I remember there used to be a thread where Garageland would share all of his great musical knowings with the board. I think Nod started it. Couldn't find it though so here we are. I have been really craving some great new music lately and as I spend more time on this board I realize what great taste some of you have (Zapp, Garage, mcbeatz and Nod I have found all have very similar taste to mine) and how much more music you all know than me. Recommend me some tunes peeps
Some of my favorite artists to give you an idea of what I like are
Flying Lotus Radiohead Aphex Twin My Morning Jacket The Black Angels J Dilla Spiritualized DJ Shadow Boards of Canada Deerhunter Gorillaz Iron & Wine Nick Drake
Last few weeks I have been listening to a lot of Modest Mouse, Pixies, War on Drugs and Beck
Its easy to recommend White Denim. Check out their newest release D on Spotify if you haven't already. they are a melting pot of different influences, as a fan of music its fun to just try and find them all in the songs.
Some of my favorite albums were made before I was born.
Neil Young On The Beach and The Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street come to mind. I've also been rocking: Sparklehorse Good Morning Spider Faces Five Guys walk Into A Bar Box set The Fresh & Only's
I'll get back to this, Agreed on Spacemen 3. If you love J then check out the older Jesus & Mary Chain stuff. Psychocandy for starters.

Also, the best advice I have for this is stay curious. Don't get locked in to albums. There's something special about something you've listened to a million times I guess, the transportive nature of music, but it's very constructive I think to listening to new albums as much as you can.
It doesn't have to be recent, but just something you've never heard before, something a little outside your comfort zone.
Alberto, just so you know I'm watching your last.fm.
You better stop listening to RHCP.
Hahahaha I had to dude. I had a buddy over who really likes them and we were talking about them playing Bonnaroo so I put them on. Plus their pre-Stadium Arcadium stuff is all pretty good in my book (And Stadium Arcadium has it's moments as well)
Edit-- And thanks for all the recommendations guys. I'll be getting around to all this stuff this week
Have you tried using TuneGlue to discover new artists? It's easier than going down the rabbit hole that is iTunes...it's geared more toward discovering than purchasing: audiomap.tuneglue.net/
Here's what I got after entering Radiohead as the first band:
We seem to have similar music tastes. Some other artists (not sure if they've already been mentioned yet or not) that I discovered & fell in love with in the last year are:
exitmusic We Are Augustines Of Monsters and Men Other Lives Washed Out Two Ton Boa ZaZa
But your #1 best bet (based on my experience!) for discovering new music is listening to online radio stations (KEXP Seattle, KCRW in CA, KUT in Austin, etc.) and subscribing to their podcasts. I positively SWEAR by KEXP. They're my holy grail of indie music.

Is that the same as music-map.com? Is it better? <-- EDIT: NVM I checked out tune glue, its so much better definitely recommend it as well! Thanks for the link. Oh BTW if you haven't listened to "Youth Lagoon" I suggest a listen.
I feel like you're going to know every one of these, but I'll try.
Flying Lotus - I would recommend Shlohmo; I have seen him referred to as "FlyLo on sedative."
Radiohead - Liars. They opened for Radiohead a few years ago and sort of have a similar sound. Sort of. I guess it's hard to have a similar sound to a band that changes so drastically as Radiohead.
Aphex Twin - Plastikman (Richie Hawtin). It's not totally similar; Hawtin is more minimal techno, but he's incredible and needs to be mentioned in this thread at some point.
My Morning Jacket - Phosphorescent. More like early MMJ though.
The Black Angels - Sleep. They're more sludge metal, but it's stoner rock at heart.
J Dilla - Definitely Knxwledge. Dude released like twenty EPs last year and they're all really good. Clams Casino is great too.
Spiritualized - Besides of course Spaceman 3, perhaps Brian Jonestown Massacre? Airline turned me onto them. They're very space/psychedelic rock like Spiritualized.
DJ Shadow - Cut Chemist. They did some work together and are both masters of turntablism. Coildn't go wrong with RJD2 too.
Boards of Canada - Tycho. Their latest album, Dive, is fantastic. I saw them perform as a live band and they were basically incredible.
Deerhunter - Perhaps No Age. They're noise rock masters.
Gorillaz - Blur?
Iron & Wine - Woods. They both have that lovely whimsical folk sound. Woods could get a little more psych rock at times, though.
Nick Drake - Bill Callahan/Smog. Just amazing. Again, not really similar at all, I just think it works in the whole "if you like that, you'll like this" thing.
Sorry if this is too overwhelming or stuff you already know. Thanks for thinking of me Alberto. I added you on Last.fm.

Wow youre awesome Zapp. I was hoping someone would do some "If you like ___ you'll like ___" using my list. Out of that list I've only really extensively listened to Blur and Tycho. Blur is probably the next band I would have put on my list if I put 1 more. Gonna have a lot of listenin to do tomorrow
Can anybody help me with were to start with a couple artists? I really would like to know about Aphex Twin and Swans. I wasn't aware of Aphex Twin when I was in high school and Swans is just plain before my time. They are both from the era where Pitchfork is little help, so I need some assistance from the people who know. Thanks

Not into Swans, but as for Aphex...
Start with "Selected Ambient Works", then go to "The Richard D. James Album" for a different flavor. If you're into those, the second tier would be the Windowlicker EP, and his AFX and Polygon Window side projects.
