That actually looks fun. I read about it in Chuck Palahniuk's Stranger Than Fiction. You should Google it. Not at work of course.
That'll be a hard pass, based off the description alone. Yikes. It sounds like spring break gone horribly wrong.
it sounds like a lot of ranchers who haven't seen nearly enough of the opposite sex (or same sex, I guess) in recent years all getting together to express how sick of looking at cattle and horses they are.

I envision a lot of middle aged folks in denim.
That (most likely accurate) description makes it sound even more terrifying.
Of course it is Mardi Gras here. Dumb. So many better must do things in Louisiana, or at least New Orleans.
I'd take Mardi Gras over the fucking Thanksgiving Day Parade. Seriously, NYS has better things to offer.
Actually, can NYC just become it's own thing, like D.C.? No, nevermind, i don't want to live in a completely red state.
Haha, there's a reason why people in Ithaca have bumper stickers that read: "Ithaca: 10 square miles surrounded by reality". It's a bastion of unabashed liberalism in the otherwise very conservative 23rd congressional district (aka the charming Southern Tier).

I'm just glad they put sturgis bike rally down for south dakota and not some bullshit like laura ingalls wilder's birthday.
Biggest spit take moment of the holidays was my stepmom talking about how her and my dad are going to Sturgis and how she was going to be topless the entire time because, apparently, the ladies aren't allowed to wear shirts.

News Flash: Your dad lied to her.
Also, I'm not sure what exactly the Foxfield Races are, in Virginia, but I can assure you it looks about as cornbread as you can get.

Women can go topless in NYC as well. They have book clubs.

I bet you're grateful it's not a vacation for the whole family.

Apparently, I need to start reading actual books again.

I think that's a rule that only applies those 55 & up. it's like a senior discount.
Ok, I have a couple questions, since this is starting to bug me a little bit.
Question #1: I find that while club/venue are more expensive on the whole, they're better experiences generally than going to a festival (Bonnaroo may be an exception, I'l find out in 2016.) Am I alone in this?
Question #2: I'm a senior in high school and have my colleges narrowed to three: Mizzou, Minnesota-Twin Cities, and Arizona State. What are the concert scenes like in Columbia, Minneapolis1, and Phoenix2? Not that these would be huge factors in my decision (ok they'd be sort of big, I want to enjoy my time at uni), but I'd like to know regardless.
Question #3: For Mizzou specifically, how easy is it to get from Columbia to St. Louis/KC?
1. smellycat, help me out here. 2. I'm studying journalism, which is on the Phoenix campus.
ohhhhkay. I'm finally responding to this.
1. that's debatable. I would say most club venue prices (at least around here) are really reasonable. most shows I go to are between $12 - $25 before fees, which I think is really reasonable. it's only when you get to shows at huge venues where they're a bit more spendy - like arcade fire last year, I paid about $85 for GA. but experience-wise, that totally depends on the show and the crowd. first ave likes to oversell their crowds sometimes, especially when the shows are sponsored by the current, and then the entire damn audience only knows like 2 songs and then they talk and shove around for the rest. overall, at least in minneapolis, the crowds can be a lot less respectful and not as friendly as bonnaroo. I think both experiences are awesome, but I think I will always prefer a festival show. and there's just something about the way the sound travels in an outdoor crowd - it just gets me so giddy.
2. I'm going to assume minneapolis has the best music scene of your 3 choices. the music scene here rules. to give you an idea, here are all the shows I went to in 2014 alone - and this was with eliminating some to try and not blow all of my money on concerts and because of other conflicts (spoiler because it's long):
there are quite a few great venues here, first ave in particular, and the music that comes through is obviously great. there's a lot of local stuff happening all the time, but I'll be honest that I pay really minimal attention to it. some people here really dig the local scene, though.
so yeah, the music scene is killer here - there's rarely a shortage of good shows.
minneapolis overall: the winter fucking blows. like, I grew up & have lived in the midwest my entire life, and this is unbearable. may - october are really nice though, especially the summer. activity-wise, there's a lot to do here. between new restaurants, museums, bars (some music venues are 21+ FYI, so get working on that...), art scene, professional sports teams, and festivals alllllll throughout summer (seriously, every week in the summer there is some sort of block party/festival/fair happening), there's always something to do. and in the summer there's lake calhoun to chill at, along with bike trails and all sorts of outdoor activities (movies in the park!). it really is a beautiful city.
also, if you stick with journalism, this is a great place to be. I work in advertising, and the communications field here is really big. you would have a lot of opportunities to gain experience.
I will say, though, that I went to U of M my first semester, hated it, and transferred back to south dakota (where I'm from). but, that was over 6 years ago, and obviously I liked it here enough to come back. but classes there (at least at first) are HUUUGE. and pretty much everyone around you has probably known each other since kindergarten and they aren't really open to making new friends, so be aware of that. I'm super super outgoing, and still have a hard time forming solid friendships with people from around here.
so there's some good and there's some bad, but go live in the place that excites you the most - there's no reason you shouldn't live wherever you feel like right now.
this is why I waited forever to post this. because I knew I would write a long as fuck response.
Guessed correctly that Indiana's would be the Indy 500. I've been a couple of times and I never pay attention to racing, but I think it's something that everyone should attend at least once. It's always a fun time, whether your in the grandstands or watching from the infield.
you gonna be hittin' up that arnold classic this year?
Ugh, The Arnold Classic. I've actually been more times than i'd like to admit. But those days are behind me. However, I need a date for the Testical Festival. Any volunteers?!
not surprised to see MN is the state fair, cool that Bonnaroo is Tennessee's though
Connecticut's Milford Oyster Fest is boring. The alternatives (Woodstock Fair and similar) aren't much better. This is the state that has no personality of its own. At least you're never more than 90 minutes from a neighboring and far less boring state.
