WAG.... Eric Church. Country-rock crossover. Just had a big album. Played lolla in 09. Not a country fan but could see this as a possible roo crossover that fits the clue.
haven't gotten around to connecting some of those bands to the rest of the clue, but if it really refers to someone who covered a black sabbath song, here are some bands i think could be possible:
marilyn manson the bad plus four tet guns 'n roses moby anthrax system of a down mogwai godsmack galactic meat puppets screaming trees (reunion?) faith no more ween cake flaming lips gov't mule dresdon dolls (they are reuniting for a tour in 2012)
If being lazy entails seeing the clue on twitter and jumping on inforoo to share my opinion, then sue me. Don't know who Gary is but maybe I should read everyone's bio to make sure there credible.
Gary Chardonnay is the guy from AC entertainment that writes and gives out the clues. He also runs the Ask Gary section on Bonnaroo.com.
However I dug around and I see that Soundgarden is playing Austalia this spring. I wiki'd Canton and the first place under "Places" is Canton Beach, New South Wales, Australia.
I also searched Soundgarden and under the "Established lineup, censorship, and rise in popularity (1991–1993)" section it states that "In anticipation of the band's appearance at Lollapalooza, a limited edition of Badmotorfinger was released in 1992 with a second disc containing the EP Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas (a palindrome), featuring Soundgarden's cover of Black Sabbath's "Into the Void", titled "Into the Void (Sealth)", which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1993."
getting a very bad feeling it's guns 'n roses, what with that whole tour going on now. guns = evil. roses = good. not sure about the rest of it though. and i've only heard bad things about this gnr tour.

Guns N Roses and Godsmack are the only two names on that list that I would not be okay with.

Okay. So is it safe to assume this list was the first time Gary saw the correct answer? Meaning we can eliminate anyone who had already been mentioned?

Good or evil? Canton-bound. Ascension linked to versions of the Sabbath
Good or Evil = Marilyn (Monroe)/ (Charles) Manson Canton-bound = Where he was born Ascension linked to versions of the Sabbath = Anti Christ Superstar -- ascending like a superstar, and perhaps an odd way of looking at the Sabbath???
Here's a quote from Wikipedia on his early life further indicating "Sabbath" or religion
Early life
Manson was born in Canton, Ohio. He is the only child of Barb (née Wyer) and Hugh Warner.[7] Manson is of German descent on his father's side, and is a fourth cousin twice removed of Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan.[7][8] In his autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, he detailed his grandfather's sexual fetishes (including bestiality and sadomasochism) influence to the forming of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.
As a child, he attended his mother's Episcopalian church, though his father was Catholic.[9][10] Warner attended Heritage Christian School from first grade to tenth grade.

This would eliminate faith no more, system of a down, marilyn manson, and guns n roses.
Good or evil: Still looking for a fitting song title or something for this.
Canton: 2 Four Tet songs are included in/"bound to" the CantonSpaceMix#1 by the Canton Space Project. Just reaching here since I couldn't find anything Canton-related with the other artists.
Black Sabbath: covered a song and is on the cover list gary liked.
In 1998 the band had their first singles chart success with a split single with Magoo of Black Sabbath cover versions reaching number 60 in the UK and an EP of "Fear Satan" remixes reaching number 57.
Our boy Gary referenced a post noting that the term 'ascension' refers to initial success.
So if the clue has to do with Sabbath could the answer be The Cult....
1. 2001 album titled Beyond Good & Evil 2. Tied to Black Sabbath by Eric Singer who played drums for Sabbath in 1985 and for the Cult. 3. Canton is the capital city of the Guangdong province in China. Guangdong is where the Taiping Rebellion(1850) began which involved the Imperial army attempting to defeat the Taiping Heavenly Army, which was viewed as a fanatical Christian cult.
The third point may be a stretch, but I think the first 2 make sense.
marilyn manson the bad plus four tet guns 'n roses moby anthrax system of a down mogwai godsmack galactic meat puppets screaming trees (reunion?) faith no more ween cake flaming lips gov't mule dresdon dolls (they are reuniting for a tour in 2012)
I thought about Moby earlier, especially since he played Moog, but I can't link him to the clue other than he covered a Sabbath song...
So eliminating the names mentioned before the list was posted
the bad plus four tet moby anthrax mogwai galactic meat puppets screaming trees (reunion?) ween flaming lips gov't mule dresdon dolls (they are reuniting for a tour in 2012)
galactic was also mentioned in here before gary posted.
