Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
The only reason I feel like Phish will get something different/more than the Sunday closer status is that the whole rumor I heard was that BOnnaroo will be instead of a Phestival. IF that is what is going on I think we will see them around quite a bit, even if they are just playing on the back of a flatbed driving around the campsites.

I don't agree with this, tbh. At least it's not anymore of a "testing ground" for Roo than Roo is a testing ground for OSL.
Looking at the past two years they have gotten a headliner that went to Bonnaroo the next. I was thinking it was Muse this year. I was wrong.
The only OSL headliners that had not already played bonnaroo were Muse, The Strokes, and Furthur (and counting Furthur is kind of being picky). The fest has multiple large headliners each year, and there's only so many out on the market, obviously there's going to be a lot of overlap, but I don't think OSL has ever been a situation of them saying "lets do this to see if it will work at roo!". Sure, maybe an act has wowed them enough to make them want to book them at Roo (just like Roo acts may get booked for OSL after the fact) but OSL is it's own massive brand, they aren't using it as a labatory. And plus, the fests are massively different, despite having similar lineups, just because something would work at OSL doesn't mean it would work at Roo, so why bother testing it?
All that needless rambling aside, I do agree two back to back Phish sets makes sense.

I could see a surprise set happening, for sure. But Bonnaroo is Bonnaroo, it has it's own strong identity and image at this point, there's no need to let any band take it over for the weekend, even Phish. So no, this year will not be a Phestival.

I'm pretty sure Jess meant that since Phish won't be having their own festival in 2012, he thinks Bonnaroo will be their big event and thus they'll get more than one set.
I dont know why everyone assumes Phish will get 2 sets if they do indeed play Roo this year. It has been done before which i think makes it less likely to happen again. IMO having Phish play 2 sets does not stand out anymore than 1 set to about 80% of potential ticket buyers. I think if Roo wants Phish to put on a legendary show then Phish should play one 4 hour LN night set on Friday.
Foo Fighters (8:00-9:30) > Phish (10:00-2:00am)
This would probably have Phish listed 4th on the lineup which a lot of you probably think is absurd. But Jay-Z was 4th on a weak 2010 lineup. I mean you could argue that Jay-Z could have been 1st or 2nd. It just came down to when he played his set. IMO I still look at Jay as the headliner that night and it felt more like a headliner than Stevie. Plus if Phish does play the LN set the lineup would probably be stacked.
Something like: Radiohead * Foo Fighters * My Morning Jacket * Phish * The Beach Boys.... or sub Paul Simon in for MMJ. I put MMJ cause thats what I want

Testing was kindasorta tongue-in-cheek. Due to the amount of crossovers and the fact that Superfly is a promoter it's pretty obvious that that book bands to play both festivals (does C3 do this as well with Lolla and ACL? I really don't know.)
It's strange to me that you can count on one headliner from OSL for the next Bonnaroo.

And this logic has just made no sense to me. Why is Phish special, it's not like they're the biggest band in the world. Bonnaroo is the "big event" for a lot of bands, even headliners. It was the "big event" for Stevie Wonder, he only played one show. It was the "big event" for Widespread last year, I didn't see them playing anywhere else
Just cause it's Jess's favorite band and they've done two shows in the past doesn't mean they're gonna get two shows.
Is it possible that Phish and Furthur will both be there? Someone to play the sat night LN set (Phish) and Someone to play the Sunday Closer (Furthur)?
Or is that too much Jam? (although SCI and Widespread last year...)

Friday: What- The Racontuers (7:30-9:00) > Foo Fighters (10:00-12:00) Which: The Head and the Heart (6:00-7:15) > Paul Simon (8:15-10)> The Roots and Friends LN
Saturday: What- The Beach Boys (8:30-10:30) > Radiohead (11:30-2:00) LN Which: The Black Lips (6:00- 7:00) > Black Star (8:15-9:30) > Sweedish House Mafia (12:00- 3:00)
Sunday:What: Phish 6:30-10 Which: The Shins (6:30-8)
I'm pretty sure you see a lot of the same acts at OSL and Roo because they sign deals to play both. Like when Pearl Jam played Roo in '08, OSL in '09, and Jazz Fest in '10. I'm pretty sure they probably signed a deal in 08 to play all three.

