The Shins are an indie group originally formed in Albuquerque, NM but moved on before long to Portland, OR. They released the single "New Slang" and eventually their full-length debut Oh, Inverted World after signing to Sub Pop in 2001. The record instantly reveals the quality of melody creation Mercer possesses, easily weaving through each progression with his unique voice. I think it has more of a timeless feel than the Shins records that followed, possibly due to it's concentration on sparse arrangements and heavy reverb.
They followed that up with Chutes too Narrow, which is sort of the cult-y Shins record. The people that love this one REALLY love it, and it makes sense as every song here is rock solid and more fleshed out on a songwriting level. The mostly acoustic album has more contributions from the other Shins and really cements that lineups laidback, yet brainy style.
Chutes was recorded in a very short amount of time, something Mercer didn't seem to enjoy. Wincing the Night Away is nearly the opposite in terms of the approach. With some prog rock influence, detailed arrangements, and a glossy production style it seems to show the path he wants the band to take in the future. It was on the Wincing tour when I saw them live for the first time. They were fantastic, with a much more muscular sound live than I would have anticipated. Each member really worked well together.
Having seen them, the fact that Mercer decided he could do better as far as his bandmates go is pretty high praise for the new guys. Yes, the band that Natalie Portman said would change your life has now changed every band member. It will be hard to know for sure if this will be a positive for the group until Bonnaroo, but reviews and videos from the recent comeback shows suggest a more skilled and versatile array of musicians to pair with Mercer (these include Joe Plummer and Richard Swift).
Port of Morrow, which will be The Shins fourth album will be released March 20. The single "Simple Song" is out now.

The Antlers began as the solo project of vocalist/guitarist Peter Silberman, whom released his first musical effort, Uprooted, in 2006.
From the fall of 2006 to the spring of 2007, Silberman wrote The Antlers’ second album, In the Attic of the Universe, which was subsequently released by Fall Records that November. While touring these two albums, Silberman would recruit drummer/percussionist Michael Lemer and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci. This rounded out The Antlers current official lineup.
It would be The Antlers' next release, Hospice, which would launch them into the public eye. Hospice is a concept album telling the story of a Hospice employee and his abusive yet beautiful relationship with a terminally ill patient. Silberman has alluded that the plot of Hospice is analogous to an abusive relationship that he had recently escaped briefly before the recording of the album. Silberman has also stated that one of his largest inspirations for writing the album was that of Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and the chilling story that Jeff Mangum presents within.
In reference to which character is speaking in each song, Silberman explicated in an interview, “I realized while I was writing it that it might not be clear who was being addressed. Pretty much, at all points throughout the story, it’s the narrator speaking, with the exception of “Thirteen” where Sylvia is speaking,” Sylvia being the terminally-ill patient in the story (whom is voiced by Sharon Van Etten).
The band initially attempted to self-release the album in March of 2009, which resulted in an immediate sell-out of all the copies they had made. They signed to Frenchkiss Records and re-mastered/re-released the album later that same year.
While writing their second album, Burst Apart, in 2010, they also performed at the Primavera Sound, Osheaga, and Lollapalooza Music Festivals. Burst Apart was released on May 10th, 2011 and The Antlers toured extensively worldwide, playing the Laneway, Sasquatch, Reading/Leeds, ACL Music Festivals and Moogfest.
They are truly a not to be missed set at Bonnaroo!

I think I'm going to attempt The Beach Boys. It'll probably be a week before I can get to it though, so I can make sure to devote appropriate attention.
