I'd like to hear your reaction. I'm unhealthily obsessed with the original trilogy. Obsessed to the point where I have a brick from the original Morristown, TN, set (check my commas, A$AP Rosko). I really wanted to like the remake, especially after hearing about the emphasis on practical effects, but it left me kind of cold.
Well... it was better than most horror remakes I've seen. First, the good... I thought, from a technical standpoint, it was pretty impressive. Really great lighting, decent camera work for the genre, and some nice practical effects... it's really quite the good looking movie. Some of the more suspenseful scenes I thought were well done, but most of them were just kind of... lame. Questionable writing all around in this movie, with some of the dialogue being really cringeworthy. I understand it's more of a re visioning than it is a remake, but some of the themes that they threw in here were, once again, pretty lame. The brother/sister thing with the unnecessary back story, the blonde girl that served little to no purpose in the movie, why is the stuff with the dog important? Too many "false finishes"... I could probably go on, but I digress. I think that the fact that this wasn't a cut and dry remake sort of helped this movie as a whole, but I was very disappointed with the absence of even an attempt at comedy (what made the original trilogy worth a damn). I mean, really, did the humor just go over my head, or was it just not there? The only thing that I even remotely took as comedic was the amount of abuse that long haired guy gets in the movie. But, it wasn't terrible... I'll never watch it again, but it was about what I expected, actually. If I had to give it a rating, probably ** out of 5.
Edit: and I mean to say that this movie reminded me less of Evil Dead... and more of the first half of Cabin In The Woods (without the humor of either). I mean, the cliches and stereotypes were obvious before Cabin In The Woods, but I've always thought that the movie probably should have been the death of that formula horror movie, busting it wide open the way it did.
