I missed him last year, which was a huge disappointment, and nicer the past year I've become twice the fan I was, so I'm really hoping he can make an appearance on the farm again this year. Anyone else want him / know anything about his schedule for the summer?
I like him but he really hasn't gotten much bigger.
Yeah, he has. Look at where he's billed at Sasquatch and Coachella. He didn't move a ton of units (though he did okay), but his profile has gotten a lot bigger. I think he made enough of a leap where he could be the "act that played Thursday the year before and now commands a bigger spot."
i agree. i can see him making a jump from the thursday night to a day time tent this year. his album his released since his appearance, and he appears to be making the festival rounds this year.

I love Donald Glover but his raps are just terrible IMO. I really feel like the only reason people like Childish Gambino is because people like Donald Glover

^ I felt this way until I heard "The Longest Text Message". That track sold me on him. Camp's got some pretty good stuff too! No, he's not the hardest, and he's definitely not the most talented, but his stuff is catchy at the very least!

I agree....and not only that but the time of Roo last year he wasn't necessarily established as a rapper. It was more like "Oh this is Donald Glover from Community who also raps on the side...let's see how this is". A year later and he's much more widely accepted as a musical act AND an actor/comedian.

I like a lot of his wordplay and many of his references. I wasn't sold on him at first but his writing is pretty good.
am I the only one who things this guy does not have "voice" for hip hop. It sounds to me like he's going through puberty or at least he's trying to fit so many words in in such a quick manner that he sounds like he's gasping for breath, but I swear I hear some voice cracking. Some of his lyrics are pretty good I'll give him that. But I saww about 15 minutes of him at Roo last year, and I just thought his performance and stage presence was very poor. He just doesn't have the persona of a rapper. He's great as a comedian and comedic actor. But it's in my humble opinion that he should really stick to that. Him as a rapper just isn't (for lack of a better word) believable.

I totally disagree with Alberto Balsom and totally agree with itrainmonkeys. His lyrics are witty and original. Some of my favorite lines include:
"The poop I'm doing this year? Insanity. Made the beat then murdered it, Casey Anthony."
"If I'm a I'm an idiot!!! spell it right I got way more than 2 Gs"
"My weenie is like an accent mark it's all about the over 'e's"
"E E Cumming on her face, now that's poetry in motion"
"Took the G out yo waffle, all you got left is your ego"
I also don't think he would be a good fit for a day spot. Rap just doesn't go well in the day. I think Snoop would have been better at night but the day show was extremely disappointing in my opinion.

i thought he was shaky for the first few songs last year, but his set got a lot better as it went on. i think he had some serious nerves when the show started. he mentioned several times that he had never been in front a crowd that big.
im sure he has improved his live show now that hes focusing more on being a rapper. id be all for seeing him again if there wasnt any serious conflicts.
edit: guitarman, i agree his show would be more fun at night(i think you can say that about amlost every show at bonnaroo). but his popularity isnt enough to justify a late night set i dont think. they only was i can see it is if they do a complete late night tent dedicated to hop hop like they did in 2008 when they had 4 or 5 acts in a tent.

Yeah that Casey Anthony line is exactly what I'm talking about. The hashtag rap shit is so old and played out (Was never really cool to begin with)
He seems like his "style" is just the style of everything that's hot in hip-hop right now just mashed together into one commercially acceptable persona because he knew people would buy it because he's Donald Glover. To me, a "clever lyricist" is someone like MF DOOM or even Earl Sweatshirt who consistently incorporate new, complex rhyme schemes and use actual wordplay. Saying a random sentence and then pausing and saying a word that can sum up what you just said is not clever to me. In fact it is the complete opposite and terribly unoriginal IMO.
Not to mention like gramps said his voice is annoying and whiny as f**k.
To each his own I guess. If he is there I hope you enjoy the set

Yea but that's just one line. If every song of his was mostly just that then I'd agree but I don't mind it when it barely happens. Does he "hashtag rap" a lot on the album? I haven't paid too close attention to all the lyrics.

Yeah he uses it incessantly. I only listened to Camp one or two times so I'm not 100% sure if it's as rampant on that but on everything before that he relied on it way too much.

No I thnk you were right about the comedy. On Roo.com he's got two shows Saturday in the comedy tent. I thought for sure he had his comedy set switched to a music set but IDK...maybe I'm just fuzzy with the memory. I just remember really wanting to see his comedy set but then thinking that it got changed to Gambino instead.
Unless the Roo site wasn't updated then I think he did do a comedy set.

Can you think of any other examples off the top of your head?
No he did a comedy set or something along the lines. "Donald Glover" was on the lineup way before "Childish Gambino" was
Yea but then it changed to Childish Gambino and he was taken off the comedy schedule if I remember correctly.
Edit: You're right. He apparently did a comedy set on Saturday. I think maybe his original comedy set got changed or something like that.
if i remember correctly the childish gambino set was added after somebody(22-20's maybe?) else canceled. i think since he was already there on the comedy act, bonnaroo just asked him to replace the slot that was opened due to the cancelation.

No because I dont ever listen to him because I cant stand it but with a quick google search Pitchfork's review of "Camp" said the same thing that he uses too many hashtags... they cite the examples of "You can kiss my ass, Human Centipede" (this is just terrible), "I got a girl on my arm, dude show respect/ Something crazy and Asian, Virginia Tech."
Im sure if I would listen to Camp all the way through again and write them all down it would be pretty bad

lol ignore pitchforks write up on him. first of all they sit there and pimp drake all day, so that immediately destroys any credibility that they have. second of all they were just butt hurt that gambino not only rips on them, but also that he rips on their beloved drake several times on the album.

I wasn't putting any stock in their review (Although I actually agree wholeheartedly) I was just using them as a source for a couple more of his SUPER CLEVER hash tag raps
I think Alberto was just using the review as a quick source for finding examples since he didn't remember any offhand, not like he is basing his enitre opinion of Glover on that review.
EDIT: Haha beat me to it.

One thing I'd like to note in the defense of Gambino. Today's music scene is littered with ghost writers, producers, and artists that just read from a sheet of paper that is laid out in front of them. One of the draws to Childish Gambino for me is that he raps, DJs, makes his own beats, and seems to be a generally cool guy (not a douchenozzle like many artists).
