On the hotel front, the good thing about the location is that you can jump on I40 and get to Bartlett / Cordova area in about 20 minutes, or West memphis in about 3 minutes. You should be able to find a hotel within too much of a driving range.
I imagine that Beale Street gets pretty crazy, but I avoid that place like the plague, even when nothing is going on, so I couldn't say for sure.
Phi, you've been here before? I'm thinking about heading down, does the city get really crazy and do hotel rooms get really hard to come by?
And the city does get nuts during the festival, because a lot of other things are going on for "Memphis In May" in general. Most hotels downtown are already full, but like someone else mentioned, there are TONS of hotels within a 5-15min drive on the interstate.
And Beale St. does get INSANE after the shows! I will probably avoid it this year but we hit it up every night last year and it was shoulder to shoulder down the street, and even worse inside the bars.
How does the scheduling normally work? What time to bands usually start and end?
I think its like late mid-day until about 11 or 12 every night. I remember nothing was late at all.
The only thing that sucks is they normally put 3 acts on at almost the exact times across the stages. Last years Flaming Lips vs. STP sucked.
Those times would work great for leaving my mornings open. I'm guessing that this probably isn't the most kid friendly fest. I've needed to make a trip down that way to visit my brother and I'd like to bring my daughter with me (she's 11). I just don't know about taking her somewhere like this though.

I'll be seeing the Melvin's in Atlana in late April, but that late show makes this even more appealing. One of my favorite active bands. Melvins, MMJ, Primus, Al Green, K.R.I.T., Megadeth in one weekend. Solid spread.
