Dubstep-free lineup, I like. I wonder if the crowd will be skewing a little older this year.
There was dubstep the previous two years? ???
Last year had Kode9, who, aside from being a great artist, created Hyperdub, arguably the most important label of the genre
After letting the lineup digest, I think I'll be sitting this year's fest out. There's just nothing with a huge draw for me (as opposed to Massive Attack and Jonsi in '10 and Moby, Brian Eno and Amon Tobin : ISAM in '11) and I've seen many of the acts I'd want to see (though I would have no problem seeing Four Tet and The Magnetic Fields again). That said, it will still be a fun festival with plenty to enjoy.

so i know there was talk somewhere (here or infomoog) about people going to sts9 wedenday at the ryman. im going and was seeing if anyone else was forsure.
It's in the Random Thoughts thread on InfoMoog. I am down as long as I can to and from there (I will be visiting and sans car.. so hint hint people). Cheeky said that she was planning on going as well.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Not trying to make this an STS9 debate thread, but they are starting to get their groove back a little. Check out this set they just played at High Sierra, sans-laptops.

So....is this not the full lineup??
Key word: possible.
This is a softening from their earlier stance which very much indicated that this line-up was it.
They're really not doing too great on the PR this year, huh?
They do seem to be making some missteps specifically in announcing things when they are not 100% on them. This change of stance may also be a reaction to the amount of negativity they have gotten reaction-wise. I was talking to Abra last night, and I think the additions (and if there will be any at all) will depend on how ticket sales go and what their long term plans for the festival are. For example, if ticket sales are slow and they want to keep it going, they will go a little bigger on adds to get people interested again. If they are slow and they are not attached to continuing the festival, they may not add much or anything and just not hold it anymore. The feeling both of us have is that it seems Moogfest got put on a back burner this year with the addition of Forecastle.

I'm not really up to date on Moog buisness. Maybe they just couldn't book everyone they wanted this year and will come back strong next year like OSL did a few years back.

They have said they tried and failed on a few acts (the xx, New Order, Underworld).

I'm sure there has defiantly been a shift in who is over Moog this year vs last year, at least on the social media side. This year they seem to be answering more questions without knowing the answers and putting less effort into building a new client base for Moogfest.
One of the things that made Moogfest so great, for me, was how they brought in new people and made them excited. It looks like whoever is running it this year is trying with the videos they put out early but didn't they realize that would make the lineup drop seem underwhelming? Ben did a great job last year in hyping up Moog. Perhaps they didn't see the ticket sales they hoped for and are going in another direction. What they failed to look at is the first time Moogfest attendance in 2011. People who had never been to 2010 showed up for 2011. How many people from 2011 will show up for 2012? Not many if you don't include those of us who are going back for other reasons (friends or the area).
Like Dave and I discussed, I see this being their last year unless they put in some great additions. I wonder if AC even wants to throw money in that direction or just let it die. Don't they realize that 2010 and 2011 were great? There's no need to go around changing everything this year. They simply need to nurture it and let it grow. Any business will have years in the red while they build their base, it's rare that you start off big and grow from there.

Ben Riddell? I worked with him to do a Moog ticket giveaway through Schoolkids (record store I work at) last year. He's great. Awesome dude. That'd be a major bummer if they really pulled him off the Moogfest assignment this year.

I agree with this. They probably felt obligated to throw us a few bones since the lineup dropped a full 2 months later than it did last year, but I think they gave too many of the big guns away in advance. Before the lineup came out, we already knew:
Primus 3D Orbital Richie Hawtin Squarepusher Pantha du Prince Thomas Dolby Prefuse 73 w/ Teebs
That's 7/30 names, including 4/6 of the top billed acts. And with all due respect to Santigold and Miike Snow, neither act brings much "wow" to the lineup. Imagine how differently this lineup would have been received if none of those above names had been leaked in advance. In some cases that wasn't Moog's doing, specifically Primus, Dolby, and Prefuse. Squarepusher was so obvious that it made sense to go ahead and leak him, too. But if they hadn't leaked Obrital and Hawtin themselves, how many of us would have seen that coming? Why not leak Cold Cave or Carl Craig, something like that?

Airline brought that same idea up the other night in chat. A lot of the oomph from the line-up was out before the line-up dropped. Most rightfully assumed that they wouldn't leak a headliner (Orbital), so there had to be something bigger up their sleeve. When that was not the case, i think a lot of people got let down.
Also, Abra brought up a great point last night about what the line-up is missing and that is fun. The line-up is quality, but it (especially the electronic portion) has a lot of serious music on it. There are artists that are fun, but it's not like it was last year.

Yes, Ben Riddell. He did the turntable room, was spaceman in all the vids and was a mad man working the social media during Moogfest. Even though I only got to talk to him via email, a short time in the record store and a small bit at TNAF show he was on it. Someone said that he got a promotion and this year just doesn't seem the same on the PR as it did last year.
Agreed, Abra. I've only met him via e-mail as well, but he seems like a truly good dude (not to mention great at his job). So if he isn't on Moogfest this year, that would definitely help explain the change on the PR front.
Put me in the maybe column. Like ncbst, I think the ticket is affordable enough, but the travel/hotel expenses require more consideration.
Somewhere else she said her family is offering her a trip to Hawaii around the same time, and there are only so many vacation days to go around.
I removed that post because it kind of muddled the issue. It's a free trip vs not a free trip that happen to be going on around the same time. I really want to go to moog, Hawaii is only happening if I can't afford moog.
I'm going over my finances soon and I hope to make it work without feeling like I'm being super careless about paying off my debts.
