Headliners? Yes definitely. Undercard? That's up for discussion. Now if you love hip-hop then yeah it is, because this is a pretty good hip-hop line-up sans Mac Miller. But so far I like last year's undercard a bit better. We got a plethora of folk, bluegrass, and country plus we got My Morning Jacket, Buffalo Springfield, Primus, Opeth, etc.
I just hope with the additions we get some metal and bluegrass/folk.

You've got a bird in the hand/two in the bush/apples/oranges thing going on. One is an actual historical event. The other is an event planned to take place in the future. A giant meteor could wipe out the eastern half of the US on June 5th. I bet you'd feel pretty bad then.

I think it's not even close. I had a great time last year but on paper (and only the initial lineup drop) this year crushes last year. So far the 2012 edition looks to rival 09.
I was pretty underwhelmed by last year's lineup and it turned out to be one of the best I had attended (my 7th since 2003). I agree that it looks better on the surface, but you can never tell until you feel the vibe. Fortunately, the vibe at Roo is almost always great so it's a win-win!
I do, however, feel like it's missing something. No matter, I'll be there and fully expect to have the time of my life again.

What was the bluegrass on last year's lineup? I'm blanking.
Old Crow, Del McCoury, Allison Krauss (sort of, country/bluegrass), Bela Fleck and The Flecktones (again sort of bluegrass), Railroad Earth.
We got 22 bluegrass/folk/country acts on the main line-up last year, not including what was in the cafes. This year we about 8-9. The lack of bluegrass/folk/country and metal is why I'm sort of meh on the line-up.
Now I'm still going and gonna have a blast, but the one aspect of the fest from last year is bigger than this year by a lot.
I'm guaranteeing that the lineup for 2012 is going to be better than the "10th anniversary."
Yup. Better headliners, better undercard.
To expand:
- Radiohead is better than either the Arcade Fire or Eminem. - Red Hot Chili Peppers are better than Eminem. - Phish is better than Widespread Panic. - Buffalo Springfield/Beach Boys are a wash. - The electronica in 2012 crushes the electonica in 2011. - The best hip-hop lineup Bonnaroo has ever put forward. - A ton of great/young/current indie/rock/folk type acts
Commence arguments.
I think the 2012 lineup is approaching, if not equal to, the 2009 lineup in terms of depth of quality. Agree with every point here except one (see below) AND I might even argue that as much as I love both MMJ and The Strokes, Bon Iver and The Shins might be better or bigger or at least more noteworthy for the general public.
Here's the part I (predictably) disagree with:
Buffalo Springfield/Beach Boys are a wash.
Juggs, Juggs, Juggs. The Beach Boys reunion is about 10x more awesome than the BS reunion. And this is coming from someone who was SUPER pumped about the BS reunion. But The Beach Boys are absolute icons. Yeah, they're old now, but think of a band like The Kinks. If they reunited, that'd be a huuuuuuuuge deal and I think The Beach Boys is at about that level, if not bigger.
Maybe BS and Beach Boys are about the same from a Wolfman Jessian aspect of ticket sales, venues played, etc., but in terms of pure music nerd excitement, The Beach Boys reunion is a much bigger deal than the BS reunion. In my opinion, anyway.
To get back to the larger point though, yeah, the 2012 lineup is miles better than the 2011 one. And it's probably one of the best lineups Bonnaroo has put together. I think that if we didn't know a lot of the names that'd be on there going in, more people on here would agree with that statement.
i agree 100% that this year's lineup is already better than last year. i think the most telling thing is how there are so few complaints on this board.
my only complaint is the lack of metal. we've been spoiled the last few years. hopefully some metal bands will be added, but either way, this is my favorite lineup since 2007.

Regarding the metal, what if Iron Maiden was the act insider was referring to and they're still working on adding them as the fourth name on the bill to play a What LN on Saturday? Just throwing it out there.

Strongly disagree, personally. Headliners are better this year but everything beneath the top 3 was better last year for my personal tastes.
And no way on the Beach Boys > Buffalo Springfield, karosko. You're letting your Beach Boy fanboy-ism speak there. Neil Young & Stephen Stills, or Brian Wilson - who forgot the words to his own songs and looked like he was being propped up ala Weekend at Bernies - & Mike "Hold a microphone and don't move or make any facial expressions while performing" Love? I think I'll take Neil, Stills and the gang.

I will have to say that Buffalo>Beach Boys, and that last year's top 6 was probably better than this year's top 6. Still, 2012>2011 due to the top 3 and the, what I consider to be sick undercard

I agree with everything that's been said, except I think last year's 2nd tier > this year's. IMO My Morning Jacket, String Cheese Incident, Robert Plant, the Strokes, and Mumford & Sons are way better and more unique than this year's #'s 6-11ish. Then again, that could be because Foster the People and Skrillex kind of ruin this year's second tier, IMO. I've seen them both and had fun at their shows, but they're no where near last year's second tier.
Besides for that, this year is pretty incredible. I'm just hoping for some more jamtronica/live electronic. Last year highlights were Tribe and Ratatat, the year before were Biscuits and Lotus, this year we've got nothing. Big Gigantic is as close as we've got.
2012 shows: 3/23 - The Men 4/9 - Of Monsters & Men 4/21 - Bassnectar 5/2 - Shpongle 5/22 - Jack White 6/1 - tUnE-yArDs 6/7-6/10 - Bonnaroo 2012 6/18 - Destroyer 6/20 - The Tallest Man On Earth 6/23-6/24 - Governor's Ball

I agree, there is a serious lack of Bluegrass/Americana this year. Also to me the most lacking feature is Rock and Roll, even counting the obligatory Jam Bands I am only seeing 8-9 acts that qualify as just good rock.
That being said I really do think we are going to get a nice bunch of additions. Like ODB said on facebook it kind of appears the initial lineup was to suck in the people who got shut out of Coachella.

Were you at the BS show? Richie Furay and Neil sounded terrific, but Stills couldn't sing those high parts that he sang on the best BS songs. Stills sounded like sh*t.
Plus, I'm sick of people focusing on how the Beach Boys LOOKED during that Grammy performance. They SOUNDED terrific in my opinion. And does anyone realize that Brian Wilson has really intense agoraphobia and that that might've contributed to his nerves at the Grammys? I mean, even someone who doesn't have agoraphobia might get nervous in an atmosphere as obnoxious as the one the Grammys presents. It's not really kosher to make fun of him for that.
Will he be just as nervous in a surrounding like Bonnaroo? Maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm excited to see a reunion by one of my favorite bands of all time.

Not that the Beach Boys reunion isn't a big deal, but I don't have faith that their performance will even come close to living up to the hype created. I'm not going to throw in the towel on them based on a one song performance at the Grammy's, but it didn't sound very good. Hopefully they will get into a rhythm by Roo time, but I'm kind of doubting it.
it's mainly just personal preference... there were a lot of acts that year that i simply liked a lot... NIN, Mars Volta, David Byrne, Crystal Castles, Grace Potter, Grizzly Bear, Cage the elephant, etc.... and on top of that, there seem to be quite a few repeat acts this year that were also there in 2009.

Even if they can't sing or play like they once did, I imagine it'll mostly be a celebration of those songs, those transcendent songs from their prime. Which I'm actually OK with. 30,000 people singing along with "God Only Knows" and "California Girls?" Sign me the f*** up.

It's not at 09 level yet, really not even close. However, all the pieces are in place for it to be comparable, hell maybe even better. Bring in a solid comedy group and fill out the upper mid card with an act or two around Mac Miller/Childish Gambino area (the only kinda weak part of the lineup) and we'll have a debate on our hands.
