Speaking of Jesus, I'm watching The Bible in preparation for The Walking Dead season finale and they are mutilating Jesus. It is disgusting that I'm sure thousands of children are watching this right now. Shouldn't we be learning from our past and not trying to perpetuate it? "His" teachings were great, but so are numerous other identical religious figures who all have the same message (because they are all derived from the same general story). It is crazy that kids need to have nightmares and feel intense guilt for their part in the killing of Jesus. It's a horrible lesson to indoctrinate into children that they are somehow responsible for this man being tortured and killed.
Don't get me wrong, though, it's a good dramatic story. Other great cinematic scenes, such as the execution scene in Braveheart, take a lot of notes from it. But it's not something a child should feel involved in or view.
I totally see where youre coming from on the brutality of it... but I think that was just kinda the whole point. Im sure a lot of kids grow up in sunday school and already know the end of the story, so the crucifixion isnt as real or powerful to them because the already know that there is a happy ending.
Crucifixion was one of the most brutal ways to be executed. If you're to believe that Christ was the son of God then you would have to imagine he knew how brutal his death would be, yet he accepted it because he knew it was the plan. Had he been beheaded or stoned to death, it may not have had the same impact on the Jews/Romans.
I do agree that its unfortunate that many kids who grow up in religious homes have to see these scenes at (most likely) a very early age and (most likely) feel intense guilt about it... but part of the story is that the resurrection was more powerful/important than the crucifixion. As in, he didnt just conquer death, he conquered the most gruesome death possible at that time.
I think watching him brutalized and humiliated made his followers and non-believers alike at the time, doubt whether he was who he claimed to be...only to have him conquer it days later. DRAMA.
EDIT: (Im not trying to be preachy...I just have a lot of questions/doubts and my own issues with Christianity and faith in general, so I enjoyed watching the Bible series with my wife, who is a very strong Christian who grew up in church and in christian school/university. She knew the stories as we watched them like I would know the Star-Wars movies if we watched them together.)
Faith is a personal thing, one that I go back and forth on (and have since high school) but the historical side of the bible is very interesting to me.
I feel you guys - Jesus' crucifixion was intense. I was watching a special on the History channel earlier in the weekend about crucifixion, and it was indeed one of the most brutal ways to go. I think that's really the point though - as Reid says, it had to be awful, and it had to be the WORST it could be; not for impact, but as the Son of God, the Master of the Plan, why would he have it any other way? If you're to believe that Christ was taking on all of the crap of the world, then why would he wuss out and go the easy way? Agreed with reid here too - the crucifixion isn't the highlight - it's the resurrection. If Jesus did not die, and then come back to life, there would be zero foundation for Christianity.
As far as kids watching the series (or any version of Jesus' crucifixion in TV/Movie format) that is certainly a parent's responsibility to gauge if their kids can deal with it. Just like most parents wouldn't let their kids watch Law & Order: SVU bc of the intense murder scenes, I would hope they wouldn't allow their kids to watch a rather accurate depiction of the Crucifixion. The day after the first ep of this series, my cousin said that it was a great representation, but "I wish it was less violent so the kids could watch." Her kids are 9 and 5. The Bible isn't really a kid-friendly book - there were killings, war, blood, death. Just because the subject matter of this show is "The Bible," I hope that grown adults know that doesn't mean it's 10 hours of Jesus walking around and petting lambs and holding small children with a halo around his head. Regarding feeling "guilt" and indoctrinating children to feel responsible for Christs death - I grew up Catholic - PROFESSIONALS at guilt - and never once did I personally feel responsible for Jesus dying on the cross. No one should feel guilt about that, not even the Jews, who have really gotten a bad rep for "killing Jesus." Jesus says, "No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded." John 10: 18 (NLT). There too - I just hope that if my 5 year old or my 9 year old told me they felt guilty that Jesus died, I would know to search in the Word and find the answer to show them they shouldn't feel that way.
I'm def not trying to be preachy either, it was just such a great convo starter from jakicker and response from reid, I wanted to be involved too!

