Season 5 isn't vastly inferior. It's just not as good because the media subplot that gets put in is kind of a clunker. In it's defense, it does wrap up the individual character's storylines well which in turn sum up the series well. The series finale montage does possibly the best job ever of tying up everything in a series.
Every time a character is on the screen they are my favorite character. I've probably narrowed it down to an unranked top 5 of Omar, Bunk, Stringer, Bubbles, Bodie. I rarely see much love for Daniels, though, and he's definitely up there. All of these opinions will be different tomorrow.

Best character is a minor character and that's Brother Mouzone. Honestly, my favorite season after looking back on it is Season 2, only because it's so different from all the other seasons except 5, which was a wash for me since focusing on the media kind of killed it. I felt like they should have had less emphasis on the paper, but that's like complaining about your steak dinner at Ruth Chris's.

Even though season 2 is probably better than 5, I think I enjoyed 2 less. I just couldn't really care too much about any of the dock workers, and Ziggy annoyed the hell out of me.
Re-watching all the seasons might change my mind though. Two is just much more different from 1, so I probably wasn't quite expecting it.
There is no TV character, with the possible exception of season 2 Skyler White who had made me want to punch a female more than Namond Brice's mother. God, she is insufferable

Have you finished the series? There's a scene that will help with that.
Just finished Season 2 (for the third time). I must say, the first two times I watched Season 2, I didn't really care for it. I moreso thought it didn't have any real correlation with Season 1, other than Avon being locked up and Stringer taking charge, and it went in a completely different direction.
This time around though, it actually grew on me. The Union/Dock story was/is so-so. Ziggy is annoying as hell, and Frank Sabotka's character development was kinda off. It finally hit me though, that Season 2 is all about giving you a look into the world of where East/and now West Baltimore was getting their product. "The Greek" and their/his business w/ Prop Joe shed light into exactly how and who Prop Joe was getting his supply. It also helped arch the stories from Season 1 and Season 3 in the sense that Stringer and Prop Joe now have an agreement on distribution.
Also, Omar testifying in court against Bird is one of the best scenes in the series in my opinion.

^exactly...since I haven't watched The Wire since season 5 ended in real time, I forgot how annoying Ziggy was. Yes, he sucked. But looking into the world of the supply, that's where it was good.
Just finished season 4. Overall I loved it, I think I liked season 3 a little bit more though. Really tough call, I just think the last few episodes of season 3 were so incredible. Getting season 5 on dvd for christmas, can't wait to finish this show.

I just noticed this post and I have to disagree on Frank Sabotka. I will agree that Ziggy was annoying as hell but I think that was intentional. But I thought Frank Sabotka was such a powerful representation of a good man forced to do less than admirable things to save what he loved. I thought he was a great addition and honestly wish we saw more of his legacy in later seasons.
Also as a gift for me being horribly vomitous this morning and being stuck in bed bored all day, my parents have been kind enough to give me Season 5 early (was supposed to be getting it from them for xmas) so I could have something to do for the next few days. Hooray
Feel better soon friend! I agree with you. That's the reason why I stated I felt that Frank's character development was a little off. I wish we saw more of Sabotka in Season 2 and less of Ziggy and Sabotka's nephew. Frank is one of my favorite characters from Season 2.
just started season 1. sucks knowing stringer bell is going to die but atleast I won't know which season/episode.
SPOILER
In the middle of season 2 I was watching YouTube Clips from Season 1. I'd forgotten that YouTube does their recommended videos, and I saw a video entitled "Stringer Bell Dies." Pretty much broke my heart.
Anyway, just started re-watching season 1 last night, and I'd almost forgotten about this awesome scene.
Almost forgot how terribly incompetent and annoying Pres was too to start the series.

I tried to get Abra to watch the series, but she expressed disinterest after one episode. It was weird to see all the characters at the beginning when you know how all their stories go.
rdk, don't get to disappointed about knowing about Stringer. I had the same thing spoiled for me before I started the series. I barely noticed since there is a lot that goes on before it happens.
I was lucky enough to not have THAT spoiled, but I had a few other things spoiled. Also, I am ALMOST done.
Lucky for me one of the discs that came with season 5 doesn't work right off the bat so I get to watch wonderfully bootlegged versions of episodes 7-9. White people problems, right?
I would have to rate the seasons as 3, 2, 4, 1, 5. But the closeness of 3 2 and 4 is sooo hard to distinguish them. I also didn't hate the newspaper plotline as much as a lot of the shows fans seemed to. I don't even really know where to begin talking about this show, though. Soo uhhh, SPOILERS FOLLOW:
I do have to say that even though I loved seasons 4 and 5 I just felt like Marlo Stanfield was a weak antagonist compared to Avon and Stringer, but I think that was supposed to be that way to show the detectives' lack of interest in chasing him vs chasing Avon Barksdale. Towards the end though, when he leaves that party with Levy and goes down to the corner, that made me like his character a little bit more. Another moment that made me like him a lot was that moment in the cell when he finally finds out about Omars badmouthing and has his first and only emotional reaction that we see on the show. That whole "my name is my name" speech was awesome.
Also loved the hilarious death of Cheese. "This sentimental mothafucker just lost us money!"
Omar's death.... holy shit. So amazing that he was one of the most central characters to the show and they just constantly reiterated how little his death meant to any of the characters on the show except for the purpose of spreading hood tall tales ("Nah man I heard Omar had the AK and he was surrounded by the cops")
Brilliant show. So glad I finally watched it. I'll take a break for a few months and then give it another re-watch.
Yes to this thread. Easily the most underrated show of all time. No cop-drama ever comes close to this show.
Seasons 3 and 1 are the best in the series. The whole story arc involving Barksdale-Stringer is awesome. Plus Bunk and McNulty seem to have funnier drinking nights in the early seasons. And when Bell got killed, fuck my mind was blown.
Season 2 would be third. Really liked how they portrayed the death of the working class in that season and Nick was a great character. Really depressing ending to the season though.
Seasons 4 and 5 were the weakest. I never liked any of the characters in Marlo's crew. Important message with the school system and all but definitely didn't draw me in. Bodie and Omar, damn.
I really really love the school plotline and a lot of the stuff from season 4, those kids are all fantastic. I loved Randy and Namond, and I was so sad when they showed Dukie shooting up at the end of season 5, but I just think Marlo Stanfield is nothing compared to Avon Barksdale. Avon had character, Marlo's thing was that he was cold, quiet, and calculated, and towards the end of the show they definitely made him a better character but in season 4 he was just kind of weak. Don't get me wrong, it's an incredible season, as they all are, but if I had to rank em season 4 would def be below 3 and 2. But by centimeters.
