Not sure what it is about today, but i really really really really really want to be back at bonnaroo. Like have just been sitting at work watching bonnaroo365 most of the day.
We had a swim test and a PE requirement at my University. They were strict about it too. People did not graduate if they did not complete it, even with a 4.0. It was abolished a few years after I left, which was a sad day.
I am always shocked by how many people do not know how to swim or live a (semi) healthy lifestyle. Not saying that it is more important than what you learn in class, but I learned a whole hell of a lot more outside of class than I did inside of class. It should all be part of the experience, even PE. And Holls, for reference, I studied Chaucer AND French. I can still speak French enough to get by most place, except in Paris, where the people suck.

some dimwitted moron who dared to suggest that P.E. courses are far more important than English or foreign languages. "Let's get rid of Chaucer and French. AYFKM?!?
Don't you work at a university?
The obesity problem should be focused on when kids are young, not when they're 18 years old and already possibly obese, or set in their ways. It's not hard at all to get a little kid to think certain ways, it's almost impossible to change the way your typical 18 year old thinks. [/quote]
EXACTLY MY POINT! While I certainly agree that physical fitness is important, I was appalled that dude thinks we should eliminate key pillars of cerebral fitness. You can teach a kid healthy habits in elementary school; you can also teach them a foreign language. But you shouldn't teach Chaucer (esp. The Miller's Tale!) to third-graders. Oh sure, you CAN, but that ribald humor might not go over well w/the parents! And the last thing a school needs is to have seeds of mischief planted in the minds of little boys who decide they want to act out the scene w/Nicholas & the hot poker up the...
That dude is today's Bonehead du Jour winner. Yesterday's award went to some dimwitted moron who dared to suggest - in a faculty meeting where half the attendees were PhDs from the College of Arts & Sciences - that P.E. courses are far more important than English or foreign languages. "Let's get rid of Chaucer and French. We should focus on the obesity epidemic that's shortening the lives of our youth." AYFKM?!?

I promise I'm not trying to overkill this, but the "butt-chugging" story I shared last night has gone international. It made into the Daily Mail in the UK today.
No quackin' lie: dude took Computer Programming instead of an ACTUAL foreign language like German or Spanish! His explanation? "Because that's considered a foreign 'language' in Alabama." (I won't name the school, but let's just say...it's the biggest one in the state.)
Because I'm a bit of a skeptic (nothing personal Holls), I checked this out.
"Each student completes one of the following options: a. Six semester hours in courses that are approved for the computer (C) designation. Such courses assume a working knowledge of the computer. b. Two semesters or the equivalent in one foreign language (FL). Students must earn grades of “C-” or higher in the first course of the two-semester sequence before enrolling in the second course."

Some Enginerd professors must've lobbied for that. When I was at Illinois, Engineering majors only required 2 years of high school foreign language in order to take none in college.
^ Just TWO MEASLY SEMESTERS for B.S. majors...that's the same for us. Some of our B.S. majors don't have to take ANY foreign language, unlike B.A. majors, who must have 14 hours. Cryin' shame, I tell ya!
Kudos for checking. I was too busy laughing at the guy for trying to switch courses this far into the semester. He claimed Spanish was just "too hard" and he'd rather take some extra programming courses... waaaaaaah.

Perhaps Alabama's willingness to consider computer programming a foreign language contributed to the collective attitude that allowed the non-tolerant and abusive policies the state has implemented toward immigrants. Foreign languages not only increase our appreciation of the complexities and nuances of our own language, they also foster greater cultural awareness that empowers us to not fear the "otherness" of people that are not like us.

^ THIS. Quoted for eloquent, truthy awesomeness!!!

So I get back from DeLuna fest today and I'm having the vacation, live music hangover blues when what arrives in my mail? MMJ tickets to the Port Chester shows! Vfest tickets are on their way too.
It's so quacking funny- you know you have a live music addiction and need help when you return from one festival and already have tickets arriving in the mail that very same day :-) I blame all of you for this addiction, inforoo has caused this, you're all too informative and enthusiastic and lead me into temptations. Bad people. Thank you!
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
"Here a dog tries to use the Sicilian Defense against a Queen's Pawn Opening."
Stupid Dog! Everyone knows the only acceptable defense against D4 is QGD (1 d4 d5, 2 c4 e6, 3 Nc3 Nf6, 4 Bg5 Be7, 5 Nf3)
From there I used to prefer the Lasker Variant (5...0-0, 6 e3 h6, 7 Bh4 Ne4, 8 Bxe7 Qxe7), but then I got smart and started using the Bondarsky System (5...h6, 6 Bh4 0-0, 7 e3 b6)
Stuck at home today with a horrid sinus infection-thing.
DUDE. my nose is rebelling against me too. I didnt go to workout this morning bc I wouldnt be able to breathe. I hope it doesnt get bad. Im drinking Emergen-Cs like it's my job.

Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
You do not want to open this can of worms. Dog people are just as nuts as cat people.
An argument with only two choices? I think Inforoo knows how to settle this....
I really do not think you want to do this. The waffles better than pancake thread got heated. This will get downright nasty. Plus, we already know dogs are the far superior option.
