My sister is in DC (well Alexandria) and last year my mom and I freaked out and wouldn't leave her alone about getting a hotel room a little further inland in case of flooding.
This is going to be really ugly. My local forecast:
As we get into the mid-and-late afternoon, rain is heavy everywhere and sustained winds ratchet up to 35-45 mph with gusts to near 60 mph.
Tonight: Rain remains heavy during the evening and winds are just as bad as during the day, maybe even a little worse, sustained at 35-50 mph from the west with gusts to around 65-70 mph.
By comparison, the derecho in June had winds of 60-70 mph and only lasted 30 minutes or so here. Over 1 million people in the DC area lost power. And this is will be a 36 hour event.
I'll be working from home until the power goes out.
Stay safe all my Mid Atlantic & East Coast friends.
Hah, thankfully my office shut down today, mainly because NYC transit is completely shut down.
Right now it's a little windy and a consistent light rain. I honestly couldn't even tell it was raining this morning until I left my place to go grab breakfast.
Those of us who are usually in hurricane country as thinking of you. Stay safe and dry, abd try not to listen to the weather/news for more than a few minutes an hour. You're more likely not to go crazy that way, trust me, been there

I'm in Western PA and we've really just got a light drizzle going on. Wind is getting gnarly though; lots of schools starting to close too. My campus is already shut down for the rest of the afternoon and tomorrow.
It's alright here. Some wind, some rain, supposed to get worse later. Down on the coast they got flooding issues already. Some towns, esp near the coast, are losing power like crazy.
Horrible and yet very good timing: my buddy just posted on Facebook that "It's about time Jersey took a shower." I can't decide whether to like the post or tell him he's an as*hole.
sending love and good vibes from afar...stay safe, guys. Thinking of my stranded panda friends as well. I wish that I could send you all some electricity, warm soup, a hug and yes, some xanax.

Quack you, Sandy. Mother Nature says "trick" this year. I hope for the best for everyone. High winds expected here in Pittsburgh too- my house is surrounded by trees :-( so I'm a lil worried.
I just got a very comforting email from Alexandria that says:
"Hurricane Sandy is about to get worse. Think of the derecho storm with high winds in June that lasted 24 minutes. The winds we’re about to experience beginning this afternoon are like the derecho, but they will last for 24 hours. To paraphrase: Instead of 24 minutes of dangerous winds, it will be 24 hours of dangerous conditions."
I feel SOOO much better now. I get that they're trying to get folks off the road and prepared, but still...
the wind is really picking up here, and we're still about 2 1/2 hours out of the worst of it
EDIT- and the lights keep dimming
Hold on. Turn your heat up high so that if you lose power, maybe your place will stay warm for a bit longer. I plan to do this tonight- roast my house. I went without power for a week in FL after Ivan, but the temps were in the upper 80's. I don't like the thought of days without power in these temps.
Up here in Connecticut, all highways are closed. Bridges over major rivers are closed. Some towns have 50% of people or more without power. Down near the coast the tides ran really high and areas are flooded.
Fawn sent me a text about two hours ago, her and Quacker have no power where they are.
Y'all, Im a praying girl, so I'm gonna say that I've been praying for everyone in the storms way, especially my chosen Inforoo fam. You guys be alert - and don't be afraid to hide in your basement or closet! If it gets that bad, your pride isn't worth your life.

I'm in Northeast Jersey, about fifteen minutes from NYC. Wind's been getting pretty bad, lots of downed trees and debris blowing around. Rain hasn't been too bad yet, I hear we might miss a lot of the heavy stuff. Stay safe everybody.

If it's not to late where you are, move your car to somewhere with no trees. The gusts of wind here are beginning to be accompanied by car alarms from falling branches.

A car parked outside my place missed a tree falling on it by about a foot. My office closed for tomorrow already, and they never do that.
