I used to go to Trader Joe's on a weekly basis, but now I moved and it isn't quite as convenient to go, so I don't go too often any more. They have the most ridiculous variety of frozen foods available, plus almost everything you really need (bread, meats, cereal, diary, etc.) at a good-to-great price in my experience -- not to mention the $3 wine and decent selection of beer.
Their frozen mac and cheese is one of the best things ever.
I love Trader Joe for the cheap booze, but in general I don't like how most of the stuff is pre-prepared or pre-marinated or whatever. I like to cook my own food. It's cheaper and more fun (although TJ is pretty reasonable).
I agree on that. I don't often go just because it's a whole exit away (oh the horror!), but I like the hummus choices there and the cheeeeeeeese. And the nuts!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Wegmans is great because they have their own brand of everything including their own organic brand. They sell a ton local produce as well as imported. They have the best selection of organic/natural foods I have seen and it's affordable. Best of all it's all one stop shopping. I like going to Trader Joes and Whole Foods but I would not be able to do a full grocery shopping trip there.
If I could choose only one grocery store to go to, it would be Big Y. It's a smaller chain, so most of you wouldn't know it, but they are they depend on local goods. In addition to local produce, they also do local milk, local baked goods, etc. Each has a little handwritten sign describing where the item cam from. But it's also a big store with their own brand and normal items as well. Pricing is average to slightly above average, but the sales are phenomenal (even as far as buy one, get two free).

I've never heard of Wegmans, but I am an ALDI evangelist. I tell all my friends about ALDI, all the damn time.
The best part about ALDI is that what you're buying is a name brand product, just with an generic label. That's how they stay so cheap, they buy the products from General Mills, Kraft, Betty Crocker etc etc, without the brand labeling, and put their own on. My favorite item is the frozen whole sock eye salmon they have occasionally, and whole leg of lamb, at easily half the price of the grocery store.

When it comes to produce, I have a Whole Foods in my backyard: My garden. I haven't bought hardly any produce since late April. I do all organic as well. It's cheaper to do organic anyway. I crush egg shells and use grass clippings and compost for fertilizer. Laid down about 30 bucks in mushroom manure to condition the soil. I save seeds each year for planting so I only have to buy my tomato, pepper, and zucchini plants. I don't treat for pests. I catch ladybugs and take them to the garden (haven't hardly had a pest problem thanks to the ladybugs this year). I use my cats' hair to layer around the perimeter of the garden to keep deer and rabbits away. Ahhh, gardening. Just alot of work but so rewarding and healthy. But, organically, is so much cheaper and much healthier (and actually more productive) than anything chemical.
If I could run a fully self-sufficient farm, I'd be happy as a pig in mud. Some day.

Wegmans is my go to for groceries. I no longer live near WF or TJ so it's my best option. I enjoy the variety of vegetarian items and the fact they do try to run sales on more than just store brands. Their bulk candy section still holds a special spot in my heart.

^That vid reminded of me of the strange 1980's work-out and porno vids that Tobacco was showing during his set last night as an opener for the FLips. He likes obscure beta tapes from the '80's. They were all very disturbing, some of them funny, but most of them, just confusing.
I didn't know Tobacco guy, Thomas Flec, is with Black Moth Super Rainbow, and that they're from my city, Pittsburgh.

Did they reference why they were playing the vidoes? or did they just R.Kelly that shit?
The outrage at Rolling Stone putting the Boston Bomber on their cover is ridiculous, but not terribly surprising. Seems most people would rather blindly hate than try to understand why a person did what they did. The best part is this is all coming from people who haven't read the article (too be fair neither have I, yet)

I didn't get there until half-way in, so maybe he said why those particular beta tapes were being used in the beginning. But, I think they just R. Kelly'ed that shit.
I'm already curious myself about his choice to use such disturbing images of women (some of the scenes were of women being chased by alien creature men with ginormous dongs looking to rape and some other scenes emphasized women being victimized by monsters and others focused on the females' fake pleasure porn faces). It made me wonder if these were deliberate choices to demonstrate the misogynistic portrayal of females in various media or if he just found these to be the most particularly disturbing. Or if he just likes women's "o-faces." Ha. I dunno.

They are a strange bunch, so any of those answers could be plausible.

I never cared much for Big Y. They seem to have the highest prices, smallest amount of stuff I want on sale, and aren't open after 9 pm around here.
The nearest Trader Joe's is a half hour away, the nearest Whole Foods is like 45 minutes, and the one Wegmans in New England (which opened last year in Northboro MA) is like 40 minutes. Whole Foods is incredibly expensive and I think overrated.
I usually stick to Stop and Shop or Price Chopper. Though when they carry like 80% of the market around here, it's not too difficult to stick to those two.
Aldi is amazing for stuff that you don't need (i.e. fruit snacks, chips, ice cream). You're just asking too much for them to have legit produce. So my advice would be to eat worse.
It wasn't fresh, it was a jar! But I have friends that claim shopping at ALDI cuts down on their grocery bill a ton.
Hmmm, this changes things a bit. However, I'm going to stick with you need to eat worse to truly appreciate the ALDI brand.
One way that ALDI keeps stuff dirt cheap is by reducing overhead as much as possible. This brings rise to certain rules which the ignorance of can cause you some difficulty. 1) You have to have a quarter to get a shopping cart. You put it in a lock on the handle to remove it from the corral. When you bring it back, you get your quarter back. It saves them having to have an employee gather all of them from the parking lot. 2) They don't bag your groceries. You have to bring your own or, like I did yesterday, take empty boxes from the shelves as I went through the store. 3) They don't take credit cards. Debit cards, yes.
