anybody see the quote on Bonnaroo facebook?
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality" John Lennon Quote
Maybe Paul is playing roo this year?
I know I'm thinking real big here, but I'm sure Bonnaroo wants to get The Rolling Stones, and with the band touring next year ( I know it hasn't been announced, but its happening) I just know Bonnaroo will get The Rolling Stones. Glastonbury is not having a festival this year, and I feel like Glastonbury would get The Rolling Stones before Bonnaroo could.......
So maybe The Rolling Stones headline saturday (Same as the Stevie slot in 2010), and paul mccartney closing the festival on sunday.
Well I think the lack of quality on this last record directly stems from a lack of Frusciante
I don't think so. I thought the new album might have been a little better than Stadium, possibly because it was shorter. Neither was spectacular, but neither was that bad either.
I'm pretty confident they would put on a very good performance at Roo.
Also surprised at the amount of chili peppers hate.... Californication was a defining album in my development.
I never liked the amount of RHCP hate on here either. I do understand the basis, though.
1. Frusciante leaving does suck. He's an amazing guitarist who was integral to the band's sound. His departure is noticeable on the album material, but I think that they could still play well live without him.
2. A lot of people on here like the first era of RHCP (Mother's Milk, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, etc.) and really hate what they've become. The same goes for the second era of their music (Californication, etc.) and also hate what they've become.
When a band has changed sounds so often, fans of older material often resent it and feel betrayed by the band. This has happened to me with many bands, and I try to instead take the approach that they are changing as musicians and people, and thus so is their music. Sometimes it moves in a direction away from you, and while it sucks, it is a part of life. I understand the resentment for this reason, but it's not like they "sold out" and make shitty dime-a-dozen pop songs now or something.
3. On top of that last reason, many people who don't like (or even don't know) their old stuff do like their new stuff. Different people have different tastes, and if their new stuff aligns more with someone's tastes, then I have no problem with that. However, many long-time fans hate that people love a band for a sound that they themselves don't like. While I understand that anger, I think it can be way too harsh considering most of these people are just liking something because they like it.
4. RHCP are one of the biggest bands in the past 20-30 years that still tour. That by itself doesn't create the hate, but many people do tend to hate something that gets popular if they liked it beforehand. I know it's the old hipster joke, but I think many people do feel resentment toward others only finding out about a band because they're big now (I, too, am guilty of this sometimes). If they still made the same music they did before, then it would be a lot harder to hate them for getting big, but the evolution of their sound makes it a lot easier.
5. The last reason, in the context of Bonnaroo, is that they would take a precious headlining spot. Out of 3, 1 always goes to a jam band, which leaves only 2 big spots for those of us who don't care much for jam bands. Most years I've been (2007-the present), I've not cared about a single headliner. The only ones I've seen have been Tool and the Police (07), Stevie Wonder (10) and Arcade Fire and Eminem (11). That averages 1 per year, with 2 in a row where I didn't see any. I definitely get way more excited about Roo when I see a headliner on there that I care a lot about. (I know I'll get a lot of hate on here, but I could never really get into Pearl Jam. I also planned to see Metallica, but my head was not in the right place to make it to that show).
All that being said, I would love RHCP on the farm for a few reasons:
1. As much as I don't care for most of their recent songs, BSSM and Californication were some very formative albums in my childhood. Even By the Way was too a bit later, to some extent. I also love their older stuff (Uplift Mofo, Mother's Milk), although I didn't get into it until I was about 15 or 16. A lot of music I listened to back then I wouldn't like if I heard today, but that doesn't hold for RHCP.
2. I've never seen them live. They might be my favorite band that is still playing live shows that I've never seen. The only band that probably outranks them here is Gorillaz.
3. In terms of roo headliners, it could be a lot worse. I'd take RHCP over any other potentially realistic headliner discussed in here these days, except Radiohead, Prince, or Paul McCartney. Even then, I'd be okay with it because I've seen all of them except for Prince. It's not like we're getting the Kings of Leon or something.
4. It would get a lot of my friends who are always on the fence to buy a damn ticket and go with me. Let's face it, everyone who grew up in the 80's/90's/00's knows and loves RHCP. They are one of the most popular, prolific, and talented bands of the past quarter century. Their range of styles and the depth of their catalog could make for a great, lengthy Roo set.
5. I get goosebumps imagining 80,000 people singing along to under the Bridge. It wouldn't be as good as Arcade Fire playing Wake Up (my gf and I talked about that for months before that, even years as we considered the possibility of them playing, albeit not expecting them to headline), but it would certainly be an experience I'd remember for the rest of my life.
It felt kind of cathartic to discuss those reasons. For one, I hope it happens. I think it would be a fun time. And as long as they keep touring, it's going to happen at some point. The real question is when.
They just aren't as interesting for me anymore. I grew up on those guys and fell in love with Frusciante's modern take on Hendrix's style of playing. Each time i saw those guys live, John stole the show. The new stuff sounds waaaaay to empty to me and I can't see their new live show being much different. Not saying I wouldn't want them to HL because there's plenty of other terrible acts that could end up there. I would probably just skip their set this time.

i too find the new Chili Peppers album pretty forgettable . If they came, i'd check their set out if they were headlining, or if they weren't up against something i enjoyed more. Their not on my wishlist this year at all however.
Speculation, but they seem like a very Bonnaroo-friendly band that's never headlined and it touring next year but doesn't yet have announced dates for June.
There are only so many big, modern rock bands that could headline, and RHCP is one of them, and they seem more likely at this point than most others.
Radiohead, FooFighters, Coldplay, and The Killers all seem possible too.
Green Day and Muse are longer shots.
After that the list of possibilities begins to thin out. Maybe Soundgarden?
i dont know why Muse would be a longer shot. they have headlined quite a few festivals and have never been at the fest. id say they would be very likely on their next tour.
But nobody expects their next tour to be this summer. Their touring in support of their last album lasted a ridiculously long time and it looks like they're taking a break and then going into the studio.
I imagine Muse will eventually headline, but likely not this year.

I grew up a fan of RHCP and have seen them 3 times (One Hot Minute, Californication, and By The Way). They have never impressed me live and have always been blown out by their tour openers. I stopped liking them after Californication. That being said, I do think they are also Roo friendly and are big enough to take Friday night. I think its quite possible we might see them in the top three of the line-up and I will be using that set time to prep for the LN hours

If they play, they're going to have the number one spot, unopposed on Saturday night. RHCP is one of the biggest touring bands in the world right now, whether or not this board likes them.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo performing Graceland could close it out, but I would think they would want that show somewhere on Saturday like Buffalo Springfield was. Also, I think the Chili Peppers took a pretty decent dive in popularity once Frusciante left. New album didn't get nearly the coverage Stadium Arcadium did. I doubt they would be a guarantee for the Saturday night spot seeing as Metallica played Friday and are the closest comparison for a Roo headliner (new band member, last album was mediocre, etc.).
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

Buffalo Springfield's schedule position and stage choice were arguably the biggest mistake the fest made this year. Saying that, I hope they wouldn't repeat that folly.
I just picture chilling out Sunday night, and Paul would be a great way to wind down, and for me at least, be a very suitable performer to break the Sunday night jam tradition.
Sigur would be a great festie band. And I didn't say I wanted Janes addiction to play. I just think its probable, what with their following and new album.
I would love to see Jane's Addiction, but I just can't see Perry playing a competing festival. I don't get the hate for them on here, I would want them 100000x over RHCP.
Yeah KM. I wasn't implying Which Stage, even though they are dumb enough to do it. I could see that show before someone like Phish or Prince on Saturday or as the Sunday closer but def. A main stage act in that form.
