You can "drop N-bombs" when discussing the historical context of the word or in a discussion of race. If a history professor does a lesson on the word and it's power and all that and actually says the word I wouldn't think of him as racist.
That said, I try not to use the word "Gay" to describe things I find "lame" or whatever. I definitely used to do it more often when I was younger, like "Oh man...that movie looks so gay". But a few years ago I made a conscious effort to try and not do that anymore and just use the word "lame". Even if I don't intend the word to be taken a certain way that doesn't mean everyone knows what I mean.
For a while, I used to use the word "gay" to describe things that were awesome, just to watch people get really confused. Like "dude, that Ghostface show was ultra gay!" People would be all "ummm, the hell you talking about brody, that sh*t was tight as f*ck" and I'd be all "yeah broner, that's what I'm saying that sh*t was super gay."
I was only asking because I hear the N-bomb used in a lot of hip-hop, and I wouldn't assume any of the rappers (most of whom are african american) are racist.
I always felt the context of word usage is more important. Plenty of non-blacks who grew up in areas heavily populated by blacks use the n-bomb without hesitation. That doesn't make them racist in my opinion.
And its gotta be different than someone saying it at a Klan rally, amiright?

Not really.
There's kind of a general rule that if a slur is directed at you, you are allowed to take that slur and repurpose it and use it yourself to help deflate it's hurtful impact. Hence, black people can use the n-word, gay people are allowed to use the f-word, women can call each other b*tch, etc. That doesn't excuse it - I know plenty of black people who hate that black people and rappers toss around the n-word without hesitation. But still, for the people who have had the word used against them, it's their right to make it their own and reduce the impact it used to have.
And no, it's never okay for a white guy to use the n-word. Never. When I was in high school, I had a lot of close friends who were black. They occasionally, in jest, would refer to me with the n-word. I never once thought that it would be okay for me to return the favor.
That said, it might not make someone racist - for racism I think you need some intent, some belief that another race isn't as good - but it's still offensive.
So I am kinda right. Because I said using the N-word doesn't automatically make you a racist. And that the context matters (i.e. the intent that you speak of).

I mean, that's my opinion, though I do think that anyone using the n-word in almost any context is displaying a remarkable lack of sensitivity. Even when I've had it discussed in classes and academic settings, the word itself usually isn't used. And it has less to do with its use in a racist connotation than with the simple fact that it's a loaded word which can easily cause a lot of harm and discomfort to people.
Literature is different. Unless you're talking about Mr. Twain sauntering around a plantation slinging racial epithets. Then no, that's not okay.
Well that's what I wanted clarification on. If you say "Never" then to me that means never....whether it be in spoken word or written down.
Okay, to use another one....Louis CK. I have heard him say the word and don't think he's racist. I think it's the context that matters and I'm against censoring a word completely. So when I see someone say "This should never be said by a white person" I like to clarify what they meant as I do feel it's appropriate in certain circumstances.
None of those circumstances involve just casually throwing the word out while talking with friends or anything. But serious discussions can include it IMO and not be a problem or offensive. But that's all just my opinion.

I love how I can seriously be posting about the racism/bigotry in one thread, then pop out into another thread and discuss whether a hamburger is a sandwich or not. I love inforoo.
I'm in the "don't say the n-word" camp, but what are your thoughts on this clearly comedic context? Warning: NSFW
The joke was about how absurd slurs can come into existence, with an undertone of mocking the people that create them/use them. And of course the delivery has shock value.
And as a result, I'm sure there were thousands of people lining up on Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook to boycott his TV show.
That said, sir, despite the fact that your views are completely backwards, I respect your beliefs and believe that true tolerance means even showing tolerance to those who themselves are intolerant, so keep on with your ignorance. I salute you, and will buffer my tolerance with continued mocking of your stone-age ideas.

I was implying the usage of racial slurs in everyday conversation, not specific, nuanced situations such as a Southern American writer satirizing the social conditions of his time.
I'm assuming you're a white male like a large percentage of this board, and yes by using it in conversation, deep racial undertones are hence implied. I don't care if you think you're the most open person in the world, by using that hateful word in conversation, you are inciting racist undertones. (similar to saying f*ggot or calling things gay to insinuate they are bad/disagreeable, as was my original point.)
This is terrific - I finally have an iron-clad reason to hate kikosanchez. I've always found him to be blatantly unfunny and tone-deaf when it comes to view on music and, well, pretty much everything, but now that he's espoused such criminally moronic views on homosexuality, I can just be confident in my original assumption that he's a complete clown.

? Seems you missed the admission of playing devil's advocate about 30 posts back.
It is unnatural and immoral. That is not religious, just the truth.
Hi, you live in f*cking America. Land of the free. Founded by people fleeing religious persecution in England? Ring any bells? You are using religion to persecute another group of people, which is LITERALLY the exact thing that led to this country being founded.
I'm also not going to bother listening to someone who just compared being gay to failing a driver's test tell me about morality.
No one has shown how it is wrong, have they? Can you prove that being gay shortens your life span, or causes harm to others? Can you prove being gay corrupts children or that a gay person can't be as kind and loving as a straight person?
Durka.F*ckin'.Dur.
Dude, what planet are you on? You gave that EXACT line of reasoning by saying everythign you've said in the past hour. My point (that you clearly missed) was that things CAN'T GET WORSE. Marriage is a joke, as are people who try to uphold this facade of marriage being some pure union of holiness.
How is it an inalienable human right? Sure a church or whomever can marry you and your partner, it doesn't mean a society/state has to accept this. It is not an alienable right, such as life, liberty, et cetera.
Is your right to marry some swamp donkey frat mattress skank your inalienable right? Yes, it is. As much as the thought of you reproducing induces relentless projectile vomiting, that is indeed your right.
And just like "society doesn't have to accept gay marriage," society doesn't have to accept a world without gay marriage.
And please, finish that quote that you idiotically included in your final selling point. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That's right, folks. Kiko over here used the word "liberty" to say why gay people should NOT be allowed to marry.
Keeks, by any chance do you know what the word "liberty" means in this context? The ability for people to have "agency." Agency meaning "control over ones actions." So, the quote you used (and couldn't even finish, for some reason) literally says it is an inalienable right for people to have control over their own actions. You telling them they can't marry one another is withholding their liberty, you narrow-minded hate-mongering neanderthal.
You make some great points, Flanzo. Not just in this thread -- but on most all subjects you post to. I agree with you way more often than I disagree.
But a lot of these points end up getting completely lost in name-calling, and super-pissy "throwdowns".
I respect the way you think, usually. But you're sure as shize not the first person who's ever had an original thought. Take the (slightly) higher road every now and again. You might find it suits you.
So um, does anyone else not like pickles on chicken sandwiches? Yeah, I'm in the no pickles crowd.
And the manager of the one Chick-fil-a in New Hampshire decided to be a sponsor in the gay pride rally in nearby Manchester next weekend. I wonder how well that one's gonna broil over down at corporate.

Pickles, for me. Spicy okra pickles preferably. It's probably "a southern thing".
And I respect this manager's conviction. I hope no ill rolls down on him from the muckety-mucks.
