I can't agree with this just yet. Ravedeath was smack you in the side of the head good. This is a grower.
I would absolutely agree with your last two sentences. It took me ten listens, all this weekend, to come to my conclusion. The departure is stark and meaningful, while still filling space better than his last two.
Outstanding. I enjoyed last year's debut by this group to some extent:
It showed great promise and had some enjoyable moments, but fell short of really blowing me away. It felt as though they were holding back a little. This time around, they don't sound the slightest bit reserved. Tim Berne has had a fantastic run last year and this year, appearing on a large number of impressive records, but on this album he takes his performances to the highest level I've heard yet. The passion, intensity, and often raw power he delivers are awe-inspiring. Overall the sound is more varied as compared to the debut, including some vibes from Ches Smith, in addition to his percussion duties. Oscar Noriega and Matt Mitchell are both skillful as well. I am generally speaking not a big fan of most ECM releases, but it is refreshing to see them putting out albums like this to keep things interesting for the label.
