Man, this new Shins album blows pretty hard. The single is good. The rest is sort of like eating printer paper.
Feeling the same way about the new Volta record. I think I've either completely outgrown them, or they just don't have it anymore...
No, they definitely still have it... it's their best album (by far) since Amputechture... it's just not overly wanky, proggy hard rock, anymore. This one is dividing the fan base, evenly, but I'm glad they're sounding different now... not so much into the proggy stuff I was into when Frances and Amp dropped, this is more in tune with my current tastes. If they returned to record another Bedlam, then I'd be questioning whether they still had it... there's only so much full throttle ridiculousness you can handle, and while they're they best at making ridiculous music, it's all the better that they are restraining themselves a bit now and expanding on their general arrangements not being a 1972 Yes song.
How's the rest of this album? I got the first single as an iTunes freebie last night but not sure if it's indicative of the rest... it feels rather like cotton candy: sweet, nice texture, but zero substance.
