How strict is security on SLR cameras? I'm bringing in my Canon T3i with the kit lens, which I assume will be fine. But if I try to bring in my telephoto lens (about 6-7 inches long), will that get confiscated?
I've heard it's hit and miss with the DSLR's depending on how well your bag gets searched. Their policy is NO cameras with detachable lenses - period. Including the kit lens. If the lens comes off, its not allowed unless you have a press pass.
We have the older version of yours - the canon xti but we didn't attempt to take it into Centeroo because I didn't want to have to walk it back to camp if we got caught with it at the gate. Which is a good thing too because we were camped in BFE.
We did have the camera at camp though and just used our iPhones for pics. But this year we bought a $200 Canon point and shoot that we'll be able to take in with us. It takes nice pictures too and is actually higher megapixels than the xti.
If my SLR gets denied at the gates (not centeroo), will I not even be permitted to bring it into camp? I'd hate to have to get back in line on the highway if I had to go run to a post office somewhere to ship my camera home or stash it somewhere.
I'm thinking I might be better off just sticking with my phone and my point and should sony cybershot.
You can have dslr's in the camping area. It's only when you go through the entrance to Centeroo where you have to scan your wristband and get searched that they can turn away.
But something to consider, it's going to be hot this year. I wouldn't want to leave my dslr in my locked car. And I sure wouldn't want to leave it unsecured. So it does present a dilemma. They do make some kickass point and shoot cameras now. I bet you could almost do as well with one of those.
This thread is making me nervous about bringing corn again this year lol. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing the DEA with the dog's last year, luckily we went right through the line with a volunteer who barely looked.
I remember reading some posts saying that certain sets they don't let you record videos and such. How will I know what sets I can't bring my camera to? I just picked up my new gopro today and I don't want to worry about having to go back and put it back at camp

Up until the year before last Tennessee had a Democratic governor. For some reason they elected a staunch right-wing religious conservative Republican whose first year was last year. It might be me, but I noticed an increase in LE last year outside the event.
