Important thing to remember about Glastonbury too is location location location. Glastonbury is a kind of Mumford and Sons homefield advantage.
And as far as GA vs. VIP, the interesting part of the conversation is how that factors into the headliners. Specifically how an act (let's just say Prince because we all know we want it) and an act like but not definitely Mumford and Sons would play off one another. The conversation gets dry when you just start comparing how much money you spend using each.

I don't think I'm alone when I say this - I don't want any old fahkin relics to headline at Roo. If you can still bring it like McCartney, Springsteen, and Prince, I will welcome you with open arms. But if you're a bunch of weak old skeletons like the Stones and the Who, I'm not into it.
I love those classic bands, in fact I CELEBRATE their entire catalogue (trying to sound as pretentious as possible) but honestly, if you're headlining at my favorite festival, you better be prepared to sweat it out. I want effort, effort that those old birds can't give me any more.
The Cave (from the Bonnaroo X video) is one of their most energetic songs. And sure, like at Glastonbury, I think they could be a pre-HL or hold down any other spot at Bonnaroo. But the Friday and Saturday HL spots? I don't see it. I was at their Which show. It's very chill music followed up with a few higher-intensity songs. Is that what a Friday or Saturday HL is? If so, then it's a real deviation from the typical energy of those spots. Not to mention, newer bands don't play those spots either.
Trust me, after Unchained I believe anything is possible. I just don't think they fit or belong there. (I'm calling it now, they pre-HL one of those nights.)
Oh, yeah, I totally cherry-picked The Cave for maximum crowd action. I was displaying that they can lift a crowd up and play with energy.
Sigh No More is a much more mellow album than Babel, too. They now have twice as much material and a lot of it is more energetic (and in my opinion, generally better) than they had when they played in 2011.
Don't get me wrong, I hope that the line up is strong enough to relegate them to What pre-headliner status. I'm just not sure that that's where the tea leaves are leading us. If they do headline a Friday night slot, I think they will impress.
Sorry, that wasn't about you picking convenient songs. It was more about their style. I still just don't see them fitting. If they are big enough to headline, there are a lot of bands out there that have been skipped over as not big enough. There is no doubt they have appeal, especially when Arcade Fire was deemed worthy. But I think it still comes down to their style just not hitting enough headed into late night.
We are all scratching our heads about HLs right now, and unfortunately we will have to wait for Insider to shed some light.

Also it seems like Mumford is a more popular choice for headliner on here than, say, the Black Keys? Not sure why. They were at Roo the same two years in a row and are each in the midst of large-scale arena tours. I actually think the Black Keys would be significantly less polarizing for Roo's target audience...

It's almost like if you can just see them out on tour, then sure why not see them. But I understand, for Roo those kinds of guys are really great when it's got the feel of a one-night only rarity.
I get them being new being a barrier. They would probably be the most "green" top three or four act in the festival's history.
I just see their ascension from a tent to a ridiculously crowded set at Which to their huge new album to them selling out multi-night stands in arenas on their upcoming US tour as evidence that they could be this year's Friday night headliner.
Maybe not. Maybe they won't get booked. Maybe they will end up preheadlining. Heck, maybe we'll get another Beasties v David Byrne type situation. (Please, not that debate again!)

The general vibe I get is that their set was a bit underwhelming, that it paled in comparison to their previous Roo sets.
It was my first time seeing them for a full set and I had fun but I was up in the pit and that's kind of a deceptive vibe. Most sets are fun there!
But to your suggestion, I don't know that there would be a problem with them as a headliner from the Bonnaroo base. I'm just not sure that there would be a lot of enthusiasm, though.

Oh it was totally underwhelming. I've seen them three times since they blew up and each time I regret it. But those smaller club shows were spectacular. In fact they had a late night at Roo 2010 that really kicked ass. They just can't bring the same atmosphere to these giant crowds.

Dare I say: If this is the case with the Black Keys, then it would a hundred fold be the case with Mumford. That stage... That crowd... I don't see it translating well.

The black keys would actually be great as the Friday HL, I know it's not a popular choice around here but they draw massive crowds and have headlined most of the big festivals at this point. Although I was Black Sabbath instead of them at this years Lolla, I heard they actually (finally) put on a show that reflected their size and billing. Coming into this season I was 90% sure they were going to be at bonnaroo this year but in an interview they said they're going to play a couple shows in spring and then go back on tour again in fall, so it looks unlikely.
Anyone who thinks Mumford and Sons can't headline Bonnaroo is in denial.
There is a reason everyone puts them in at 4 and not the top 3. As I said, they could probably hold down Sunday. I just don't think their brand fits with what is required for the Friday and Saturday spots.

The way I see it, Mumford & Sons no doubt can headline. I just don't think they will if they're booked. Given Bonnaroo's HL track record, it doesn't seem likely to me they would put a band with just two albums of material as a HL. I was very surprised that AF and their three albums got a HL spot in 2011.
Point being, if Mumford & Sons are there, I think they'll be a What pre-HL. However, they absolutely have the draw, the music and (probably) enough material to headline if called upon.

I think you're generalizing the Friday and Saturday spots too much. While it's true that the bands in these spots don't compare to Mumford & Sons, Bonnaroo and its headlining format have no rules. If Capps and Co. feel a band can headline, they're going to headline and for a current and huge band like Mumford, they're likely not going to headline Sunday.

I can see why you'd think I'm generalizing because I am. My opinion is it would be a weird show for that stage, at that time, with the history we have of music that has been played in those same spots. Just looking back, Mumford would be a better pre-HL.
The only reason I mention Sunday is because their vibe would be much better matched there historically than Friday or Saturday.

I don't necessarily disagree. I do think they could work as headliners, even though it won't be perfect. I watched their performance at Coachella and while it wasn't a headlining spot, it was at night and a headlining-feel atmosphere and the crowd was digging it. Honestly, it was a pretty high energy show I felt.
All that being said, I would much rather them be a pre-HL (or not be there at all) than as a headliner and do agree that they probably would work better in a pre-HL and shorter time slot.

Follow that up with a hip-hop undercard headlined by Wu-Tang (hopefully) or Drake and a country legend (Hank Jr. would get my vote) and the usual strong 'roo undercard.
