I don't need Wikipedia to know this guy is NOT a big game coach. I don't need to look this up. Look at how many quality teams he had...heck in 97 he had 5 pro players on the team and COULD NOT MAKE THE FINAL FOUR (Remember, Vaughn was challenged to hit an open jumper and couldn't?)
Paul Pierce is the only worthwhile player from that team. Please don't even bother bringing up Raef Lafrentz, Jacques Vaughan or that idiot Scott Pollard (he of "Kids, do drugs" fame). They lost to Jason Terry & Mike Bibby, two pretty good pro's in their own right, no?
So I guess all teams who only played segregated should be overlooked. Guess that 57 championship is gone huh?
I'm fine with that. I don't put a lot of stock into leagues that were too racist to allow athletic black men play in their sport. There is a reason people don't consider George Mikan the greatest center ever, and it's because he played against 6'5 white guys for 95% of his career.

I never compared Rupp to Wooden. I said forgetting about the past would be like forgetting about Coach Wooden. Matter of fact, i never once said anything about Rupp in my original post at all. Perhaps ANOTHER reread would help (makes three dude. Your starting to choke like Roy)
Coach Cal has had three loaded teams (One at Umass, One at Memphis, One at UK)
I don't wanna get writers cramp with how many loaded teams Roy has had.

Well, if Cal is a "better recruiter than coach," but has only had three loaded teams, how bad of a coach is he!?
Ok, I'm done, I promise. I have to focus on work now or I'm never leaving today and my 3-day weekend will become a 2-day weekend. Thanks for entertaining my nonsense, this is obviously a discussion that could go around and around with no one conceding an inch.
I will just leave you with this photo, no caption necessary because I know a big hoops fan such as yourself knows what game this was:

I was at that game in my mother's womb.
Edit: To be fair to about the Cal's loaded team's. -His 96 UMASS team lost to Kentucky in the Final Four. That UK team is one of the Top 5 best college bball teams of all time. So no bad coaching or shame in that - The Memphis team should have won that game. A couple flukey things and Chris Douglas Roberts missing a bunch of free throws cost him that one. - Don't know if Pondo is referring to UK 2010 or 2012 as his other loaded team, but I say that there is no shame in getting to the Elite Eight, but they should have won it that year. - I think UK12 is better than UK10. - Cal deserves a lot of credit for getting UK11 to the Final Four. that team definitely overacheived.
Edit 2: Flanz misread your post hence the above explanations.

I agree totally with your above statements. I was referring to 2010 when UK had 5 first round NBA draft picks. Coach Cal got outcoached that game by Bob Huggins, who used a simple 1-3-1 zone to shut us down.
I also say the 1998 championship team was the most overachieving UK team ever.

I'm gonna break up this back and forth by saying/writing how bummed I am about Ohio State's recent play. I had to turn off the game today. They were throwing up enough bricks to build a brownstone. Horrible offense. Sometimes I hate the Big 10. It can be such an un-artistic basketball league. By the way, I think you can eliminate OSU from the national title contender race. I don't see how they'd score against a UK or Syracuse.
We'll learn a lot at Iowa and when MSU comes to town. I could honestly see IU getting a 3 or 4 seed and making a run in the tournament.
And what did we learn at Iowa? INDIANA CANNOT WIN ON THE ROAD! One game over 500 in the conference and 2-6 on the road with "wins" coming against Penn State (Beyond Terrible) and Purdue (Robbie Hummel is still there...isn't he like 55 now?). I have said it over and over...Indiana struggles on the road, they will continue to struggle on the road and hopefully, they will make the tournament. A few losses could have them out. If they lose at Minnesota (wait that's a road game, never mind)... they need to beat MSU but if they don't, they REALLY need a win against Purdue. A losing record in the Big Ten might keep them out and NIT bound, as crazy as that may sound.

Indiana "might" make the tournament? Come on man take off the blinders. If the season ended today they'd be a 5 or 6. If they lose 2 of their last 3 but win only one game in the Big Ten tournament I don't see them worse than a 6 or 7. I really don't like Crean and co. but it's pretty crazy to suggest they could miss the tourney.
Also, you keep harping on road record. Kentucky was also 2-6 on the road in conference last year, and stunningly (sarcasm) managed to reach the Final 4. Obviously I'm not saying '10 Kentucky = '11 Indiana, but road success in no way automatically translates to tournament success.

We also won the SEC tournament. I suppose you forgot those road (non-home)wins. 5-6 ended up being our SEC road record. We also lost no home games (Minnesota, really?) Finished 10-6 before the SEC tournament.
You really think IU has a chance to win the Big Ten tournament? All I said about iU was first said by Joe Linardi, Bracketologist for ESPN. If, and it would be highly unlikely they lose them all, If IU loses there next 3 conference games, they would be 8-10 in conference and very possibly NIT bound.

If they can't finish at least .500 in conference I wouldn't be at all surprised if they missed out on the tourney. The committee will put emphasis on the second half of the season and how the teams are playing heading into the post season. I think they will be in, but its not too far fetched to say they may end up a little short.

At no point did I say Indiana has a chance to win the Big Ten Tournament.
Neutral site games (which is what Kentucky was playing on in the SEC tournament last year) do not equal road games. Kentucky won 2 games on the road in conference last year.
I nominate that I would beat anyone in this thread at one on one.
I'm 6'0" and played for a small college - I could dunk back in the day - but I'm 40 now and have had enough blown ankles, dislocated fingers, etc. that I'm retired for all intensive purposes. I used to love those kind of challenges, though.

My question is this: If IU is 8-10 in conference play, do you really think they will make the tournament?
How does a neutral site game not equal a road game? You are NOT playing at home, you're playing on the road.

Perhaps but I value Neutral wins more than home wins (remember, you are SUPPOSED to win all of your home games.) To me, a home loss is something that you should never have more than one of a year.

I actually didn't even play in HS. I was a wrestler, but being born and bred in Indiana kind of makes sure that you spend entire weekends on the court.
It's hard for me to take Kentucky seriously when I honestly think they could be beaten by 5 teams in the Big Ten.
Uh which teams? Ohio State whom we beat in the tournament last year when they were better than they are now? Michigan, whom on a neutral court we would beat by double digits? Michigan State would offer a tough test but on a neutral court, it would be close and we would win because of size. Indiana on a neutral court (do I really have to answer that? Remember they hit 7 three's ina ROW at HOME and only beat us by 1 and we played our worst game of the year)...who else? Did I miss the New AP poll that has UK somewhere else other than #1? How about the coaches poll that also has UK number 1? Michigan State is the only team I could think of that would have a chance...who is your fifth? Wisconsin> (Can they even score?)
I guarantee one thing: we would NEVER lose to Iowa or Nebraska home or away.

Last nights game reminds me of just how much Kentucky is a second half team. That could spell trouble in the tournament though (Remember last year, UConn played a great first half and UK played beyond horrible. Played much better second half and actually outscored UConn in second half points but it was too little too late and Kemba played great)
Miss. St. played great last night with NOTHING to lose. This was there big game (pretty much everybody's big game when you play UK in the SEC) and UK showed patience and poise down the stretch and Miller's Senior leadership and MKG shutting down Dee Bost in the second half were key factors.
