Yeah I am always disappointed they get relegated to the "Jam Band" slot when they play any festivals. It really sucks for phans and they are much more popular than a lot of Friday bands that have played before. They could have dropped RHCP put MMJ on Sunday, and Phish Sat/Fri and the whole fest would look a lot better.
Bummer. I thought it was going to be 2 shows, but only 2 sets. They didn't have to announce that and get everyone's hopes up.
I know. I got super excited when I saw this. They did 2 sets last time they were there. This did not qualify as a special announcement. Confusing? Yes. Special? No.
I have a feeling we will get a good chunk of Phish in those two sets. Willing to bet they will be longer sets then at a normal shed show. Phish very much gets bonnaroo, and I think they'll put in the work necessary to make it a special show.
I've getting goosebumpy thinking about how awesome that Hood will be, deep in the second set, on the what stage with that gigantic crowd. memories will be made my friends!

You went in the Phish pit last year? Damn.....that must have been epic.
lol I know what you meant.
I just figured since he said "planning to camp out" that he'd be waiting around a while. Not sure if he's trying to get right on the rail or anything like that. I don't think he'd have to wait long to get into the pit but depends on how close he wants.

I've never felt the need to be extra close to Phish, especially not at a festival. This may have something to do with trying to find my group, who were extra close to the stage, after leaving to go to the bathroom during the Big Cypress millennium show on a head full.

I am more than 100 Phish shows in and the first time I did the pit was 7/4/10 in Alpharetta.

I will probably be shooting for the rail as well. I heard the pit line was bum rushed in 09?

I think I'm gonna watch them play for an hour and then clean up and be ready to leave on Monday. If I have time left, I could see the last song(s) of their set.
I really like them, but after an exhausting weekend, any show longer than 3 hours would kill me. If everything is already clean at camp I might just lay in the grass for the full show.

with a setbreak and encore, it'll be a 2.5 hour show

I am sure it will be the same 3 hour show they always play.
so i just started to really get into Phish in the past few weeks and im already Hooked (see what i did there?) been listening to "gone phishing" every night on Jam On Sirius radio, and just ordered Bittersweet motel. i know they are a jam band but what really gets me are the lyrics. anyone have a good book recommendation to gain more background info.

Funny you say this, because I feel like it's the lyrics that keep me from ever truly LOVING Phish. They are a great band with great musicians but their lyrics are total bullshit and every time I hear them sing I'm really put off by them.

Which of the lyrics out of their 500 song catalog repulse you so much? They have plenty of songs with great thought provoking lyrics, plenty with silly lyrics, and plenty with none or minimal lyrics. It is also important to remember that the lyrics that are written by Tom Marshall are different than the ones the band writes.
Also a lot of their songs are puns, or contain puns so the lyric might sound silly but it is alluding to something else.
Joy is about Treys sister dying of cancer
Everything on Rift has great lyrics the whole album is a quasi rock opera about a guy breaking up with his girl and getting back together the next day and all the dreams he has that night. Mound, and it's Ice are my favorites
NICU which is a pun song (and I see you) has silly lyrics bu they are awesome all the same
Appendages flailing, you're running at me Ferocious tenaciously, clawing at me The devious gelatin holding me fast Miraculous now, you let me ooze past
Over the wall, rushing rivers of sleaze The tip of stalactites incising my knees A slipper, a sand dollar, day at the shore Nice evening at home that I dread even more
Chorus Would you please make clear to me I'm peering out through your opacity Though you rehearse tomorrow's verse Forgive me if I don't sing in your key
Back on those days when my life was a haze The gelatin lay on a truncated sleigh Copernicus drank from a vessel that stank From the free mason's crank to the overflow tank
Bane of the weasel for biting/biding is fun Jump on the turnstile and watch me go round Swim with the cactus (ssssssss) and float with the stone I try to convey what you strive to condone
Chorus
...Play it Leo!!
Chorus
x2 Would you please (No left turn unstoned) make clear to me (When you see me) Why nothing is the first thing that I see And if you do (No left turn unstoned) And I see you (When you see me) Then you will be the nothing left for me

Lyrics have to be downright awful for me to change my opinion of a band or artist if I enjoy the music and most importanly the melodies. I like Phish quite a bit but their obvious weakness is their singing to me.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

I'm a big lyrics guy myself and can say there are some songs that are really well written and worth listening to while reading the lyrics. I'm not going to deny that a lot of their songs are just fun/goofy lyrics with good instrumentation around it. There's a lot of silly stuff but there are some solid songs that are a bit more serious. I like some of the songs on Farmhouse because it was one of the first albums of theirs I got into and started learning the words to.
