I hope you don't actually think that figure has anything to do with how big a band is.
i don't think it has anything to do with where a band is listed on a festival lineup poster or a top albums list, but yes album sales mean more people buying and more people listening and more people knowing of this band which means.. yes.. bigger.
Your logic works so well: The Suburbs - 156000 first week ~ Arcade Fire billed 2nd Rolling Papers - 191177 first week ~ Wiz Khalifa billed 42nd
wow!, i honestly didn't know that, i like nirvana much much more... but i the chillies have more albums... so i guess it make sense
I agree that RHCP is more recognizable to the larger populous, but to the bonnaroo crowd who is (generally) somewhat musically conscious, Radiohead is more liked and distinguished than RHCP. You have to pander to your audience.
I didn't even realize RHCP had sold 70 million records. Good God.
This.
RHCP is larger commercially, I'd say, but the crowd at Bonnaroo will be more into Radiohead (although I do think some Radiohead fans vastly overstate their importance).
And going by #1 hits and album sales is pointless in the long run. Phish couldn't get a #1 hit if they tried and they're arguably one of the biggest draws Bonnaroo has ever had.

I think you're giving too much credit to the bonnaroo crowd. Ask everyone on this board which band they heard random people talking up the most in 2010 (Hint: it was probably KOL)
so, more people will be excited for RHCP than Radiohead? I don't believe so. KoL was also carrying in a huge amount of buzz that RHCP hasn't seen in years.

Looking back at the 09 line-up, I think there is still room, yes, for another "big name" whoever that big name may be on the bill this year. NIN, Beasties, and Snoop WITH Phish and Bruce that year. IMO, RHCP are on par with NIN as far as popularity goes.