I agree its the parent's responsibility to determine it their kids can handle the brutal scenes. I dont have any kids but Id probably let them view it with me once they were 9-10 yrs old.
I only say that because I grew up going to church as a small child and heard the story a dozen times, but I NEVER understood or comprehended how brutal it actually was until I was in high school and saw The Passion of the Christ. I was floored, and wished I had understood earlier. I spent my childhood believing the story but believing that it was not so violent/gruesome as it certainly was...(probably because the crucifixion was usually covered very briefly but the resurrection was covered more in depth.)
But I think although the resurrection is the most important part of the story, the crucifixion cant be glossed over.
IMO, "Crucifixion" was to show Christ's love... "Resurrection" was to show Christ's power.
I thought the series was really well done. Probably very interesting and entertaining to anyone whether they are a believer or not. Especially the old Testament stuff. Im pretty clueless on that part of history. I had to pause it dozens of times to get confirmation/supplemental info from my wife.

Me too! I thought it was pretty good getting that much history into only 10 hours. And it definitely made me want to go back and get into the old testament and the history of it even more. The History Channel was pretty great all weekend, I watched one show that was an hour about nothing but Saul's fighting with the Philistines over Canaan. They were showing how the armies were approaching from this side or that, and how the Philistines eventually surrounded Saul and took back the land... it was really interesting to see and hear from ancient historian's perspectives.

I hung out with this girl on Friday and she was pretty, cool, nice, etc., etc. a million other reasons I should like her, but I just didn't feel like there was any chemistry. Which bummed me out.

Huh, I'd give her a second try. If you guy's just casually hung out, maybe kick it up a notch. Do something you are more interested in or a little more exciting and see if things click.

Go out with her again, but this time, use every bad habit you have. Whether its snarkyness, binge drinking, self-centered, smoking, overly political, nose-picking, etc...
If she accepts you at your worst...then she is worth a few more dates.
I finally watched "This is 40" last night and it was one of the funniest (as in, I spit out my tea and laughed so hard I couldn't breathe) movies I've seen in a long time. So much I related to.
I'm PO'd at my mom for letting my sister bring home another puppy; they'll just get tired of cleaning up after it in a few months and give it away, just like the last 2.
So I was going through my photobucket account tonight looking for a picture when I came across this. I have no recollection of making it, or even WHY I made it. LOOOL.

So... Im not a huge TV watcher, I watch sports, History, news channels, and record a handful of shows that I can catch on a free night or sunday afternoon. I dont have HBO or Shotime...
But I think Im the only person on earth who hasnt watched a single episode of "Game of Thrones" or "Walking Dead."
I dont have a ton of time for TV (Breaking Bad is my only TRUE appointment viewing series) so which of those 2 series is better, or more worthy of a few weeks of Netflix couch-time?
In college I was into Breaking Bad, the Wire, OZ, Trailer-Park Boys, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Office (to give you an idea of the type of shows I can enjoy and lose dozens of hours of my life to)

You aren't alone big guy, and I assume you're not missing much. TV shows come and go. If I could recommend 1 series, it would be either Dexter or Shameless (becuase making this more difficult for you was the point, right?). I NEVER watch TV, and if my TV is turned on, it's to watch Netflix or a DVD. My buddy slept over at my house and turned on ESPN about 2 months ago, and I still haven't changed the channel haha.

Also, I saw this guy live in my town last week...
It was quite disappointing. 45 minutes tops... He came on stage at 7:30 sharp (understandable, he travels with his 5 kids and wife on tour) and he spent the final 10 minutes doing the same exact Hot Pocket bit. Almost word-for-word.
I understand that's what he is most known for...but comedy is different from music. Im fine with a band playing a few of their hits at every single show (especially if it's 2+ hours of other material) but something about hearing the same joke over and over just isn't funny.
Anyways... Dave Cheppelle rolled thru here a few months back and killed it. He came on 2 hours late but it was well worth it.
Question: Why isn't your inforoo handle Colorado Ron or cr*************? Why "canexplain" instead?
I have only had two screen names KKYBast (kill kenny you basterds ) and canexplain. I wanted to be can T explain, but back in the day, that name was to long for AOL. So it goes. I remember when they used to promote clear, concise, SHORT, url names. Today they are like www.whatareyoudoingtodaybecauseiamboredandhave cr****
