I was being (moderately) facetious. I do recall some use of the word indie, as well as being called one of the 'alternative kids' when I was in hs. I guess that's what flannel plaid, TMBG shirts and mary jane shoes meant back then.
There was both but they were different. Indie kids were the hipsters of the 90's. They were the ones that bought 7"s and had the obscure band t shirts. Alternative kids were the next step up. They were the people that listened to college radio and supported those bands.

Barenaked Ladies, yes. They Might Be Giants, yup. Mazinga Phaser Fishbone Frontier Light Bright Highway Drivn n' Cryin Spiritualized Thorazine Dreams Nine Inch Nails Deftones Mr. Bungle Tripping Daisy The Toadies LID There was also this band that nobody else liked back then except for this one song. They'd listen to "Creep" then go back to their Hootie and Ace of Base tapes. Y'know, the same people that made fun of my Birkenstocks one summer, then spent $120 on a pair of Birkenstocks the next.
