I know Rutgers program has been heading in the right direction, but I feel they'd be no better than 5th in the Big 10 this year. Probably 6th, maybe 7th.
In other news, Maryland and Rutgers have joined the Big Ten, making them an even worst conference...I wonder why they would want those 2 teams. I'm sure the kids will love the trip from New Jersey all the way out to Minnesota...
Rutgers is 9-1 this year (yes, they did lose to Kent State). They've been a program on the rise for years and seem to be getting even better, landing a lot of four and even five star recruits. Why wouldn't the Big 10 want them?
Maryland is terrible and is going to get beat up even worse. They can battle Indiana for the conference's cellar dweller.
True they've been getting better, but in the Big East no less. The Big Ten, as mediocre as it is, still probably has 2 or 3 teams that could go undefeated in the BE year in and year out. I guess I'm just not sure if they really think they're upgrading or just wanting to expand. It seems if they wanted a more consistent program and ones that add basketball, they might have gone after Louisville, Cinci, or Pitt from the BE.
Kent State is our only loss this year. And I was there. Complete let down at homecoming.
Either way, Rutgers is more of a consistent program than y'all are giving them credit for. They have qualified for a bowl game 7 out of the last 8 years now. (Last year our starting QB and RB were both freshmen...). And won 5 that have been played - the 7th TBD.
They have produced NFL talent the past few years including Ray Rice, Anthony Davis, Eric Foster, Shaun O'Hara, Kenny Britt, Rookie Mohammed Sanu, (broke all of L. Fitzgerald's and Britt's BE records for WRs - a special talent), Devin McCourty and Jason McCourty, Gary Brackett, Brian Leonard.
...And Greg Schiano...
Finally, Rutgers just built a brand new stadium a couple years ago. And the State of New Jersey has only been throwing more and more money at the university the past decade.
Right now Rutgers gets on ESPNU, ESPN2, SNY (Mets' home network) and maybe MSG or something. They're rarely televised on a major network.
This deal is as much about the school getting more nationally-televised games as it is for the conference to get into the NY/NJ market.
That's clearly the arrangement for both schools, and both will benefit financially and with respect to visibility. But you can't tell me with a straight face that Rutgers' proximity to NYC (or Maryland's to DC) wasn't THE primary factor.

The NYC populace generally doesn't care about Rutgers....at all.
They're huge in NJ, but I'm willing to bet if you took a pool in the city of the top teams people root for, Rutgers wouldn't even be in the top 5.
I'm not from NYC, but I do understand that college football, particularly Rutgers, isn't a very big deal. However, the Big 10 will now muscle the regional cable providers there into carrying the station on the standard package (I have it standard here in Nashville). This will increase the profit returns for the conference (and subsequently Rutgers) tremendously.
If I sound a little biznatchy, it's because I don't really like A) conference expansion in general, and B) TV markets being the driving force.

I don't think you sound biznatchy, at least not towards me.
And I get what you're saying, in theory that's how it would work out. But the networks around here that are likely to carry a "Big 10" package is SNY/YES/MSG stuff like that. They air Big East and ACC games every Sunday, basically any game that isn't worth noting. That's the type of deal the Big 10 can expect with the local networks. It'll increase revenue, certainly, but it's not to the degree I think most people are expecting.

You're probably right. I think Maryland will be more of a cash cow for the network in the DC area.
lol@the amount of butthurt if nd loses to usc setting up another sec/sec title game
I have a feeling either 1) Florida loses to Florida St or 2) Pollsters won't put Florida in over Oregon. Imo Oregon would have a better reason to go in, assuming they win out.
And if Georgia somehow beats Alabama, I'll just puke if they represent the SEC in the championship game. They haven't really played like a championship team this year. They've only had 2 ranked games all season and got crushed in one of them and beat a questionable Florida team in the other.
Questionable Florida team? Oh, you mean the 7-0 team that had just beaten LSU and crushed SC. You're quacking delusional. Sorry UT sucks, buddy.
Which 10-1 team would be more deserving if UGA won the SEC championship? Oregon - 3 wins over 7-4 Pac 12 teams and just lost in their first real test. Kstate - crushed by a Baylor team that was 1-5 in Big 12 play.
And beat UT and Kentucky by a total of 12 points. Together, they combine for 0 SEC wins this year.
And ND beat Purdue and Pittsburgh by a total of 6 points. What's your point?
They also beat (4) ranked teams, (2) of which were in the top 10 and (1) was in the top 5. Georgia has one such win (for all categories), so not sure how you stack up the schedules like that.

Yes, very questionable. You realize they were a last minute punt block from possibly losing to Louisiana-Lafayette?? They smashed Bowling Green by 13 whole points. Missouri by 7. Their best win was definitely against LSU, since I consider South Carolina pretty suspect as well. Then entire SEC east is suspect, as they haven't played anyone out of conference and basically missed playing Alabama and 2 out of 3 on playing LSU. We will see where they stand a bit better after this weekend. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for their defense, but like ND, they are far from a complete team. They're a good team, maybe even really good, I just don't think they belong in the NC game.
