We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
We have been talking a lot about it around the office recently as many people are totally dissatisfied with Dooley (he's not great but tell me a bad team they lost to this season). Gruden is a name that had came up often on sports radio around here along with Petrino. All the official press has been emphasizing how bad the financial situation is on Rocky Top right now and how it would only get worse if we took Dooley's buyout ($5 million). Like lawngnome, I ain't believing anything until I see an official press release.

To boot, while Gruden could be grand slam hire, he also hasn't coached college football in over 20 years and won a SB at Tampa largely with Tony Dungy's leftovers. I'm still not sure I understand why (financial considerations aside) he is such a popular name to bring up.

I asked this question about Kiffin when he was hired. WHY? His record was not that good, although I think Gruden is a 1000X better coach then Kiffin, but still. UT does not need a "big name" coach.
Dylan, I will see you on Saturday. Well, I will not actually see you, but your Dawgs will be in the teeth of us Gators all day! Go Gators!!!

It's a product of the desperation of Vol Nation to return to prominence now. People feel that a big name = big recruits + big donations. UT's last SEC championship was the same year we won the National Championship. Fans still have that hardline belief that we are the best program in the SEC and have no patience for us to build up the program over years. Unfortunately, when you get a guy that is from the pros, you don't know how long that guy will stick around. Kiffin bailed after one season when his dream job came open. Gruden may bail if he gets a job offer from the pros. If he does leave, we are left at the same place we started.
On Kiffin, he got the hype because he had been a pro coach and many wrote his firing off to Al Davis being batshit crazy rather than him not being a good coach. In addition, Kiffin is excellent at recruiting (albeit not always in the most legal fashion) as evidenced by the talent pool that USC had when he ran their recruiting during the early to late 00's.
Well, that undefeated run was nice while it lasted. Washington apparently plays tough at home, but too many mistakes apparently on the Beavers end. So I read, as the game was not on TV here.

To be honest, I thought Kiffin was a great hire, so was Bruce Pearl. We got really unlucky with Kiffin though and the timing. I think he could've built a great program here. I never liked the Dooley hire, it seemed a bit rushed/out of nowhere. I guess they felt out of options, but even then it never should have had a buyout, that is ridiculous, the guy was extremely lucky to get the offer to begin with.
Imo, we do need a great recruiter to get things going again. Even when you recruit a top 25 class, you still may have only the 8th best in the SEC. I heard the other day that from 1988-2004, we ended every single season in the top 25. Since then, I believe we've only been ranked for a grand total of 1 week (this season before Florida). As a reasonable UT fan, I don't expect us to be #1 every year or anything, but I expect us to be a top 25 program at least. I expect us to be in the sec championship game every 3-5 years at least. I expect a bowl game every year. I expect us to beat a ranked team or two every season. Given our history, I think these are all very reasonable and Dooley doesn't seem to be the path to even reasonable expectations.

Who does everyone like for playing the championship game versus Alabama? Imo, ND is a poor matchup. Oregon matches up pretty well, but Kansas State looks like the best matchup at the moment. Also, the "Big 12" only has 10 teams this season and no divisions, so I doubt they have a championship game this year, though I could be wrong.

I guess you run low on morals? Lane Kiffin is a slimy snake. Even people at USC will tell you that. Just last week guy was just caught cheating in a game. Then there are reports that he was messing around with cheerleaders. The guy has no morals, no class and is BAD for the sport of Football. Built a great program at UT? Maybe, but doubtful and if he did what kind of program would it be? DIRTY! As a reasonable UF fan I would never want that for my team.

^^^ That is using a lot of hindsight. I'm not certain he had such problems before we hired him, at least that I am aware of. I never said I'd still want him to be our coach, just that the hire was good at the time.
If you're a UT fan or have followed the program, you know how much flack the prior AD got for his hires that ended on sour terms (Kiffin, Pearl), when in fact they were both excellent hires and fans were just being results-oriented and using hindsight to go all pitchfork and lanterns on him.
^I knew Lane was crap before the hire, as for Pearl, I guess he was a good hire, I know he gave us a run for our money a many of times. I hear you at 'the time of his hiring', but I would never want LK as my head coach, even if he does bring his daddy to coach the defense.
