How he (Mark Foster) sounded at the Grammys is pretty much how he sounds on the album. I like his voice, but if you weren't aware, the other guy Cubbie sings almost equal amount if not more of the songs. His (Cubbie's) voice is kinda similar, but different enough that it completes their sound, IMHO. Listen to the gdmf album already if you haven't...
I know they're only major label as a result of Pumped Up Kicks, but they still feel an awful lot like a major label's idea of what an indie band should sound like.
If that song wasn't a huge crossover hit they'd much more "cred" from people. Its not their fault they wrote a song that got popular and overplayed. I'm sure most people on this board thought it was a good song until top 40 radio discovered it.

None of us listen to top 40 radio. It's kind of why we're here, not on the bamboozle forums.

Not saying you do. But that is why the song is overplayed.
What I'm trying to say is that wouldn't be the reason we would dislike it, which I don't think anyone has really said anyway.
Not saying you or anyone in particular, but its easy to dislike something that is popular, especially in music. It would be cooler to like them if they weren't so big. Thats all I'm saying. Maybe its the hipster way.

I feel the same way about Pumped Up Kicks as I do about Wagonwheel.
It's a good song, catchy and fun. But I've heard it a millionbajillion times to the point where I'm just sick of it and want it to go away before it becomes Mambo Number 5.
My general rule is that if a modern day band's song makes it to my dad's ipod, then it is overplayed.
(1) Damon Albarn (2) Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (3) King Khan & His Shrines (4) Ty Segall (5) Ms Lauryn Hill (6) Darkside (7) Kanye (8) Janelle Monae (9) Goat (10) Meshuggah.

I didn't even know about them until I saw them on the Lollapalooza webcast. They opened with "Warrant." That song makes for a great set opener. "Pumped Up Kicks" is pretty bad (not because of its chart position), though I like pretty much the rest of their work.
Couple guys from Foster are apparently going to be doing remixes under the moniker Smims & Belle. This remix they did of a Lana Del Rey song featuring Azealia Banks is insane. I know those two names combined with Foster will have many rolling their eyes, but listen to it. I've been playing it all morning:
Yeah they're great at a festival. I don't think they pretend to be anything more than buku fun, catchy pop. I don't feel guilty about it at all. There's more than enough space for them in the spectrum of music I listen to and I still love going back to that album. Plus when I saw them they talked about how they had a group of people who travel with them from city to city to do service projects and raise money for charities. I'm sure that type of thing appeals to some folks around here.

Where do they play though? Definitely billed high enough for a stage act and big enough for Pre-Headline set into Radiohead. Long shot? I don't think so.
LN Which is another possibility being billed next to Skrillex and could put on an interesting/fun show. But i'd like to see The Roots up there.
Primus slot too, scheduling for the big slots have me stumped. Love it.

Their album has about 40 minutes worth of material on it. Also, they don't have a lot of new material based on this quote from Mark Foster: "Hopefully we'll have a song or two out by the end of the year..." Obviously songs can be expanded and fleshed out a bit, but I find it hard to believe they would pre-headline What with at most an hour's worth of material. Honestly, they have a Tent's worth of music, but will be playing Which stage
I like this band a lot more than I feel like I should. That's not meant to be a put down.
Seriously, Helena Beat and Houdini are two of the most catchy, enjoyable songs I've heard in the past few years. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's terrific music for playing very loud in your car. I imagine it would make for a very fun festival set as well. Unless there is a major conflict, I'd check their set out for sure.
I don't get the hate myself. Any time decent music ends up on top 40 radio is always a good thing. Those of us doing the pit line for Radiohead most likely won't get to see Foster the People. But that's just the way things go.
I got a copy of Torches before it was out last year, and loved it. Then promptly saw them play at the smallest stage at Sasquatch '11, and it was PACKED OUT. I thought for sure that there'd only be a few people there, but it was so packed I couldn't see, even standing on a picnic table. We had cheap tix to see them and Gardens & Villa a month later in the basement (Hell) of the Masq in ATL, and they put on such an AMAZING show, that we bought tickets right then and there to see their second show at the Masq later in the year around September. They got so big in those summer months that the 2nd Masq show went from the larger upstairs stage (Heaven) to the OUTDOOR stage which is a music "park!" And now, of course, they're playing one of the amphitheaters here. Meteoric rise, indeed.
For that second show, they did a super long version of Houdini, with a crazy-good remix bit for the entire last half of the song. DanceOffPantsOff Party.
Im really excited to see them at Roo. Hopefully they play when the sun is down so I can dance my face off.

This is a hot remix. If they get a LN Which slot, I need them to DJ this track during their set!
Mark Foster also has that song with A-Trak and Kimbra that more electronic.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I had a similar experience. I got tickets to see them with gardens and villa in a small Chicago venue. Didn't expect it to sell out, but it did and then scalper tix were going for 5x the face value!
They put on a really good show! But in all honesty, I think I was jiving more to gardens & villa.
I saw them at Soundland here in Nashville and had low expectations, and they blew them out of the water. To be honest, I hate Pumped Up Kicks. And it's not just because its overplayed...I hated it from the beginning. Turns out however that the rest of their album is solid.
I would check them out again at Roo, but getting a good spot for Radiohead is more important for me
So I know a lot of hate has been directed at Foster the People, and even as a fan, I myself was hesitant about seeing them live after some old reviews. But they must have fallen into their groove, because this live video is great!
