I don't know if I've ever felt as out of touch with the youths as right now.
I was listening to On Point on NPR last night (clue #1 I'm out of touch with them!), and they were talking about the future of media subscriptions (Youtube Red, Netflix, etc).
How and why is someone called PewDiePie the most popular thing on Youtube? I watched maybe 5-10 mins of his videos I just don't get it.
I don't know anything about him. I was at a wedding recently and these kids kept following me around with pokemon cards and talking about minecraft incessantly. They told me I remind them of pewdiepie. They kept saying that in fact. One of them also said he wished I was his dad.
I don't' get the whole phenomenon of "watching someone else play video games" either. But it's HUGE. South Park did an awesome episode all about it and featured PewDiePie and made the commentary about how "grandpas" actually play video games.
I guess it has more to do with young people always having a screen in front of them (computers at home/school, tablets and phones when away from computers) and the youtube generation of watching everyone do everything (I'm still shocked at how many/how popular unboxing videos are) just making this into a thing.
I was talking to a co-worker about Last of Us and he asked if I got up to a certain part. I said yea and started talking about how frustrating one part was and he was like "Oh, I haven't played the game yet....I've just watched someone playthrough it". I don't think I'd enjoy watching a few hours worth of someone else playing it. The thing with pewdiepie is he's at least "funny" and makes jokes throughout...like a running commentary.
I can understand unboxing videos to an extent. When researching a new product, it's often not a bad way to see some good close ups of the product/have questions answered/get a feel for it/etc. I've watched unboxing videos of some of my larger purchases recently. But do people watch them for products they're not considering buying?
Watching someone play a video game is absolutely crazy to me. I remember I had a co-worker back in '09 that was into that, no idea it had gotten this large. Why not play the game yourself?
Idk, I guess I'm officially old.
I think a lot of people watch it if they need see a walk through of a tough level, if the game has not been released and they want to see what the game play footage looks like, or if it has funny commentary like PewDiePie or Tobuscus.

I'm more talking about how everybody and their mom does unboxing videos now. Like, not just respected channels or ones who put out quality content but like some kid with a crappy camera mumbling while opening something up. It's just like a thing that everyday people do and I never got into it. Haven't watched some and had the desire to make my own.
I've also used unboxing videos in the past when spending a lot of money on a specific item. There are great ones out there. But there's a lot about the youtube culture that I just don't get. I was searching for Key and Peele videos the other day and found some kid with like 40 views who put a webcam on him while he had in headphones and watched key and peele sketches. The whole point was his "reaction" to the sketches and the whole thing felt fake/forced. Like he's laughing and not really adding anything to the video.
And holy shit....I tried to find the one that I was talking about and apparently there are TONS of reaction videos for key and peele sketches. Just people with a camera on their face laughing at a comedy show. WTF

That makes sense to me. But I have co-workers who just watch it for fun without intention of even playing the game. I don't get it.
And Jaz, I like your avatar, don't listen to the others! I'm just curious of its origins though.
The original was just a black and white still of the girl holding the owl, but someone on reddit decided to make it ridiculous. I'm generally a fan of ridiculous.

As a parent of a 17 yr old, I get the watching video games thing. I do it all the time. Usually not by choice, but because the man-child is on the PS3 that lives in the living room. I have bought the house a PS4 for Christmas, and the man-child will get the PS3 in his room, so my video game watching vs. playing will most definitely change. I do play games too, but some are only single player, or we are taking turns. Sometimes I enjoy watching Kyle kill 'em all...plus when I was a kid, I had 4 siblings so you had to wait your turn, or until someone died, and I grew up watching video games. That doesn't seem weird to me.
I also watch the unboxing (my boyfriend even more so), I like knowing about the product that I considering buying. I am a weirdo.
The only time I've benefited from watching unboxing videos is when I'm really curious about the box, so really only for videos of large speakers or subwoofers. Always interesting to me how they package those and what the best method to get them out is when they arrive, especially if they weigh close to 100 pounds.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the whole unboxing thing start with Apple products? Mainly because they were the first manufacturer to use really cool packaging. Opening the package for a new MacBook used to be a unique experience, but now everyone has cool packaging that makes you feel like you are joining a special club when you open it.

Watching someone else play a video game in the same room as you is very different than watching some stranger on Youtube play it. Watching someone else in the room is normal to me. Like you said, not everyone can always play at the same time. And you're still socializing with the person as they're playing.

Oh, I didn't realize that we were talking about people watching people on youtube. My kid does that for levels he can't beat, but nobody does that in my house. Kyle doesn't even like to watch the cheats, only does it if he is stuck for longer than 4 days.