When Phish was booked in 09 they were second on the line up, I don't think that Bonnaroo would "demote" them from 2 to 4 on the line up so I think if they are on there, they will stay top three.
I think it is a better business decision for Bonnaroo to book Phish for two shows because I'm sure a lot of the Phans will go back to the whole "screw bonnaroo mtv bought them out, kanye sucks blah blah" shit and not want to travel to Bonnaroo for one show. However if you book them for two sets, or publicly announce that there will be Phish sit ins all over, it will increase your chances of the people that would typically go to a three night run in some other city. Plus if Phish has their, say, two sets you can also count on some other "jam band" to be there to entertain you on Phish's night off.
Also, if it seems that Phish is booked I would say that Radiohead is completely out. Why spend more money than you have to. Say the capacity is 100k. If you have 30k going regardless, 15k going for Phish, you're nearly half way to sold out status. If you put a couple other big names on there, say RHCP, Foo, Deadmau5 I think it will push you up to the capacity. So, why spend all this money on a band like Radiohead when you know Phish will do it for you anyway. Granted, I don't know how much either cost to book, but I can't see a Radiohead fan in Colorado making the trip to Bonnaroo as I can see a Phish fan. Plus wasn't one of the Superfly guys quoted on saying he always likes to spend less? It was in NoD signature for a while....
Jazz Fest has nothing to do with Bonnaroo, actually. Superfly books bands in between the weekends but that's it. They, like the rest of the city, have nothing to do with the festival itself. It's owned by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and booked by Festival Productions, Inc (AKA George Wein the guy who owns the Newport Jazz and Newport Folk franchises).
Phish makes sense for 2 sets. Both headliner and LN What. The "silent partner" is the MGMT for the band. I'm sure there is some contractual obligation for them to continue them booking headliners from Red Light (See: Dave Matthews) time to time. Having Phish play is an homage to the Bonnaroo of past. Without those festivals Bonnaroo would have never existed. No ferris wheel. No Watchtower. No Bobbleheads. It would have been homogenized long before 2010.
Phish isn't special in comparrison to everyother band in the world but they ARE special to Bonnaroo (which is what we're talking about amiright?) Three little words, people. Suck. it. the. quack. up. OK. Fine. 5 words.

I think Bonnaroo would book both Radiohead and Phish, Frank. That would definitely sell it out. Springsteen had to be an expensive act in '09. He brought a huge fan base along, the place was swarming with people from New Jersey. The great thing about that year was how uncrowded it was . I expect to be shoulder to shoulder this coming year. The way their tour schedule is set up it just seems like Radiohead is going to be at both Coachella and Bonnaroo.

I'm just going to pretend to be hearing Radiohead in Phish's spot from now on.
"I can't wait for (Radiohead's) crunchy two sets this weekend." "So happy that (Radiohead) is back playing the festival, they're really special to Bonnaroo." "Do you guys think that (Radiohead) will bust out their (Subterranean Homesick Alien) 30 minute jam?"
Phish has played Roo one time. What makes them some Bonnaroo gods that shaped the festival? They are a great band and they were great in 2009. Why have the exact same festival 3 years later? I think it would be better for Roo to switch it up a bit. One 4 hour set gives basically the same amount of stage time without repeating what they have already done and would cost less.

Aug 2 - Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Aug 23-24 - FYF Fest
Sept 17 - The Breeders
Sept 22 - Lykke Li
Oct 6 - Ought
If you look at past line ups figure out how many years there wasn't a Phish related band playing. Only one and that was because they wern't any members wasn't touring.
Phish "broke up" before Bonnaroo existed. Superfly was there at several of the Phish festivals figuring logistics for a 3 day camping festival. It really is part Phish festivals/part Glastonbury.
I'm sorry if this is coming off harsh .. I'm trying to type on a phone.

this is me (sans the roo has sold out sentiment). Since Phish came back my summers have revolved around Phish tour. This summer will be no different. Typically I travel up to 15 hours catching shows along the way (for example, leave mobile, al for atlanta shows > NC shows > VA shows) so it would actually be nice to just drive the seven hours to Roo. I would be much more likely to do Roo in lieu of Phish tour if Phish is playing two sets instead of one.
I haven't been to Roo since the third year, and would love to make my return. Honestly I still regret not hitting 09, as NIN is another top 5 favorite band for me. would have been thrilling to see Phish and NIN at the same fest!
