I like the Dodos guess, but I'd like to circle the discussion back around to Tune-Yards.
Someone said this earlier and I think it's a perfect fit. The original simpleton is a BirdBrain, the name of her first album, and she plays a misspelled mini-liar (lyre) a ukulele. She's also a very likely candidate to play the fest this year.
I originally posted this in the wrong thread but I'm thinking this is probably Eddie Vedder doing his ukulele songs... I'm working on the logic for the other parts of the clue besides mini-lyre right now
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

I haven't been following the clues very closely this year so apologies if this has already been discussed. Also I'm not sure how the avian thing would apply but what if the mini-liar was Mini-Me (Verne Troyer). A misspelling of that could be Menomena who have a new album due out with a tour presumably to follow. Furthermore the original simpleton could refer to Animal from the Muppet Show thus connecting "Mah Nà Mah Nà" to it. Any reactions?
Excited for Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Elton John, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Vampire Weekend, James Blake, The Flaming Lips, Jack White, Janelle Monae, Damon Albarn, Arctic Monkeys, Phoenix, Neutral Milk Hotel, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Ice Cube, Phosphorescent, and Disclosure.
