Hope all of our folks in Boston are ok. Really shizzy things like this happen. No real words to put to it.
The last five years, I had went to Boston for Patriots Day (third Monday in April) - went to the Red Sox game, then down to Boylston St. to check out the scene and a little bit of the marathon before going to hit up a bar. This year, I didn't.
I went to work, and earlier today I was kinda pissed about breaking the streak. I am now so so thankful I was not up there this afternoon, as I would have been within a few blocks to the west of this. I'm stunned, it's so crazy things like this can happen in Boston on a day like this.
Trying to figure out how to talk to the kids about this. She's 8 and he's 12 and for sure he'll see it on the news in the morning. I hate to get them worked up over something we have no answers about. Grrrr. I really want to be Anne Frank, people are basically good but I'm starting to think that people are basically assholes.

There's a bit of both. On a day like today, it's pretty easy to see who is on what side.
I lost my faith in humanity a long time ago. But as someone pointed out on another message board, what makes you feel that glimmer of hope is all those people running to the explosion, rather than away from it. There will always be some people who do terrible, senseless things. But there always seem to be more people running to aid others. People coming together is a beautiful thing, it's just saddening when it happens because of something tragic like this.

I'm glad you broke the streak.
My traditional watching spot is a block and a half to the west. I would have been out of harm's way, but close enough to have heard stuff go off and see the fleeing masses come sprinting up Boylston in my direction.

I played Amadou & Mariam for my Somalian can driver and he is in love with them. It is great to expose people to new things that they find joy in.
I feel like the two of you would fit way better into a car. I mean I know he's Somalian, but I think you can trust him enough if you're giving him musical suggestions.
So I have a paper due this week and one next week twice as long, but Son Volt is tonight so I guess its all-nighter Wednesday for me. Haven't done one of those since "real college".
I wonder how many people actually connect from the missed connections section of Craigslist.
There was a group of dudes camped near our showers at Coachella that had a sign up that read: WE CHECK THE PALM DESERT MISSED CONNECTIONS SECTION OF CRAIGSLIST!

But other than them, not sure!
It seems if you're willing to advertise you want a connect then there'd be no need for missed connections. That said jenny I know at least one person to get some action off of missed connections. Though that was in Blacksburg where the population was very tiny.

Wow, that's awesome. Sometimes I see postings that are from the gym I go to and I'm dying to know who the people are!
Anyone have any Amsterdam travel suggestions/tips/advice? I'm in the planning stages for a trip right now, and I'd love to hear some first hand knowledge! Hotel recommendations are very welcome, as I know they can be varied in quality.

You would think that, at an office full of people who went to college, you could count on your co-workers to either a) put the seat up before they peed or b) clean up after themselves if a) was beyond their grasp. You would be wrong.
sitting in a 3-hr training session on eligibility screening and storage + handling guidelines for federally-provided vaccines. at my local health department. in a room with 100 women who all have questions.

When I went we stayed in a hostel above an irish pub, and it was amazing. Don't really know if thats something you would be interested in. Other than that I don't really know how much knowledge I have as my trip was rather, um hazy? My method of travel is different than most as I genenerally walk around until I get lost, look up on a map where I am, then walk some more. I find you find alot of interesting places that way and meet cool people cause your forced to ask for directions. If your into tours and stuff take the canal tours with the boats, and also check out the Van Gogh museum and Anne Franks house. Also check out the park (I don't remember the name)near the big Amsterdam sign. Amsterdam is a beautiful city and people overlook that because of corn useage and hookers. Speaking of hookers I would recommomend checking out the red light district at night (even if your not gonna get one, I never did), you WILL see some crazy stuff there.
All in all Amsterdam was a top 3 city for me on my europe trip (Florence, Prauge being the other two), and you will have a good time.
Forgot to mention, depending on how long you are there you might want to take a train somewhere (Rotterdam maybe), just to see the countryside. Holland is a beautiful country with tons of flowers and canals running through the countryside.

Dave, your office posts remind me that I'm not the only one who's office could be The Office (without the comedy, but with all the idiocy). Thank you for that.
Meanwhile, in related news, I got a delightfully passive aggressive post-it note today, on a field book I've been searching for for a week. It simply said, "in the 2012 field file." ...it might as well have said, "you idiot" afterwards. I mean seriously - if I am looking for a field book containing data from an event that took place in October 2012, I believe I would have LOOKED IN THE 2012 FILE. And then I would have looked in ALL the files back to 2008 when the project began. ALL OF THAT PRIOR to me sending out an email requesting that field techs look in their trucks for the missing book. Clearly, it was put back in the 2012 file, instead of brought to my desk as I asked in the inquiring email. BTW post-it-note-writer, THANK YOU SO MUCH for FINDING the missing book a WEEK after I sent the inquiring email. Well done. Really, well done team-player.

Also, mayonaise, to keep you updated, my admin is currently in the midst of a 4 day (dependent on weather) fishing trip that he decided to go on Monday afternoon sometime. We're currently taking bets as to if he is actually using sick time like he joked or just taking vacation.
