Disney bought out LucasFilm Ltd and announced plans to make new Star Wars movies. Yes, movies. Plural. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and in a state of semi-shock right now.

He definitely was. Watched an interview with him and Kathleen Kennedy, new head of LucasFilm, and GL said he's handed over several story treatments for how he sees the story going so they have something to work from.

If it doesn't have Hayden Christiensen delivering lines such as "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth," I don't want anything to do with it.
But seriously, was hoping they'd just leave it alone after the last trilogy provided like .75 good movies.
I'll admit I'm curious what will happen with Star Wars now. I grew up a huge nerd fer the original trilogy and got into the comics and novels fer years. Pretty much up until The Phantom Menace. But I think there is potential to tell great stories. Whether or not that will happen...

I'm happy to see it taken away from GL, to be honest. I mean, yeah, he created all the greatness, but he's proved he can't really hack it with the prequel trilogy. I see endless possibility here. Disney's backing it, so they can pretty much pull any and everything off.

Yeah, anyone who is super worried about this has totally forgotten about Phantom Menace.
George Lucas doesn't have the rights anymore, but I read that he will be retained as a "creative consultant". He will have an impact on the story writing but not the extent that he had with the prequels. Also, he won't be directing which should help tremendously with them sucking less than the prequels.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Also this gem:
OBI-WAN: Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil.
ANAKIN: From the Jedi point of view! From my point of view, the Jedi are evil.

I'm staying optimistic about where this could go. It would take real effort to make something worse than some of things GL put in the prequel. Like, every damn love scene and their Terrible dialog. Jar Jar Binks.

Listen Cheyne-Stokes, don't go crushing my dreams here, keeping me awake all night worrying if this next installment is going to be a nightmare of epic proportions.

I think it'll be highly unlikely if we see any of the original big three in it. Ford will probably want too much money. Carrie Fisher is too fat to be a princess anymore. Mark Hammill pretty much just does voice work now too. So yeah very interesting to see how they'll tie those characters in.

One of the funniest lines ever to me is Jimmy Smits' "babies?" after the doctor reveals Organa is having twins at the end of III. I'm sure he's trying to emphasize plural baby, but it comes off like he has no idea what babies are.
I think that creative consultant is the way to go with Lucas. I think that if he had given an outline of each movie to somebody else, let them flesh it out and write the dialogue the prequels could have been good. Or at least a lot less cringe-worthy.
I have no idea what direction they are going but I suspect that they will be a generation or so removed from Luke-Han-Leia. I hope that they find a way have Nathan Fillion in as Solo's next-gen or something. He's always seemed like Harrison Ford's heir. (I'm entirely biased towards him though so I admit that it's unlikely to transpire.)
It seems like the next logical step is to discuss directors. My personal choice would be Joss Whedon but since he's got Avengers 2 lined up for 2015 he's probably out. They'll probably go with a relatively unkown director but I would be happy with Peter Jackson or maybe JJ Abrams. Admittedly, neither are terribly shocking suggestions.
I would be happy that finally someone has saved George Lucas from himself, but the thing is that Disney hasn't really put out a good live-action film in awhile. Hell I think Disney's last decent entry altogether was whatever they made prior to splitting with Pixar.

YES YES YES YES. I love both these ideas!
Edit: I forgot to add that while the prequel trilogy is mostly garbage, Revenge of the Sith is almost on-par with the originals. Loved that movie!
Excuse me, I must now go re-watch Firefly (again).
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
If you're like me and think that the franchise has taken a serious, continuous raping since the releases of the original trilogy in the Special Editions of the late 90s, you would have thought they couldn't do anything than what's been put out since then... well, get ready.
Honestly, Ep. 1 and 2 were horrible, with 2 being among the worst movies I have EVER seen in a theater. 3 was enjoyable, but still... not particularly good. The only thing Star Wars related that I have gotten any significant enjoyment out of in the last 15 or so years was the video game Knights Of The Old Republic that Bioware put out in 2003.

Bishop, you're right. Nothing outstanding has been released with a Star Wars name on it in years. KoTOR was great, and so were the Battlefront games, yet they for some reason won't give us Battlefront 3? And as far as the Expanded Universe goes, there hasn't been a good post-RotJ story line for a while now. The last arc, Fate of the Jedi was laughably bad.
So, yeah, I don't see anything classic or groundbreaking like the Original Trilogy coming out of this, but I think it'll do the brand some good. Maybe not a whole lot, but still some.
