definitely does take some fun out of the lineup reveal and big surprises. There's always a few things we don't figure out but it's still not the same as being totally blank and finding out on the day they announce the acts.

official denials: David Gilmour, and The Tragically Hip. None of these were expected just Im a huge hip fan so I felt I might as well ask there agent, and when I emailed about Gilmour last year the guy said "no shows this year...look to 2013" so when I asked him again this year he said "sorry....look to 2014"
Post by Auston City Limits on Nov 5, 2012 12:53:39 GMT -5
Just to be clear when I say asked the agent I didnt lie to them. Said Im probably going to bonnaroo wonder if theyll be there. For the hip I also mentioned that I want to see them cause I go to the only large college town in Ontario they arent playing

I don't think too many people are paying attention to inforoo's artist direct confirmation thread? If we are gathering information, and we're asking agents for simple yes/no answers, and posting it here, how many people realistically are finding out about it? I'm just asking what everyone thinks, not trying to be snarky.

You'd be surprised at how many people read things firsthand here. On top of that, Consequence of Sound (and probably others) use this board as a resource for reumors that they then repost on their sites.

I definitely remember how things went down last year, with CoS using this thread as a direct link. I just wonder how many people obsess about 'roo throughout the entire year the way we all do and are even aware of these sites.
I kinda think of the artist direct confirmation thread as inforoo's gift to itself, for all its members' hard work and stalker-ish qualities.
Booking agents know what they can and can't do. The info they give is about smaller bands and even then it's usually a "no they will be at X" or "possibly".
I spent way too much time on this last year so I think I will try and stay away from this thread.

I'm certainly not a fan of restricting information. This site is for sharing information, if you no longer want it then stop reading at anytime. I'll be digging again where ever possible.
It's SUPER early for many artists to know if they're playing Roo, I wouldn't put much effort into contacting them.
Yeah I don't think you're going to get very accurate info asking this early on, especially in regard to undercard acts who quite possibly haven't even been contacted yet. I'll try send out a bunch of emails again, but I'll wait until about the first week of the new year to do so. I hope we find out some good stuff.
Posing as a booking agent is definitely crossing the line. Please don't do that (and this is coming from someone who posed as a pregnant woman asking about bands haha).
I just posted for someone to start this. I am behind. I just tweets out to Cut Copy, Dirty Projectors, and Frank Ocean.
ITM, if it is not to much trouble can you post the links next to each artists of denies or confirms. If it is don't worry about, but it helped out last year
