The conclusion I've reached: Obama isn't nearly in as much trouble as certain media outlets are making it seem. I feel more at ease about tonight's results after playing with this map.
My Dad voted Democrat for the first time since Slick Willie's second term. He never told me who he's voted for, and he basically went through 30 years of voting history with me this morning. Said as much as he knows Romney would get him a better bonus/pay (finance industry loves the GOP and the $ would start flowing again if he's elected), he can't in good conscience put him in charge of cleaning up the mess his party created. Was kind of surprised by this since he's fought with me for a year about who the better candidate was.
I asked him why he's argued with me over policies, economics, healthcare, etc. for the past year. His response was "I wanted you to know your sh*t, and the only way I know how to do that is tell you that you don't know what the hell you're talking about." I guess it worked, I was more motivated by his arguments than anyone else's.
thanks for sharing. just further proof that dads rule.
my dad is one of the few people who I disagree with politically that I can have a sane conversation with on the issues. he has helped sanely illuminate some of the reasons the other side believe what they do.
Custeph, I don't think it is just the South. We live up here in the 'burgh now. I have traveled and lived all over this country. We have family in the South still (thank God, so we have somewhere warm to vacation). This is totally just my opinion, but backwards, hate-filled, "God and guns" folks live everywhere. I experienced strange things in the deep South though...but it exists up here too.
Minnesota changed alot over the years as well. It used to be pretty darn liberal. Not so much anymore. Alot of my MN friends loved George W. and developed some pretty hateful ideologies over the years, against blacks, against gays, against the whole world it seems. Needless to say, it has been hard for me to maintain my friendships with some old friends.
Anywhoo, sorry for all that! I'm just meandering through my personal political timeline of these United States.
Drive 90 minutes NW from NYC and you would think you're on the set of Deliverance.

You are aware that 95% of the people reporting a pending Mittens win are on Rupert Murdoch's payroll, right?
There is a county measure here in LA that, among other traffic improvements, use SALES TAX MONEY to build a huge concrete sound barrier against a freeway while it passes through a wealthy neighborhood.
I hate how rich people seem to always get what they want.
LA County: NO on MEASURE J! What they need to do is work on enforcing fare compliance. Nobody pays for the metro anyways.

I just finished voting and I was strangely very excited to do it. Nothing out of the ordinary happened at the polls other than one of the smaller district elections had combined two candidates' names into one. I didn't realize this until I got home and thought about it, otherwise I would have mentioned this to them. I hope I'm not paranoid about that all day.
As far as Facebook goes, things are not as civil, which was to be expected. Here are a few gems that I am forcing myself not to respond to:
"Obama will grab an early lead today, until the Republicans get off work"
"If you cannot see why our current administration is failing then please comment. I would love to rip you a new one! but oh wait I have to goto work in the morning anf you don't!"
"But Romney is against gays dont ya know. Cant elect someone who doesnt care about the people of his country. That one always give me a chuckle."
"All done voting. Now this government handout loving, welfare abusing, 47% liberal is headed to a 10 hour workday." (I like this one)
Just read that 93 % of Belgium would vote for Obama. Also it seems that the rest of the world would also vote for Obama.
Because, I presume, the rest of the world likes it when the US has its missiles holstered instead of having the President walk around poking people with a stick hoping someone swings at him so he can use one.
Manders, it is my opinion that many people that I know personally or at least from my home state of Mississippi do not care whatsoever how the rest of the world feels. They enjoy having a president that every other country hates or fears. They think the United States is and should always be the greatest country in the world AT THE EXPENSE of other countries. It's an "if they don't like it, we'll bomb them to the ground" kind of mentality. It should not surprise you then that these same people do not care about inequality amongst race, gender, or religion. They will openly tell you that people are in the situations they are in because they are lazy and that whatever tiny success they have in life is because they busted their donkeys (and not because they were born with two parents that were at least middle class that were able to move them to a good school district). If all you care about is number one, you will never understand why people would ever vote for a "communist" like Obama.
Personally, I would much prefer the rest of the world having a better opinion of us than having anyone scared or angry at us.
I think it's strange that you guys can choose if you would like to vote. In Belgium we HAVE to vote or we face huge fines.
Given the voting rates here, the government would make a ton of money off a similar plan here.
I did see a table the other day that showed voting rates have gone up quite a bit since the 80's. Maybe people are deciding to be citizens again, rather than just consumers.
To expand, with the way voting for President is set up, it is hard to motivate certain parts of the country to get out to vote. An overwhelming majority of campaigning happens in a small amount of states since so many states were decided months ago for all intents and purposes. I was reading an article the other day were it said that there were 3-5 states (can't remember the exact number) that none of the four candidates touched in the general election. It mentioned that Romney only went to California, for instance, in order to do fundraising since he has basically zero chance of winning that state. I can relate to an earlier post from flanzo in that my individual vote in the Presidential election doesn't really matter for much in that Romney will carry Tennessee easily. I voted because I think it's important to exercise the right and one of my local races (shout out to iamthehorn is tightly contested, and I hate the Republican candidate.
Good old Tennessee, where you get the senate choice between Bob Corker (R) and a Democrat who has been denounced by the party for being an anti-gay rights activist.....what a state!

