....ok here is my lineup review, and i would love for this to start a conversation about my comments. To preface.......I am a 47 year old 5 time Roo er w a masters in Violin performance that saw 187 Dead shoes in 36 cities. I only mention all of this for you to see where I spent my last 20 years.
After reading EVERY post in the headliner prediction area I must agree that even tho I am enormously into Phish (see Dead pedigree above), this festival lineup starts and ends with Radiohead. I could not believe that after all of the rumors and prognostications that we actually got them.
After the whole Macca and Prince masterbation that I read and got excited about I was left with Radiohead and this other list of bands which left me as with every year that I have attended to ask which of these other bands will thrill me. (I discovered Dr. Dog, National, Jack, Lip Etc in past years. I just spent the last 8 hours listening to Shins, BI and Flogging Molly and was left likewarm about them. Please provide me with comments so that I can listen to some of this undercard and gain some excitement about ALL OF THESE BANDS that I know nothing about.
Thanks.
Punch Brothers are down right amazing if you're into Bluegrass/folk. Their main guy is Chris Thile - which if I recall correctly was what they were touring under before they adopted the name Punch brothers.
Listen to the album How to Grow a Woman From the Ground, others would suggest Anti-Fogmatic, but I can't get enough of the first one.
Trampled by Turtles fits in the same category. Damn good.
joenigro...I think we have different musical tastes because i'm not a huge jam band fan (more alt rock, hip-hop and electronic) but here are my must-sees of the undercard:
Major Lazer Flying Lotus Umphrey's McGee Dawes SBTRKT Kendrick Lamar Joy Formidable Mimosa Alabama Shakes Gary Clark Jr. Big Gigantic (just saw them last week, incredible) Moon Taxi
It kind of always does. I might take a break from roo after this year, I havent been to any other fests
I wouldnt say it always does... I would agree with my taste this year Coachella wins...for now. Maybe I'll discover some new bands I love.
I have been to lollapalooza, ACL, kanrocksas, and sxsw (which is different) and nothing compares to Bonnaroo. It's a combination of the fact that shows go all night with the fact that you never leave the farm so your submersed in this alternate world for 4 days. The other festivals may have better lineups according to your taste on certain years but nothing beats the entire experience of Bonnaroo. Dusk at Bonnaroo when it finally starts to cool down and you realize you are in for a fantastic not of music.....nothing beats it.

I completely agree with this, having been to Ultra and Hangout. Hangout definitely has something special going for it, but it ain't Roo.
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.

I just got home so I haven't looked around much. Doesn't it seem like the lineup is a lot more indie this year. Maybe it has to do with Radihead headlining.
patoirish you would admit that the "late night acts" aren't very compelling this year though, right?
Ya I would have to agree as of right now. Im going to have to do some more research and will be interested to see who they put in some of those slots. I think Bon Iver could be a good late night at the Which.
Then again...there are no late nights at a lot of other festivals!

I've got extremely similar tastes, so I'll give you a rundown of what I'm excited for.
Umphrey's, The Word, Charles Bradley, Punch Brothers, Moon Taxi, Gary Clark Jr., Dumpstaphunk, ALO, White Denim, and Big Gigantic.
I at first glance thought this lineup lacked a little jam, but you just gotta poke around!
I'm sure this has already been said, however; Coachella's lineup puts Bonnaroo's to shame.
If Coachella released their line-up during peak festival season, I don't think they would have a stellar roster like they usually do. Plus they are near by L.A., so that is a help.

Ack, this pains me! The late-nights are gonna be incredible! Big Gigantic, SBTRKT, Mimosa, Mogwai, FlyLo, Umphreys, Major Lazer! (I know, no one's definitely LN yet, but these are my guesses!)
So I am in LOVE with about 80% of this lineup. That is actually a very bad thing. The conflicts this year are going to be devastating for me! I'm going to be bouncing around a lot like I was in 2010 it looks like.

Well thanks for the help on starting my research! I'll come around on the late nights. If not I'll just ride my Radiohead high through the rest of the weekend and be good to go.
The thing that will always have my heart for Roo is that its like you are on another planet for 4 whole days, very few rules, and thousands of lovely people. Besides the handful of bros that can make some shows kind of loose butthole

Yea I want to know some of Inforoo's favourites on the bottom half of the list. Half the fun of Bonnaroo is exploring the music you haven't heard yet! I've really been digging the Tune-Yards, Black Lips, War on D's, Das Racist, Civil Wars, anyone have any praise for some of the lower listed bands I should check out?
Sarah Jarosz. Amazing musician and a strong songwriter to only be 20 and on her second album.
Wanted to make an observation I saw on the website that is slightly (or completely) off topic but didn't know where to go with it.
I saw, and can't find now, a drawing of wrist bands on the new Bonnaroo.com website. They drew them as the same type of wrist bands used at ACL this year which were cloth like the old ones, with a little RFID chip on part of it. MUCH better then last years annoying plastic piles of poop. I would assume they would be using this new type which gets us closer to the old style.
The small things get me excited about Roo - the arch, the fountain, some of the wall graffiti and the wrist band design.....
I am only a novice Phan but I would recommend Live stuff. There is a ton on Spotify. The ones I have been listing to most lately are LivePhish vol. 14, 8/07/10 Berkeley Theater, 7/04/10 Verizon Wireless at Encore Park. LivePhish vol. 13 is a lot of fun too, it's one of their Halloween Shows where they cover a ton of Beatles songs. Hope this helps!

This will be my first Bonnaroo. I'm pretty satisfied with the lineup, I was just hoping for more artists that I personally find "danceable" (Fatboy Slim, Crystal Castles, of Montreal, Araabmuzik, and Nicolas Jaar) and MMJ. I still think I'll have an amazing time celebrating my birthday on the farm.
