Oh I can dig that for sure. Like I said, I'm a huge Donald Glover fan. I love Community and think he's a real funny guy. Totally respect his grind and the fact that he's so independent making his own beats and what not. I just think he's an embarrassingly bad rapper.
I wasn't putting any stock in their review (Although I actually agree wholeheartedly) I was just using them as a source for a couple more of his SUPER CLEVER hash tag raps
fair enough. i can agree with the argument that his style might not be original. but i think his writing is still pretty good, and as guitarman just said, i give him credit for actually writing his own lyrics unlike a lot of the mainstream guys coming out today.
but we disagree, and that no big deal. there will be many other options available during his set if hes there, so to each his own.
Yeah that Casey Anthony line is exactly what I'm talking about. The hashtag rap shit is so old and played out (Was never really cool to begin with)
He seems like his "style" is just the style of everything that's hot in hip-hop right now just mashed together into one commercially acceptable persona because he knew people would buy it because he's Donald Glover. To me, a "clever lyricist" is someone like MF DOOM or even Earl Sweatshirt who consistently incorporate new, complex rhyme schemes and use actual wordplay. Saying a random sentence and then pausing and saying a word that can sum up what you just said is not clever to me. In fact it is the complete opposite and terribly unoriginal IMO.
Not to mention like gramps said his voice is annoying and whiny as f**k.
To each his own I guess. If he is there I hope you enjoy the set
yes he "hashtag" raps in a song called Bonfire...where the premise of the song is to take common topics (what people are talking about, whats trending now for discussion) and in his words "make them hotter" by using play on words. pretty sure he nailed the purpose of the song.

Yea I was going to ask if most of them are on the same song (like maybe it's a theme or something).

three songs from the same album...maybe I dont fully understand hashtag rap but I dont think its any of the below
If you don't take him seriously, he's a lot of fun. I've seen him before and if there weren't any conflicts, I'd see him again at roo. Hashtag rap is pure fluff, which I don't think is a bad thing.
I enjoy Childish Gambino a lot. I was a big fan of Donald Glover and at first wasn't really feeling it, but after I listened to Culdesac a few times I really started liking him. Listened to Camp at least 20-30 times, he's good.
I only dropped by because I thought people in this thread would be most excited by the fact that I emailed CG's booking agent (tour manager? I don't know/care what the correct effing term is) and asked if he would be at 'Roo and his response was "We'll see "
I don't feel like posting the tiny screen cap again, but I uploaded a picture of the emailz in Roo Clue #8 and the artist direct confirmation page.
I can see why one might consider it #rap, but that's my favorite kind. It's pertinent in my lifetime and makes me laugh. I think his puns, wit and creativity far surpass any other rappers that I can think of in the semi-mainstream right meow. If you can think of any others, please recommend them so I can check them out. He's filthy, but not OFWGKTA filthy, and I love that he actually sings on his songs (I will always be a nerdy girl from the Midwest).
I will be heading to Chicago in March to see him, and I can't wait! He was amazing last year, and I really hope he's back again.
Caught some of his set last year and while it didn't start off strong to me, by the time I left to check out Deerhunter I almost didn't want to leave! And Camp is some hot shit. "Heartbeats" is one of my favorite new tunes! So I'd be down fer him to return!

felt the exact same way. he seemed nervous to start, and the beginning of the set wasnt great. i decided to stick it out and i was glad i did. the set got better as it went on, and i enjoyed it a lot.

Donald has gotten a lot more popular since last years Thursday night performance last year (which was awesome!). Where do you guys and gals think he'll be placed this year. I'm thinking pre-late night Friday.

Gambino has been a favorite of mine for quite some time...and for those who just love Donald Glover check out Mystery Team on netflix.
I've seen him three times now...I wasn't really too much into Camp at first, but now I love quite a few of the songs. Some of them still get on my nerves (he repeats 'Asian girls everywhere UCLA far too many times in one song) and for someone whose album theme is not trying to be like every other 'black' rapper out there he has certainly upped his usage of the n-bomb.
All of that being said, here are some of my favorites from when he was still releasing all of his songs for free via his blog.
I can't believe I missed his set last year. I had no idea who he was, so I skipped out on it. However, after researching the lineup so far this year, he's become one of my must-see artists. I hope he gets a night time set. I've been listening to Camp over and over and over and over again.

I'm really torn because I love both CG and Ludacris so much. I will be really disappointed if either of them have a daytime tent spot. I think it's a pipe dream, but I want each of them to be on a stage. They are both such party-starters that it would be a waste not to give them the nightlife and boogie.
Having his show in the tent last year was pretty terrible. He was great, but the setting was off. Everyone and everything was a bit more condensed as it was Thursday. I was rapping away, minding my own business, self-bleeping the word that white kids shouldn't say, when a frat boy who clearly couldn't handle everything he had or hadn't kept passing out. Literally. He would be standing there then he would just fall over. His friends kept picking him up rather than taking him out to help him. It took three or four times before someone from the health squad came and pulled him out of the crowd. I DIGRESS.
He was seriously amazing last year. Full of energy, all over the stage, jumping off speakers, hilarious between songs, WEARING A GARTH BROOKS SHIRT. It was definitely one of my favorite shows from last year. Needless to say, I would not recommend missing this show if you so much as slightly enjoy him.
I'll be seeing him in March (I've mentioned this, sorry to repeat myself) and I can't wait. I'll let you people know how that one goes.
