The Roots should just be part of this superjam. I dont even mean just one or two members. Every member of The Roots and THEN start adding guests instrumentalists and singers/rappers. They should be the complete centerpiece of the whole thing. The possibilities with this lineup would be endless. Bon Iver, Flea, Gary Clark Jr, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Ludacris, Trey, Robert Randolph, The War on D.R.U.G.S. (Questlove played drums for them on Fallon recently), all of the other hip-hop acts, etc. This thing should be like 4 hours long.
Here ^^^ they are backing Justin Vernon. I mean The Roots can do literally anything. The surprises I've seen at the 8 shows of theirs I have been to are too many to name.
Here ^^^ The Roots are backing Black Star on Fallon (audio only)
If only Trombone Shorty comes back this year ^^^ oh my god.
Backing Gary Clark Jr ^^^
They should just be artists in residence like Herbie Hancock was in 2005. They can sit in with almost anyone on the line-up.

Oh and for those who dont know. Guitarist Captain Kirk of The Roots is not of this world. Seriously, people call him the reincarnation of Hendrix. He is one bad MF'er and absolutely has to be part of the Superjam.
Check out his beastly skills in these three ridiculous videos. I'll go out on a limb and say he is the most gifted guitarist that will be on the farm this year.
If anyone attending who is not familiar with The Roots doesn't want to see them after these videos then they are a lost cause.

I've seen these before, but they sure as hell never get old.

One of my favorite parts of ROO is Superjam, and this year should be epic. Robert Randolph, Luther weenieinson, Questlove, Trey, and Mike Gordon are all SuperJam alumni(am I missing anyone?), and there are plenty of others that are going to want to get in on the jam. Flea & Medeski are the most likely to make their first SuperJam appearance

Yeah, they announced it last year but I think a big part of that was the New Orleans theme of 2011 and not necessarily because that's going to be the norm.
I wonder if they'll announce ahead of time or just try to surprise people like it used to be.
last year they announced it during initial announcement. the last time there was a super jam before that was 08, and i believe it was on the lineup with no initial release about who was in it(although it was leaked in an interview). so if i had to guess, i dont think we are gonna get an announcement from roo. 2008 was my first year so im not sure how it happened before that, so was last year the first time it was announced ahead of time?

Although the suspense may kill some of us, I have a feeling it may be a surprise this year. They announced the main Superjam players with the original lineup announcement last year and this year it just states "superjam". Not sure if this means anything, but if you click on the sample song on Roo's website for "superjam" a sampling of Trey/Mike/Marco/Joe from 2006. With that said, I'll be shocked if Trey isn't involved

I'm pretty sure that last year was the first time that they ever formally announced the Superjam lineup in advance.

2007 it was known that it would be John Paul Jones, Questlove, and Ben Harper. Bonnaroo made a big announcement ahead of time.
2008 was leaked by Hutz but not by Bonnaroo.
2009 didn't happen but was supposed to be a surprise.
Questlove bringing out Kirk to the Superjam in 2007 was one of the highlights of the entire weekend. Questlove, JPJ and Ben Harper was good, but Kirk brought it to another level. Still the best Superjam I've witnessed on the farm.
I prefer when they announce before hand. I'm sure many of you are like me and take your Roo'ing seriously. I spend a lot of time planning what I will try to see and would rather known who is involved in advance. I love the anything-can-happen atmosphere of the fest, but last year I was a sad puppy when I found out I missed secret shows from both Deer Tick and Portugal. the Man.
I really feel Quest and Flea being involved. I think the frontman and guitarist possibilities are endless this year.
