Yea, it's kind of a big deal that posts are being edited by moderators on the board.
They're not being edited. I'm not changing what's being said. I'm just removing the code that is put in to bypass the filter.
Right, but we don't get to see what it is that you changed. Obviously, we know you and trust that you didn't change the content, but all we see is the post and that it was edited by someone else. There is a kind of personal expression and privacy issue here.
That said, I do agree with CKS that the easiest way is not to type around the filter. At this point, I'm just throwing an asterisk in there when I curse so as to not get it changed to "quack" or "summers breeze in a sac". I hope that's acceptable to mods.
What is silly and makes poeple look bad is when people actually have to put more effort into a post, than just typing it out, just for their curse words to show up. I mean, really? Is it really that important for your curse words to show up? Is it really that big of a deal?
The people on here that know me IRL know that I have the mouth of a sailor. About every third or fourth word out of my mouth is a curse word. But I am not going to go out of my, while typing on a forum, to make sure that curse words show up. To me that is just ridiculous and when people cry about their curse words being filtered, I just tend to think those people got bigger issues in their life than a silly word filter on a message board.
My 0.02c
I'm not arguing for either side of this, but I would like to point out that the words that replace the curse words are nonsensical and make the post look a little dumber. I've never understood why they aren't just replaced with f***, s***, etc. Just saying.
That's a possibility. Can be posted in the "We want to hear from you" thread and see if others want that change.

I'll grant you that. I think maybe it's just us being silly and trying to keep things light
If having lots of ***s would appease people working around the filter, I don't think it would be a problem for us to change it. Although at the same time, you can type out as many self edited *** words as you want.
I think the silly words are funny personally. I mean sure when you say fuck it is not very gangsta, but funny.

To be honest....I was going to put in a line that said "Edited by ITM: Removed word filter bypass" or something like that. I am not sure if that would have really made a big difference though. Seems like some people are upset about having a word filter and not so much that I took the workaround out.

When you intentionally break a rule your rights to privacy and personal expression become quite a but more restricted.
There will always be things you or anybody else does not like. I never had a problem with the filters myself. I just do not understand why people have such a need to see or type curse words? I have nothing against them myself but the filter was put in place for a reason. Bypassing it on purpose is not acceptable, it is a rule and we would hope users will respect that. It makes the board look bad? I respect your opinion but I fail to see how it makes us look bad. I think more people laugh about it, more than anything. I just fail to see why this a big enough issue to have a huge discussion about it?
It's not the filters really, it's that a mod is editing posts that aren't theirs.
Okay so if someone breaks a rule by going past the word filters how should we deal with it? What would be better. Trying to learn here.

I personally don't need you to have a specific line for that. I trust you. I'm just pointing out where the privacy/personal expression issue might be for people.

You can please none of the people none of the time, some of the people none of the time, and all of the people none of the time....
Regardless of what we do, there will always be crying and complaining over one thing or another.

I'm with rosko on this one. It's really just the fact that I look like an idiot when I say, "I quacking love this band" or "I think this band is the poop"
For a bunch of counter-culture, faux-hippie, free-love, "down with the man" armchair revolutionaries such as yourselves, this is a sad display. No wonder you're all Democrats.

I don't know, pm them?
I like the idea about changing the filters to f**k etc, still gets the word across.
Sounds good.
So how does this sound:
1.) We take into consideration the changing of "silly words" to "f**k and "sh*t" and stuff like that. I like the idea but will have to run it by everyone. I'll push for it if it will limit/end the amount of people bypassing the filter.
2.) If I see someone bypass the filter, I'll send a PM. Letting them know they broke a rule and not to do it again.
3.) If they do it again, they get a warning level raised.
4.) If they do keep doing it....it will have to be edited and I'll leave a reason why.
Anything else? If you got suggestions I'm all ears.
It sounds like we've reached a democratic agreement on asterisks...I'm proud of this board right now
There's only like a dozen of us discussing this. Plenty of people will also be complaining "What happened to all the silly words?" if the change happens lol

I dunno, the F-word is just the best word in the entire English language. I feel we're doing our own dialect a disservice by eliminating the use of the most versatile and emphatic word in the English language like this.

I'm so glad you posted this. I'm going to use it all the freaking time, especially whenever anyone complains about security at Bonnaroo.
Also, Jess is a secret Republican! Who knew?
Actually to be fair I have always backed you up there. I am not really a republican, but I have always felt that rules are there to make you think before you break them. Once you decide to break a rule you need to be prepared for the consequences of doing so. Flaunting the fact you are breaking rules in authority's face may win you several points on style, but you lose a lot more for lack of common sense.

I agree that all this sounds like the best course of action.

It's just a great f***in' word.
You know that Omar didn't curse in The Wire, right?

Those people can kiss my motherf*cking ass.
Of course here is the real issue with doing this, as brilliantly illustrated by my colleague. If people are self editing they are going to do things like this which will kill the intent. Maybe we should say all asterisks except for the first letter of each word.

Also, is Juggs really a republican or a joke republican? For whatever reason, I always assumed he was liberal.
He's seems like a person who uses his brain and agrees with both groups on a few different issues and doesn't force himself to one side on every issue just to fit in with a label.
edit: that sounded kind of mean towards you rosko, didn't mean it that way. I just hate when people are die hard "liberal" or "conservative," kind of a peeve of mine.
