Sure, that explains why Lollapalooza sells faster than Bonnaroo, but not why it sold so much quicker this year. Previous years have taken weeks to sell out.
Saturday selling out lighting quick doesn't surprise me. Mumford is insanely popular, they have more adds at Bonnaroo then Paul McCartney, and they aren't doing an extensive tour. Plus, with people like Eric Church on Saturday, it appeals to a broad audience. And it's Saturday, and it's in the center of an enormous city.
Friday and Sunday selling out today surprises me though.

When I lived in Chicago, as Lolla became more popular, more people who lived in the city started to go simply because it was something to do. I also think that the last minute demand for tickets has made it worth it for scalpers to pick up a ton of tickets and sell them right before the fest. When I decided to not go to 2011 because of work, and put my ticket up on CL, I literally had over 100 emails about it in less than a couple of hours. It's an easy fest for a lot of people to make it to and the word has gotten out that it's just a fun way to spend a weekend in the city even if you don't really like any of the bands.
Yeah, I’m definitely less disappointed that I can’t go now. Saturday looks even more garbage than it did before, and Sunday evening is pretty brutal with conflicts. Not that either are that surprising after seeing the lineup for each day.
