Non-music confession: seeing "could care less" used way more often than the correct phrase drives be bonkers.
I have one as well but I thought about posting it the CAF thread:
I once broke off a relationship of 3 months becase She said she liked Bob Marley.
I'm a heartless bastard, I know.
I'm sure that was just the straw that broke the camel's back. If she was 99.9% awesome (the .1% obviously being liking Bob Marley), you wouldn't have. Right?

I think some of the Beatles, Jimi thing is they, unlike say the Stones or the Who, who you may have seen, you probably have not seen the other two. For vibe, the Beatles were hard to beat NPI, Jimi, NYE at the Fillmore, if you weren't there, it is hard to put into words that convey the time and place. Somewhat of a digression because I have to say not everything the Beatles did was gold, but they are still the best overall band so far in R&R imo ... cr****
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
To recap, according to this the previous sh*t pile of a thread page, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley all suck/played out/whatever.
The Beatles occupy that weird zone of both being the best AND completely overrated. I remember vividly a facebook friend bitching when Pitchfork only gave the re-issue of Help a 9.2. I mean christ, really? They were unarguably an amazing band, but maybe it's possible that every thing they touched isn't the greatest ever. Sgt. Peppers, which everyone trips over themselves to call the "greatest of all time," is maybe their 4th best record. I don't know how anyone under the age of 40 can listen to "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" without rolling their eyes. ("A Day in the Life" is still a beast, however). Yeah they were the first and influential and all that, but by that standard people should be bumping Edison test records while they're on the treadmill.
Jimi Hendrix is on the same plane as the Beatles, although I'm far less certain he should be considered "the best."
Bob Marley is hot garbage.
I realize the Beatles aren't an unquestioned "best ever," and I don't really claim they are. They're my favorite music band or artist ever, but I realize depending on your preferences there are a slew of bands that could be your "best ever." What I don't get is when people say they hate them, or "don't get them," or don't think they're that good. You can argue for eternity over who the best band or artist to ever live was, but I don't think you can really argue that the Beatles aren't good. FWIW, A Day in the Life might be my favorite song ever, it's my parent's wedding song and has special meaning, I guess.
Jimi is very much like the Beatles, where you can argue about whether he's the best ever, or argue against it, and both sides will have merit. But he's also someone you can't just write off completely or try to minimize his influence.
Bob Marley is...what? That cuts me to the core, horn. How can you say such things? The Wailers are a great band (and still kickin'), and his social messages & influence aside, Bob made some beautiful music.

This is my stance. Even if I don't like something, I have to give credit where credit is do. There are a few bands on the lineup this year I have listened to and said those guys are good, I just don't really like them as of right now. But to "hate" the Beatles, that's just outrageous.
...whoa, whoa, whoa. Do you not know who Scottie Pippen is? Top 50 player ever, HOFer, 6-time champion, just not Jordan. That's what Bubs is. No one on that show has success without Bubs being a part of it.
And the speech he gives that Dave's snapshot is from is probably the best monologue in the show.
of course i know who scottie pippen is, i wasn't born under a rock.
i'm on the end of season 3 and bubbles is still annoying, so he has two seasons and some change to sway me.
I have told you before, woman. Until you finish the whole series, shut the f*ck up 'cos grown folks is talkin'
Okay, so if I'm going to be smacking ALLL of you in the face, there's going to have to be some organization involved. Everybody pull a number, and get in line. This is going to take awhile.
Dave... the Beatles!? They're so good dammit!
For the billionth time, I think the Beatles are okay. They're not terrible, but they're not far and away the best band ever like some people want to say. This is not directed toward anyone in particular here, but I have a great deal more loathing for Beatles superfans because they, on the other hand, are far and away the most stubborn and ridiculous fans in music. I have never ran into fans of any artist that consistently put the blame for me not liking an artist on me like I have some kind of deficiency in my music listening ability or am just too lazy to put forth sufficient effort to "get" them.
All super-fans are, by definition (fanatic), ridiculous. I hate it that super fans of acts like the Beatles, Dylan, Cash, and others actually create a divide by their insistence that everyone think as they do. I totally get not liking any of the three artists above, or Marley, or Hendrix. I don't agree with it one iota on any of those, but that's cool. What I don't like is when people flat out deny the influence of an artist over time - the intentional slamming of Madonna that I've seen from little monsters in order to promote Lady Gaga as completely original is totally hollow to me, for example. I know you're not doing that Dave et al., just confessing.