It's hard to grasp this type of shift in such a traditionally liberal state. Do you think it's a generational thing, population shifts, or people moving in/out? I was truly astonished to see polls saying Minnesota's gay marriage amendment was ~50/50, I figured it would be blown out of the water in Minnesota.

I know quite a few people from Minnesota, their families are VERY religious (as are most of their communities that they grew up in). My friends moved to NYC and became heathens, according to their families (seriously, that's what one of their moms called my friend when she refused to move back home after college).

Which means two different things according to who you ask. Pro-Obama: Obama has increased our esteem on the world stage. Anti-Obama: Obama makes us look weak, and other countries want to take advantage of it.

As the state's population became wealthier, and moved away from some of it's egalitarian Norwegian/Scandinavian rural independent roots, it became "redder." Congruently, I believe, alot of the Minnesotans adopted many of the Republican attitudes toward social issues and the such.
Oh, and kinda what Flanz said as well, but in a nutshell, Minnesota is just a very strange place.

I can't specifically speak to Minnesota but I do think that the conservatives have done a very, very good job in moving the bar as to what is even considered to be "liberal".
Basic premises like caring for the weakest and sickest among us are thrown about as if they are "lazy and shiftless", a woman's right to use birth control (let's not even talk about abortion) has been in question over the last few years for cryin out loud.
I think our culture has also gotten a hell of a lot more selfish and advertising has convinced people that they "need" things they can neither afford nor really change anything for them. Maybe that's why I love being on the farm so damn much a couple of days away from the machine.
"3 things every man should have on there "Christmas list". 1- Gas mask's for your family and yourself 2- more than enough guns and ammo 3- food to last up to a year for you and your people. If your solo get 1 of each. ~Better to be safe than sorry"
reading statuses like this is the only reason I can tolerate the election.

I have a feeling Minnesota might be coming back around, hopefully quick enough to shoot down both amendments today.
Is that because there's going to be a zombie apocalypse coming soon? Or because an Obama re-election means we're going to devolve into a bunch of warring city-states like the early days of Greece and everyone better be prepared to fight for what's theirs?
If you like that, just head over to BreitBart.com and start checking out the comments section. Holy hell. I have a sneaking suspicion that if we located every Breitbart commenter and put them each down with a cattle gun, the national I.Q. average would jump at least 25 points.
freedomrocks Is this America or Zimbabwe?
Canadianlady, Barack Obama Sucks It may as well be Zimbabwe, since Barack Obama came to office. I mean, do you recognize your country?
danrighty I wish these racist pigs would do this in Texas. What would happen would not be pretty. Sorry black bastards.