Also, I just saw that the sale price for the Miley Cyrus show playing in Philly is $69.69. Seriously, Miley? I expect a certain amount of immaturity from her, but that's just cringe level. I'm pretty sure I was over the risque nature of that number by the time I hit high school.

Is it $69.69 before or after tax? That's what determines whether or not it's funny. Because if she had them do the math to figure out what the price had to be for it to total 69.69, then that is just comical.

I was talking about this the other week. The boys love these kind of videos. Their favorite seems to be some Scottish guy who yells all the time. Pewdiepie did make an ass ton of money, but if it makes you feel any better, he comes off as a really legit guy in interviews and he donated a bunch of money to charity.

I expect much of the crowd to be in high school. And or really immature.
Speaking of being kicked in the nuts, guys, how much money would it take to let someone give you one clean, solid kick right in the nuts? Legs spread, standing, boom, kick to the nuts.
my heart is heavy and I am hurting right now. My best friend of 42 years has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Information is still coming in but it is a large tumor with lymph node involvement. There will likely be chemo and radiation before surgery due to the size of the tumor. She and I have been through so much together and I am going to have to stand by her as she battles this.
Why is this relevant to Inforoo? Because she lives in Nashville and there is a good possibility that I will be flying up there for some visits over the next few months. Her husband has already offered to fly me up when she wants to see me or when I am needed. Also she has already told me that she will need corn-based medicinals for side effects. I am not going to come to Nashville and not see any of you up there. Period.

It depends. If I can be hypothetically guaranteed that there will be no long-lasting damage (no ruptured testes or swelling for days or anything like that), probably a few grand. That probably seems low, but it's just pain, and pain passes. I've dealt with worse and I surely will deal with worse at some point in my life, so I might as well get paid for it.
Ideal amount would be the amount of my student loan debt. It's fairly similar to a kick in the nads, except it lasts for decades.

Kim, I'm so sorry. My thoughts are with you and your friend.

I'm so sorry she is going through this. We have an extra bed if you need a place to crash! And I would love to see you if you have time when you visit!

What JHOinTN said. I know most of your time will be for her, but if you need a respite, would love to visit and take your mind off of the troubles.
The wife and I are going to Chicago over thanksgiving, flying up that Wednesday and flying back that Saturday. Its our first time in Chicago (well I went once for an audio convention but barely left the hotel so that doesn't count) and we are super excited. We've already got some standard touristy stuff planned, generally this is what our itinerary looks like:
Wednesday - Arrive about 4pm, catch train to our hotel, which is near the river, kind of between mag mile and navy pier. No idea what we are doing this night.
Thursday - Thanksgiving yay. We are talking about trying to go to the parade, I have NO idea what this entails. I know where it is. Just be cool to go to one of those parades I've been watching on TV since I was a kid. This evening we bought tickets for Second City, was stoked they have a thanksgiving show. Inbetween those two things I have no idea, probably Millennium Park or other outdoor sightseeing we can do on a Holiday.
Friday - Art Institute first thing probably. Blue man group tickets at night.
Saturday - Plane doesn't leave until 5pm, so we'll have a little bit of time if there is some last thing we want to fit in.
Anywho if anyone has any food recommendations or other recommendations please let me know! Nothing too fancy on the food, I'm not packing anything but jeans. Usually I plan these things for months but we just decided on this and booked the flight/hotel yesterday.
So the music they play at my gym is terrible. As in my friends and I always wonder how someone can find so many awful songs to play in a row. Needless to say you either need headphones or an intense fascination with the sound of lifting weights.
Yesterday I was on the treadmill listening to Fuzz. Obviously I got super into and wound up running SUPER hard with the album blasting in my ear. With 20 minutes left I accidentally whacked my headphone wire and my phone went flying. My earbuds were ripped out of my ear and I was suddenly accosted with the sound of THE MACARENA. What the fuck, gym? Why are you playing that song? Where is the demand for that?
Also I get super into my runs so I couldn't bring myself to hop off the treadmill to retrieve my phone. So I had to spend the last 20 minutes focusing on the muted TV in front of me. I am not exaggerating at all when I say it was one of the worst things that has ever happened.

I actually need more Macarena in my life. It will certainly be played at my wedding. I love line dances though; I impressed all the bridesmaids at the last wedding I was in by teaching everyone The Wobble.

As long as you don't push your line dancing agenda on unsuspecting exercisers then we're good.
I always do all the line dances at weddings. Not because I want to nor that I enjoy it on any real level, but I enjoy being the oddball the dance floor. I like trying to make others feel comfortable to come up and have fun with me. I am a good person to invite to your wedding because I have no problem being the first/only person on it.
EDIT: I should note that I have no dance moves whatsoever, so I can't say I am looking good as the only person on the dance floor. Just that I don't mind it
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