Which is better?
Well definitely the first one - Weird Al makes the same point in the video that I was making.
I think the problem with discussing the "greats" is people want to rank everything. I really enjoy the lists, but the problem is there's a small group of maybe 20-25 artists who have a legitimate claim to greatest artist(s) ever. So now in this day and age of let's rank the top 50 guitar solos of British artists born in 1954, people are going to disagree with number one. Whilst you may appease the plurality with your top pick, that's the best you'll do. When it comes to the greats, everyone has a few they really love and it can be frustrating to see them ranked below others, creating this competition between bands that have no business being compared.
How in god's name are you going to give me a legitimate comparison between Bob Marley and Pink Floyd and tell me one was more important than the other or should be higher on list x? Apples and oranges, but they both made music so they're just fruit at the end of the day. This combined with the fact people don't know how to differentiate between favourite and best. Goat - World Music was my favourite album of last year, but I know damn well it wasn't better than channel orange or Lonerism.
Well, as a non-fan, I didn't like either one, but I'll give my opinion anyway . I got all the way through "I Perform this Way," but I had to turn off "Like a Surgeon" because it was just too hard to watch. So I'd say "I Perform this Way" is the better of the two.
Maybe you say the R Stone is crap, IDK, but I tend to think the critic would know more than us
How about Time Magazine ?
damn link won't post grrr my fault
The links are endless. Point being: You don't have to love or even like Jimi, but if you like guitar even a bit, you can't dispute a genius imo ...
One thing to think about is today a lot of people can play (or close) to what Jimi did but he did it making love to his guitar Today it is a guitar, 25 pedals, and an ipad. There's nothing wrong with that but just not quite as cool I don't think ... cr****

Ah, but there's the rub. Dave Maynar's point also - when so many people tell you who a genius is and treat you as if your opinion is insignificant if you don't see it that way, actually leads to a counter-genius movement
Charles Dickens is probably a genius - many even today say he's their favorite author. My whole life I've had him shoved down my throat and I missed an entire week at the beach because I had to read friggin' David Copperfield. When I would try to explain to lit professors my issues with Dickens they'd dismiss me and point out how I wasn't smart enough yet to have issues with the "greats." Hence to this day I HATE Charles Dickens and would "dispute his genius" with you.
I would most definitely not dispute Hendrix with you, however. That's , and he has brain damage.

I agree. I'm a huge Beatles fan but I'm not one of the one's who think they were perfect. They are my favorite across the board but being a fan doesn't mean being a mindless sheep (although some Beatles fans make me shake my head. Who cares that Paul didn't write that line, get over it!) That's what happens when you become popular though. I'm glad to say that they backed it up and that they never got back together to ruin their legacy. They ended on top and not many bands can say that.
Also Sgt. Pepper has some of their weaker songs on it. As a whole and what that album did, it's amazing, but the actual songs kinda suck outside of the album. Never been a huge fan of it. It's grown on me as time has gone on but come on... Rubber Soul/Abbey Road are my two loves. Rubber Soul is a fantastic record all the way through and Abbey Road is what made me love them. Sometimes I wish Maxwell Silver wasn't where it was placed on the tracklisting but moving on.....
Marley I never got into. When I would tell people that they just couldn't believe it. I'm not a big rap fan either and I always found it awkward when some friends would go out of their way to play rap/hip hop when I was around. People used to tease me when I was a kid because I listened to 'white people music' I mean, I just couldn't get into it. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate true (or however you want to define that) hip hop artists. I do and I think it is an art but it's just not something I can dig. Mainstream rap sucks now though....it's pretty good when I'm drunk though....
Another confession...and I hate to admit this but....here goes....I'm a Britney Spears fan. I said it. I'm not proud of it. She's manufactured, robotic, and against a lot of what i believe in and I love it. Been a fan since day 20. I enjoy her voice (more so her tone, it's unique), I think she is/was/almost is again gorgeous, she's smarter than she let's on (I mean she's been around since 99 and still getting number 1 records. That's incredible imo), and she's one of the best robots in the industry. I wouldn't go see her live but I run to her music all the time. I wanted to marry her at one point, before she went crazy, I mean...I'd still take her to dinner but......she's too unstable. Regardless, that's my confession. I have more but I'll just leave it there.

I'm so ashamed.
I echo this in almost every way. One of my deepest darkest secrets...
This isn't much of a confession since it wasn't my choice, but at 6 years old my mother took me to my first concert, George Strait. I still remember all the adults yelling "Whiskey!" during opening act Highway 101's hit "Whiskey, If You Were A Woman". I do think to this day that song is a perfect example of a classic country song. Now that I've thought about it I may youtube it.
I'm way more into Radiohead now than I was when I saw them last year at Roo..I was blown away by their set, but I will admit the whole time I was waiting for them to play Creep not knowing that they hate that song.
