So now we're going to lose to Vandy AND UK each year? Lol. Well Kentucky getting better just makes the conference better, so be it. It just means we need to step up to the plate and make a solid hire this time around.

Oh yeah, I definitely think it is a good hire, but I don't know how much of an impact the guy will have. Like kiko, I am just anxious at the moment about who UT will end up hiring. Once they announce that, I will be able to relax.

Does anyone really want Gruden?? He never developed talent ONCE in his career, 7/8ths of his Raiders teams were AARP members. He's a freakin blow hard.

Yes, a lot of people around here have a huge boner for Gruden. I am in the camp that it is a bad idea for numerous reasons.

His name came up here for the Browns gig two years ago, and it's floating here again. My buddy worked with him, and liked him as a person but wouldn't hire him. I think it's a big mistake for UT, but I'd rather see him in Knoxville than Cleveland, and hope that Tennessee Jerry Jones buys him for his Alma Mater rather than his new toy.

I think the consensus is that development is secondary to the odds that he could be a top notch recruiter. Considering his near celebrity status and owner of an NFL ring, I think a lot of kids would want to come play under him. Many kids want to go wherever will get them ready for the NFL and Gruden knows the NFL. Plus, he's great at the Xs and Os and is a workhorse in the film room. On the downside, he is known to like mature, older guys. I'm really not sure he would want to deal with kids, their parents, etc. Some of it may also have to do with people just wanting some good, spotlight, type of news to come to UT for once. After years of sliding downward, Gruden would give people lots of optimism and hope....at least for the next 9 months...

Perhaps, but you still have to develop them if you want to win, and if they want to get to the next level. His personality reminds me of Bobby Knight, at least in the way he communicates with players, and I'm not sure how well that flies in 2012.

Early reports are that Kentucky has hired Mark Stoops away from FSU. Should I be worried, Sang?
well he knows how to coach defense, that's for sure. but wasn't he head coach at arizona and was a big flop there? and also it is kentucky, so the answer is no.

^^^ If darkhorse means the top 1/2 of the SEC East, then sure. But it will would take a good 5 years for even Belichick to turn UK into an SEC contender.
Update: Meh, maybe I'm just being thrown off by the illusion of "reporting"...."It is the latest in the continuing drumbeat of Gruden claims, none of which have been confirmed by UT or Gruden. And as of this morning, Tennessee has no press conference scheduled to discuss the coaching situation."
2nd update: Now the title has changed to Gruden shooting down this report.

Yeah, it looks to be just another entry in the long list of coaching rumors this season. Did anyone else see the apparently false report of Arkansas making a big offer to lure Miles away from LSU?
Edit: Also, apparently Fisher vehemently denied Stoops had even interviewed for the Kentucky job 24 hours before Stoops took the job, so any denial from Gruden will do nothing to dampen the fire around here.

Thank you! My family and friends are on the Gruden train, but no one can give me a compelling why he is so much better than other candidates. I think people are seduced by his celebrity and the fact that he is the guy that everyone (for some reason) wants but can't have.
Full disclosure, though: I would amped if he signed with us.
I still think Bobby Petrino and Gary Patterson are the guys to pursue. Both would give us instant results and long-term overall improvement IMO.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to be pissed if he gets hired. You don't win a Super Bowl by being an idiot, but some people I have talked to act like it will be Jesus donning an orange polo and taking the sidelines. These same people believe that every single other option is a huge step down from him and will result in UT never having another winning season again.
I have worries about Petrino just because of the heat that comes with him regardless of whether his actions that led to his Arkansas dismissal directly had anything to do with the football team. UT is on probation, and I would just like as little NCAA attention as we can manage.
As far as Patterson goes, I am still not sold on how willing he will be to leave TCU. He has built the program up there, and they are in a top tier conference now, so I am not sure what UT will have to offer him aside from a possible pay increase.

The Vols' best option is Gruden. He's a coach that would excel with college players. College players feed off of high-energy coaches more than their professional counterparts do. They're, for all intents and purposes, still very much kids. If you get Gruden, you get recruiting advantages. Is a kid going to want to play for Bob Stoops little brother? Or John f*cking Gruden!?
Gruden is also a fantastic offensive coach, he'll have UT turn out its best QB prospect since Peyton within 5 years.
I wouldn't touch Bobby Petrino with a 10 foot pole. Once a cheating, lying, scummy, creep? Always a cheating, lying, scummy creep.

All of this hype really worries me in that, if we don't get Gruden, no one is going to be good enough for the fanbase. I just feel like fans are unnecessarily setting themselves up for disappointment with what could still be a slam dunk hire (read: definitely not Al Golden).

Totally agreed. People are going to riot if Gruden doesn't get it regardless of the reason why, and I wonder if that will effect the decision making on some of the other people in the running since nobody wants to be hated the second you walk into town.

Just think, if OSU hadn't been on probation, they would be playing for the national championship!! With that schedule and those margin of victories. Would have been so gross.
