I know that a media band is far inferior to a photo band. Other than that I do not know. I would assume that if they are mailing you a wristband you do not need a ticket.
Your wristband is you ticket. It is a general admission ticket other than it gets you access to the media area, where there are daily press conferences, interview areas, an air conditioned trailer with wifi to work and catered meals (costs extra but worth it). The area is backstage, between What and Which, and provides good access to get from stage to stage. Other than that, camping and viewing is generally GA. However, some security people at the tents will allow you into the side stage / photo area of those shows -- especially late night.
Yeah. Photo is media + photo pit access. Must have pro camera, only given to larger outlets.
OK. This begs the question and definition of "pro camera." From other readings and folks talking, I'm taking it that if it has it has removable lens, it is pro. Leica has a model or two "point and shoots" any pro would love to stick in their back pocket. I don't think one has to be armed with a 500mm rocket launcher. Being a packmule for equipment at an event such as "Roo is tiring and no fun, to me.
In other words, for me, a point and shoot can be a pro camera.
Artists do protect their image hence 'Roos stance on cameras with removable lens. Yes, removable lens sometimes does imply pro.
"One time when we shot the Pope..." that would be another thread...
All I need now is an "assistant" with the right parts. <smile>
I had a press pass in 2009. The main advantage was clean port-o-potties inside the press area.
Other than that, there wasn't much advantage. Camping was the same. Getting the wristband took forever and ended up with a terrible camping spot which equated to about a 30 min walk to the venue, one way.
I was just confirmed for press coverage yesterday as well. So far I'm a bit overwhelmed, but I may have some questions later. This thread has already been helpful.
I'm kind of worried now, because I haven't heard anything about my radio credentials. This will be my fifth year covering 'Roo--I can't imagine they'll leave me hanging. (Then again, looking back in my email it was May 13 when I got my notice last year.)
The air-conditioned tent is vital to people like me who are old and out of shape and don't do heat well. I wish there were a better option for camping, but I usually don't spend much time at the campsite anyway.

Hell if I'd known there was AC involved I'd come up with some reason to apply for press credentials
The press tent is THE coldest tent on the farm. They also supply water for media, which is a BIG deal, especially if you are a photog running from stage to stage carrying gear all day. Keep in mind that there is NOBODY assigned to make sure that the cooler has water bottles in it. So, make sure if you see the cooler running low on water bottles, you go outside of the tent, grab a case of water and put them in the cooler. If everyone does this, everyone will have cold water all day.
As for pro vs non-pro. Basically, if you have a DSLR with removable lens, you can shoot in the pit with photo pass. If you have something else, I suggest you contact Big Hassle before you leave and tell them what you have and ask if it's OK. For example, I've seen photographers with Lubitels in the pit. I would get it cleared with Big Hassle now.
You have to meet up at the media area like 15 min before a show and a person will lead you to the What and Which stages. The tents, you walk up to the left side of the stage (stage right?) and show the security person your photo bracelet. Walking around with my photogs to the tent shoots taught me a lot about how to cut through a crowd and get up to a stage quickly without fighting your way through. I use those ninja skills at a lotta shows now -- even when not working. :-)
