Just go look at Coach's 2010 lineup. Most stacked lineup they ever had, or will ever have. MGMT, Phoenix, and Vamp Weekend all like 4th on their own day. Crazy. Throw in Gorillaz and Pavement and there u go.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
I think part of the problem might be that Roo fans are frustrated/jealous that Coachella consistently books better headliners. Check out the "competition" the last 5 years:
2011 - Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire, Kanye West VS Eminem, Arcade Fire, Widespread panic 2010 - Jay-Z, Muse, Gorillaz VS Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Kings of Leon 2009 - Paul McCartney, The Killers, the Cure VS Bruce Springsteen, Phish, Beastie Boys/David Byrne 2008 - Jack Johnson, Portishead, Roger Waters VS Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson 2007 - Bjork, RHCP, RATM VS The Police, Tool, Widespread Panic 2006 - Depeche Mode, Tool VS Radiohead, Tom Petty, Phil Lesh
2006 is a blowout in Roo's favor.
2007 is a wash.
2008 is a wash.
2009 is debatable (I'd prefer Coach).
In 2010 Jay-Z was at Roo, just not a headliner. Lawyered.
Last year Kanye pushes Coach past.
Not exactly a curb-stomping by Coachella when it comes to headliners.
Well I agree mostly, but Coach 2008 had Prince. Definitely a Coachella win.
So you're saying if someone saw that Neil Young was on the lineup again in a different form, they still wouldn't go because he just played the year before, albeit different songs and totally different band. Makes sense. I could see how people don't want to see Neil Young with the Crazy Horse or if they did another rendition of Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Nah, nobody wants to see that.
That's not what I'm saying at all. Personally, I would love to see Neil back in any form, and I'm sure most of the people that post on here would. But people like us here on Inforoo aren't in the majority of those who go to Bonnaroo, who tend to be more casual fans of music. The selling point is the biggest names, and I think if those casual music fans that make up the majority had a chance to see Neil Young and the Black Keys again versus whatever Coachella, Lolla, ACL or some other festival puts out, they're gonna go with another festival because they want to see something different.
Top 6 from previous 6 years:
2011 - Eminem, Arcade Fire, Panic, Black Keys, Buffalo Springfield, My Morning Jacket
2010 - DMB, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z, Tenacious D, Weezer
2009 - The Boss, Phish, Beastie Boys, NIN, David Byrne, Wilco
2008 - Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Panic, Kanye, Robert Plant (not counting Chris Rock who came before Plant)
2007 - Police, Tool, Panic, White Stripes, Ben Harper, Wilco
2006 - Radiohead, Tom Petty, Phil Lesh, Elvis Costello, Beck, Oysterhead
The only ones that repeat are Panic and Wilco. Again, because Panic is a jamband, that's a different scenario than someone more mainstream or classic. My thoughts as to why they book a jamband on Sunday night is, not just because a noticeable amount of people have started leaving by that time and just aren't into those kinds of bands, but I think they might do it also to start getting people out of there, to sort of ease the traffic flow late Sunday night/early Monday morning.
Here's where your argument falls apart though (IMO).
2006 had Oysterhead which is a special "get" and a pretty big name act but not a headliner. The same could be said for Buffalo Springfield (special "get", pretty big name act, not a headliner) in 2011.
In 2007, The Police headlined. Guess what....the drummer from The Police is also the drummer of Oysterhead. So what happened here is that he was brought back (repeat) with the act that he is primarily known for (The Police) to headline.
I think the same could happen with Neil Young and Crazy Horse (which is arguably more popular/bigger than Buffalo Springfield).

I've also noticed none of these bands have members who are also members of another headliner statused band: ie Neil Young & CH; Buffalo Springfield; CSNY.
You could make an argument for Sting & Bruce Springsteen Seeger Sessions, but doubt either headlines. Puscifer won't headline. Atoms for Peace won't headline. Eddie Vedder solo won't headline, but Soundgarden could. Only other band that could possibly be back is Watch the Throne, so there you have it: one other artist you've mentioned: Jay-Z, and there's a possible chance of him playing again.

I agree it sort of looks funny when they're up there and about 50 feet away from each other to fill out the stage better, but the sound was not lacking at their set last year, just a couple more songs to make it longer than it ended up being.
i don't know man, i was there too and was pretty disappointed. maybe i was just really excited for buffalo springfield, but i really expected a much louder and more raucous show. didn't help that dan auerbach looked like a summers breeze with his hair jelled up. sorry, i won't say anything else against them because i generally like them
my friends and i agree...we were/are still huge fans of the black keys but something about them on the main stage just wasn't doing it. I'm still excited to see them live this march and hear the new songs. I'm sure we won't see them on the farm though.

anyone have Dispatch on their mock schedules? any evidence or speculation for a yes or no from them? they are pretty big and i could see them sliding in there somewhere...

I'd probably choose the Bonnaroo headliners over all of Coachellas except '11 and '10.
Friday: Dan Auerbach & the Fast Five Saturday: Monsters of Folk Sunday: Phish
Neither Black Keys or MMJ officially headlined last year so that means there's a possibility Auerbach and Jim James can return but in different capacities. I wanna jump on that Crazy "Horse" Train, but I just don't see Neil being back this year. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes.

I don't think many are saying it's likely....I know I was just arguing the fact that it wouldn't happen because he was there last year. They've shown in the past that it hasn't been an issue.
Your "mock" with Dan Auerbach and Monsters of Folk doesn't really change anything.

It's all personal opinion really. I would take Coachella's every single year except for 2006 which doesnt even count cause Coach was 2 nights then. Coachellas headliners pretty much shit on Bonnaroos year in and year out IMO. Its the undercard that makes Roo great

Alright, from Insider's first posts, especially the "2 out of 3" I feel like she was referring to several mockups that predicted Foo - RHCP - Phish. So I am predicting no Foo Fighters at the Farm, i'm also predicting that The Beach Boys will also NOT be at the farm, this based on the two out of three and the At Least One of those are correct which clearly meant RHCP.
So can we count out any form of Les Claypool then?
As headliner? I'd say yea.
I was thinking about how they book bands and then turn around and book members of bands. Just because Buffalo was there one year doesn't mean NY&CH are knocked out.
Will they be there? Doubtful but not because he played last year with Buffalo though.

I now predict the Killers for Friday.
I was with you up until The Killers. IMO The Killers are a lot like RHCP but with way less good albums before they went to crap. I think they could pull a Beastie Boys slot or maybe the Strokes from last year, but I have a hard time believing the top 3 would be
Really, thats the best we can hope for. I mean come on. Roger Waters? The Cure? Paul McCartney? I'll happily eat my words, but the 2012 headliners aren't going to blow anybody away.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
I need to watch "The Wire" maybe they will have a marathon in the Cinema Tent.
At 5 seasons, that would take like half of Roo if it was shown 24 hours a day. That being said, it would create a conflict for me for the entire time it was on.

Alright so "At Least ONE of Radiohead/RHCP/Foo Fighters/Beach Boys" has been determined. We get RHCP and Foo Fighters is a no go, just because of the similarity of the two bands.
That still leaves pretty good odds for Radiohead OR Beach Boys at least. Seriously, if the top 3 are RHCP/Phish/Killers the undercard will have to be staaaacked for me not to consider skipping this year.
