We need a wine thread. We have a freaking thread about crappy cereal and pancakes and waffles and whatnot and beer and whozit and cats etc....etc.... Underrated in the festival going music loving young people of America needs to get more love.
^ ABSOQUACKINLUTELY!!! ;D
*NOTE*: This is a thread for people who love WINE, not people who love to WHINE. kthnx.
OK, fellow oenophiles and lushpuppies who prefer to enjoy grapes in their intended fashion, here's where we can discuss our appreciation of that luscious liquid which is not beer or other spirits.
There are some among us who can recommend the perfect vintage to pair with any meal. We even have a viticulturist amongst our ranks (hi, Daniroo! ), so let's share some of our favorites. It might help enlighten those who haven't ventured down the wine aisle of their favorite liquor store because their knowledge of wine (and/or their budget) has been limited thus far to this:
Y'all, the wine world has SO. MUCH. MORE. to offer than good ol' "Two Buck Chuck"!
Soooo...what are your favorites? What's been pleasing your palate lately?
I usually keep a few bottles of this budget Zinfandel in stock, because despite its inexpensive price tag, it is surprisingly enjoyable and doesn't taste cheap.
^^ Holls, I use to buy that buy the case load. I have been drinking that wine for 9 years. Zins in general and that one in particular are a great introduction to the world of better wine. It is heavier than most varieties, (meaning more alcohol), a bit fruitier, and some spice to it.
I have tried almost everything by that vineyard, and I would also recommend the Incognito Rouge. It is a great varietal. Nice and light, it incorporated everything great about the 7 deadly zins, but takes some of the edge off.
If you are looking to move up in class, I recommend the Earthquake Petite Syrah. It is even heavier, but more balanced than the 7 Deadly Zins.
The rest of the winery, especially the more expensive stuff is really not worth it.
Currently drinking: Rosenblum Rockpile Road Zin 2007 Wine Rating: 92-96 (depending on the review) Ave. Price: $37
This wine is an incredible Zin from my favorite vineyard. I got a cases several years ago, and we broke into them recently. It has gotten even better with age. Lighter than most zins, it is much more balanced, and has a dark sweetness to it that most Rosenblum wines do not. There is also a earthy, smokey undertone in the wine as well, that really makes this a great fall wine.
In case you cannot tell, I love wine, and have spent entirely too much on it. Took about a 2 year break and worked on Liquor, but I am getting back into it in a big way.
The problem with wine isn't the wine, it's the people who drink wine. It's absolutely true that the more expensive the wine is not necessarily the better the wine. Sometime it's true that the cheaper the wine, the worse the wine, but that mostly applies to the Gallo secondary markets.
Anyway, Many of my favorite wines are my favorites because they're ones that I used to serve or ones that come from cool vineyards.
So this is one of my favorite vineyards in Napa - total party atmosphere. And with kids asleep, that is what we are opening right now in la casa toml30.

Sipping on a Verdelho - 2011 from Quinta Cruz in the Santa Cruz mountains. I know nothing about its price or rating. But I know we have half a case, which is a good thing.
WINE!!!!! Yay! I just drink whatever I pick up. Half of the time, I can't even tell you the next day what I was drinking the night before. This is a warning because I might have had something you've posted twice over, but I probably won't know (unless it's a well known brand)! Also, half of the time, I am drinking Bota Box!
I can actually tell you all what is open right now, however. I had my parents and brother over for dinner on Sunday and we went through 3.5 bottles of wine! I finally opened up a bottle that I got for my birthday two years ago (but I don't do noirs so it has been sitting).
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Neither are expensive or fancy, but I like them Evolution is around $20 a bottle and Hugues Beaulieu is around $11.
I still haven't tried the Evolution White, but I love the Evolution Red (I liked the old Meditrina blend - which I think evolved (ha!) into the Evolution Red). What I like is that the grapes are from all over (since it's in Oregon but it's got Syrah, I'm guessing a lot of grapes from CA) and there's no vintage which means they're like mad scientists just taking grapes from different vines and years and mixing them together into a real solid red drinking wine. Price is right for this one.

Yay for Mark West. This is the Pinot Noir that broke the logjam on who was making decent pinot and where it was being grown and how you could get a good bottle at a good price. Not my favorite but tasty and worthy just for helping uncork the pinot market in America. And we need to change that whole "don't do noirs" thing...
This girl right here has found that drinking WINE in LINE at shows is the best way for myself to enjoy a happy buzz throughout a full set. WIN because then I dont have to buy overpriced and/or crappy beer at the venues. This is best achieved with the mini-tetra-paks. This little guy right here hung out with me at the Black Crowes show at the Tabernacle back in '09 - I was questioned by the bartender who saw me with it where i got it... I said, "from my purse." ;D Fortunately, he 'caught' me at the end of the second one...
And I had these guys as Line Wine at the Jack WHite show with Holls. BRILLIANT time at that show.
And a couple of these as Line Wine at Radiohead meant I could stay in the front-ish row the entire time. ...nice boys who bring you beer help with that too.

And we need to change that whole "don't do noirs" thing...
I like a full body. Tannins and spice and all that jazz are my baaaggg babbbbyy. I don't dislike noirs... I am just not going to purposely spend my money on them very often.

I call these my "juice boxes" I bring them to picnics, on hikes, to parties... SO CONVENIENT. Personal sized, able to go anywhere, no glass and they look like a coconut water so most people have no idea what you are drinking!

^^^Yeah Bonz - those Bota Boxes rule. Black Box has also started using tetra-paks. I like that you can get decent wine in a baby box - it's not all just crap. ...also, I DIS-like the "this is equal to 3 glasses!" label... makes me feel like a lush when I put down two in the line... or two in the line and a third inside...

I just can't bring myself to drink wine from a box. I have had the bota box, and that in combination with a few other things (Wife being pregnant, moving, etc) drove me to liquor. I think it may be left over from college when I use to go around parties with a bag of franzia strapped to my back and finish it, but not remember how.
Don't hate, but I think I may be the board wine snob. :-(
Mark West is OK though. Pinot is the hardest to get right because it is so delicate. One of the best bottles I ever had was a Napa Pinot, so I can never hate Pinot, but it is not may favorite.

I don't agree with that "3 glasses" line so no worries Cheesecake's wine pour is 6.5 oz, so the tetra is 2.5 in their world. And in, "let's have a glass of wine at home world, that is probably 1.5 glasses!

I've never done Franzia. I draw the line above that! I actually do it more for the freshness than for the cost. I find that sometimes, I'll go for a glass of wine and then for whatever reason, I don't pour another for another week or more. The boxes stay fresh...
