Frank Ocean is definitely hear to stay. I feel like Tyler is burning a little too hot too fast though ...
or am i joking?
you are confusing me now. frank ocean will be around for a while. tyler will probably end up with 2 more strong albums, disappear for a while, and come back stronger. remember how young they are, they still have so much time to hone their craft. i feel like a lot of people on this board just want to hate on odd future. it never comes down to a discussion about talent or anything, it's always about the hype. let's focus on the music.
Sorry, it's never just about the music. Hype/marketing is a huge part of almost any artist's success. I really like Tyler, but I thought they were far too aggressive last summer with his releases. Backlash against overexposure has always happened and always will happen. If you want to focus just on the music, I wish you good indie-cred.
oh no i wasn't saying that it's just about the music. i was saying that's what WE should focus on when discussing them. sorry i worded that post kinda weird
I don't see why they have to do something "new" for the genre. They make music, people like it, and that's all that matters.
Fair enough. It just seems incredibly lazy. How could you be in a band and be content to contribute absolutely nothing to music. They sound like a mixture of Jet and every three chord riffed car commercial.
Sorry if I offended anyone. I suppose if you enjoy it, that's all that matters.
Well that's part of the reason Odd Future would be billed WAY above Black Box Revelation. The genre has been around much longer. Also if you think that OFWGTKA is 100% new beats and styles then you're wrong. Look into acts like Aesop Rock, Madvillain, Jedi Mind Tricks, and Atmosphere. Not to discredit OFWGKTA here at all, but it's not like using a strange noice over a bass drum on 1 and 3 and a snare on 2 and 4 is not ground breaking.

Never said I thought OF was completely new. Didn't even imply that they're groundbreaking.
but black keys and black box revelation sound exactly the same? got it.
Aesop Rock and Tyler the Creator sound totally different.
BBR and Black Keys sound extraordinarily similar.
How can you not see this?
Also, I NEVER said BBR and Black Keys sounded exactly the same. I said "hardly a difference".
THIS is what happens when Bonnaroo doesn't give the boards something to talk about! Get the shit together, Bonnaroo, because we need some real talk over here!!!!!

All I know is that great songs are often the simplest ones. Musicians are shaped by their influences, it's pretty hard to bring a new flavor to blues rock these days. You can't discredit anyone who tries.

Looking for some new flavor to blues rock? Check out my man Gary Clark Jr. and I think you'll rethink that statement

Plenty of artists bringing some flavour back to the blues. I dont think we should type cast what we call "blues music" to garage rock bands such as the keys and BBR.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
