I have no clue where this band would be slotted if they were booked. They lost a ton of popularity on their last album, even though it was good. I guess it depends on how well their third is received. This could be a possible Which closer depending on how their third album goes.
I saw them in the This Tent in '08, kinda early evening timeslot, and had a BLAST. Then they got "huge" and were in the That Tent late nightish in '09 - total snoozefest. Im with kingofcos - no idea how they'd be presented if they were at Roo next year. Depending on conflicts, I would likely go give them a shot again.

I thought the 09 set started slow but finished great. It was a better show that when I saw them afternoon slot at Lolla 08. With an album due around Christmas, I'd say they make the rounds and land a stage in 2013.
I agree. Even though Congratulations (which I really loved) wasn't held in the highest regards, they are still a well recognized name who would draw a huge crowd. They could easily close the Which at this point, without question.

id love to see them late night but i know alot of people really wouldnt care because its a hit or miss kinda show for them. im down for them closing out the which one night though too
Actually the last time I saw them they sounded a lot better than when I saw them in '09. I don't really get how you can insist that their show won't ever get better. It's not like their bad musicians or their singer can't sing live, it's just that they all seem really nervous and out of the moment when they play. Last time, they seemed to have a lot more confidence, and it seemed like they were having a blast.
I think their second record is actually a LOT better than Oracular Spectacular. I think the first half of that album is not much more than poppy, crappy, synth-pop (although the more psychedelic tinged second half of it is not bad) but Congratulations is a really really awesome album, I think. It wasn't as popular, but I think it's much better.

I just always felt like Ben and Andrew lacked chemistry with their live band. They've been together a few years though, practice and repetition will hopefully pay off on the next tour.

plus with the release of their newest album, i think they could really pull off a good show at roo 2013. they just really need to get a fuller sound live. in the studio they sound great though

Yeah, they might be better next time around, but the thing is if there is a serious conflict for you during their time slot, are you willing to take a chance on them and miss the other act you want to see? I ask that to everyone who was at their 2009 late night. I'm not.

oooooh thats a good question. it kinda depends on who their up against, since i dont know where mgmt would be slotted. my biggest conflict this year was the shins/young the giant/the civil wars and i picked the shins. if it was something like that, id have a tough time choosing haha

Well, it's safe to say that they are too big for a tent at this point. Hell, they were too big for a tent in 2009. So, unless their third record brings a bunch of new hits like the first, a late night slot is out because they wouldn't be a late night Which caliber act. That leaves a late afternoon/evening Which/What slot. I don't think they could pre-headline (I don't care if Rodrigo y Gabrielle just did), so by process of elimination that puts them on the Which. The difference between them being the Which closer and the act before the closer depends on how their next album is received. I would not be surprised at all if they were the Sunday Which closer, which, zodi, would certainly increase the chance of a big time conflict.

bunch of hipsters here, even though congrats is a much better/consistent album. i think their live show suffers because they get quaked up before hand. at lolla 09' i dont think they were positive they were facing the crowd (not that the show was all that bad)
Yeah, honestly, I feel that strongly about their disappointing live show that I hope they don't waste a pre-headliner or Which close on this band. If they do get booked, you'll find me front row at a different show. *shrugs*

or you'll hear that they perform alot better than they have since the release of their new album and be really dissapointed that you missed them. kinda depends on who is playing against them for me

I would have to agree, their last show at roo was nothing to get excited about... However I saw them a handful of other times including roo and love it, so I have a hard time letting that last show dictate. Schedule placement would decide whether I saw them again
I loved both albums, with Oracular Spectacular translating better in a live music/party setting and Congratulations being the better driving in the car/chilling with some headphones album. If I had to pick one or the other I would pick Congratulations. I unfortunately missed their first show in.. 2008? I was able to catch the ending of their 2009 show because I was at NiN, and I thought the last few songs were decent enough. I was able to catch their entire show from a decent spot in 2010 at Voodoo Fest and I loved the show. I thought they were great live and left thinking it was one of my favorite shows of the weekend. It was topped off by getting a high five from Andrew when he and Ben ran through the middle of the crowd. I welcome their return and am exactly about the new album.
