Houston would allow me to fly in and catch a festival and enjoy some Tex-Mex and then head to the coast. If I'm going to visit Texas on more than a layover flight or driving on I-10 I'd like to see both the city and the coastline is all.
I haven't been to Galveston since I was in high school, but I've always thought of the Gulf Coast in that area to be pretty trashy. If you want nice beaches in Texas, you'll have to go further south to Corpus Christi, South Padre, etc.
Not trying to rain on your parade, just don't want you to plan a trip to Galveston expecting it to be really cool!
Idk where Scud lives, but if he's land locked like me then a beach is a beach. I don't care how trashy a beach is, I'll go & I'll love every second of it. But besides festivals, the beach is my absolute favorite place on earth.

You know about 5 years ago that would have been true. But in the last five years they've really invested money and built up the whole island. I mean they have there own version of the Santa Monica Pier
You're just too young to grasp how stylin' I really was. All the boys wanted to do me when I was 5. Actually the girls did too. My haircut was confusing.

Very cool, didn't know that. I'll reserve all future judgement of Galveston until I get to experience it again

Not at all. I appreciate it. Just trying to see all the edges of our Country. Thank you. I'll keep that in mind.

"It's a neat idea, until you have to figure out what to do with the results in a responsible way."
I know, I know, probably shouldn't be throwing away lots of plastic bags but it seems so luxurious!
I actually have a portable camping toilet. I believe it was $80 and it was the absolute best investment ever. It has a flush and everything on it. I used to have a 3 room cabin tent and I actually made one room my bathroom & changing room. It was the best thing ever. Easily the best $80 I've ever spent.
All that said, that looks ingenious, I'd just use thicker trash bags. Take the trash bag and drop in the Porto when your done/ passing by one.

"It can be buried in any typical landfill (95% of all trash ends up here), or placed in backyard compost bin, and you can rest assured they will disappear in a short time."
So I just found out one of my regulars from my old job back in AZ passed away back in May. We weren't super close friends or anything but it has me a little shaken because he died of a stroke a few days before his 30th birthday. A stroke!
The last time I saw him was before I made the move back to Mississippi. We actually sat down and had a long talk, the longest we've ever had, and he loved reading so I asked him to write down a list of books he recommended. I still have the list and every time I look at it I think "Soon" I feel really awful that I haven't tried to tackle that list.
I really need to stop putting things off. I know that each day isn't promised to us but times like this really show you how real that statement is. Rest in peace Scott. You were a great guy, hella weird, amazingly smart and it was always a pleasure to talk with you.
Sorry if this brings anyone down...I didn't know where else to post this. I was thinking about posting to his Facebook but I wasn't comfortable doing that. The only reason I even know is because someone tagged him in a post and it happened to pop on my feed. This sucks

I got a message the other day from a friend saying one of my regulars from the coffee shop I used to work at died. It's really quite odd how someone who seems "insignificant" (hopefully you understand what I mean by that) in the grand scheme can cause you to do some much introspection. For me it was just this weird feeling that this guy I used to talk to every single day is now no longer going to be going for his evening coffee... I dunno man. I feel ya though.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
