Funny you say this, because I feel like it's the lyrics that keep me from ever truly LOVING Phish. They are a great band with great musicians but their lyrics are total bullhonkey and every time I hear them sing I'm really put off by them.
Which of the lyrics out of their 500 song catalog repulse you so much? They have plenty of songs with great thought provoking lyrics, plenty with silly lyrics, and plenty with none or minimal lyrics. It is also important to remember that the lyrics that are written by Tom Marshall are different than the ones the band writes.
Also a lot of their songs are puns, or contain puns so the lyric might sound silly but it is alluding to something else.
Joy is about Treys sister dying of cancer
Everything on Rift has great lyrics the whole album is a quasi rock opera about a guy breaking up with his girl and getting back together the next day and all the dreams he has that night. Mound, and it's Ice are my favorites
NICU which is a pun song (and I see you) has silly lyrics bu they are awesome all the same
Appendages flailing, you're running at me Ferocious tenaciously, clawing at me The devious gelatin holding me fast Miraculous now, you let me ooze past
Over the wall, rushing rivers of sleaze The tip of stalactites incising my knees A slipper, a sand dollar, day at the shore Nice evening at home that I dread even more
Chorus Would you please make clear to me I'm peering out through your opacity Though you rehearse tomorrow's verse Forgive me if I don't sing in your key
Back on those days when my life was a haze The gelatin lay on a truncated sleigh Copernicus drank from a vessel that stank From the free mason's crank to the overflow tank
Bane of the weasel for biting/biding is fun Jump on the turnstile and watch me go round Swim with the cactus (ssssssss) and float with the stone I try to convey what you strive to condone
Chorus
...Play it Leo!!
Chorus
x2 Would you please (No left turn unstoned) make clear to me (When you see me) Why nothing is the first thing that I see And if you do (No left turn unstoned) And I see you (When you see me) Then you will be the nothing left for me
I was thinking it was the lyrics as well that kept me away, but you make a good point. They are not all silly some are very well written even. Now that I think about it it is Treys voice/delivery that has never grabbed me, on numerous attempts. Not saying he is bad just not for me.
thanks guys i think thats what drags me to them. they have so much talent but they are not afraid to be silly and make a song that makes absolutely no sense. ive had Hampton Comes Alive '98 for days. any other albums worth getting into before the show?

I'll be the one to give the obligatory MSG NYE 95 official release recommendation.
That Hampton comes alive is an AWESOME set. Well done listening to that one.
^Props to ITM up there for the "Dirt" lyrics shout-out. The band has a tendency toward the goofy and absurd, but Trey and Tom can write some damn poetic lyrics when they want to.

I would recommend any combination of: - any 'Live Phish' release (there's 20+) - any festival set (Clifford Ball, Great Went, and Big Cypress are the best. Completely ignore that Coventry ever happened, though) - any NYE run - any Halloween show - any Hampton show
That will give you a pretty solid start (and a few days worth of music to get through!)

this is probably the simplest way to recommend great shows to newcomers. well done, and I concur.
I also still think A Live One is a great primer. but that might just be because it is what introduced me to Phish.
Thank you. So much more phish to get into. I guess I don't feel so bad considering I was 11 years old when all these came out
The only problem is that Phish then =/= Phish now. In my opinion, from about 1995-2000 was their absolute apex. It doesn't mean that they aren't good now (though I'm far less fond), but if you're looking to get into them to prepare yourself for future live experiences, you'd be better off sticking to the post-2009 stuff, which is much more representative. If you just want a better appreciation for the band, then by all means dig into the catalog. A few personal recommendations:
-Oswego Festival 1999 -The Island Tour 1998 -Pretty much anything from Fall 1997, though 11/22/97 and 11/28/97 are my favorites, with 11/29/97 and 12/7/97 up there. -New Year's Run 1997; 12/30/97 in particular is a monster of a show. - Halloween 1996 and 1995. Some people love 1994, but I think it's way overrated.
For my money, Phish was at their absolute best from approximately the late fall of 1995 until the spring of 1998. Seek out that stuff if you want the biggest bang for your buck.

'97 was the best year imo, still what Phish is doing noe is still better than 90% of the other bands out there.
That was my 3rd Phish show and my first festival. It's where I learned that driving to the tip of Maine from Atlanta without stopping, save for gas and food, takes approximately 26 hours.
