Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
And really there's complaints that the mods are TOO EASY GOING? This is easily the strictest forum I've ever been a part of and it's a BONNAROO forum for Christ sakes. A place where anything goes
Not so much that they are easy going. More that they aren't around/don't do anything. There have been plenty of those complaints before.
What do you want from me? We get complaints that the mods let too many things slide so I'm told to make sure we're on top of things.
If I see a post with curses then I have to edit it. We just banned a person for saying racial slurs too much and we also had someone change their signature GIF because it had a homophobic word in it. I know curses aren't exactly the same thing but they are banned words. Not my decision.
I've even had to ask Juggs in the past to stop breaking the word filter by using the "workaround" and he said he'd comply but that he's not the only one that does it. I understand that and we can't just say "some people can break the rules and some can't". I know that we can't enforce it all the time 100% (can't read everything in every thread) but we're supposed to when we see it.
Sorry I'm lame
I didn't say you were lame, I said what you were doing was lame.
I just think it looks like you're going out of your way now to enforce everything. People found the filters infantilizing, they worked around them, now you're editing people's posts. It looks bad when there's an edit and it's not by the original poster.
The thing about the filters that everyone forgets is that it allows people who have filtered internet at work to continue to enjoy the forum. It seems a little unfair to take that from people so you can cuss and feel like a real grown up......
So what do you suggest we do to stop people from going around the word filters? I'm open to suggestions.
Why is it a problem that people found a loophole in the coding of the board?
Look, if our biggest concern here is people being able to read at work, I'm not really for it. This may bite me in the ass someday when/if I work in an office, but I think the filters are silly and make this board look bad.

Take it up with Adam.
I never liked them really either but I also realized I don't need to bypass them to get across what I'm trying to say.
I can see both sides of it. I definitely understand where ITM is coming from, but I do agree that it looks bad when a post is edited by someone other than the poster.

That's unfortunate. Because I'm on inforoo all day at work. As are many others.

I am sorry you are losing street cred with the other boards man. I still think it is pretty selfish to have people lose access to inforoo over that. I guess I am too old to care whether or not I am "cool" anymore.
Maybe I'm naive or just an idiot, but what do the word filters actually do for people at work?
Do people's IT departments search your internet browsing history for websites that contain curse words?
I would think that simply seeing 500 "inforoo" or "proboards" line items in a history would be more damaging than some random person throwing an F-bomb into a post.
I clearly do not work with computers or know if companies actually do search for curse words, but that seems like an incredible waste of time & resources.
I realize work emails are a different story, but if your company doesn't block out an internet forum, do you really think they care if someone curses on it?
Edit: as I typed this, my answer got posted.

Is it really that big of a deal? REALLY?
Yea, it's kind of a big deal that posts are being edited by moderators on the board.

ITM is just doing his job, as our the other mods. This was decreed by someone above him. Blasting him for doing his job isn't helping anything. As ITM suggested, take it to the big man.

This is in the realm of the work I do all day. There are plenty of filters that will block sites with profanity. Also once they pick it up those sites are added to global lists so that if one place blocks you, unintentionally 300 other places are as well.

Questions about the "why" of the word filter again must be brought up with the owners of the site. I'm not sure of the reasons for them or how they work.
I was just told if someone breaks a rule then it should be moderated.
What is silly and makes poeple look bad is when people actually have to put more effort into a post, than just typing it out, just for their curse words to show up. I mean, really? Is it really that important for your curse words to show up? Is it really that big of a deal?
The people on here that know me IRL know that I have the mouth of a sailor. About every third or fourth word out of my mouth is a curse word. But I am not going to go out of my, while typing on a forum, to make sure that curse words show up. To me that is just ridiculous and when people cry about their curse words being filtered, I just tend to think those people got bigger issues in their life than a silly word filter on a message board.

The easiest solution is for people to not go out of their way to use the workaround.

That's a really big jump to make when we're all just discussing something.

There will always be things you or anybody else does not like. I never had a problem with the filters myself. I just do not understand why people have such a need to see or type curse words? I have nothing against them myself but the filter was put in place for a reason. Bypassing it on purpose is not acceptable, it is a rule and we would hope users will respect that. It makes the board look bad? I respect your opinion but I fail to see how it makes us look bad. I think more people laugh about it, more than anything. I just fail to see why this a big enough issue to have a huge discussion about it?

I'm not arguing for either side of this, but I would like to point out that the words that replace the curse words are nonsensical and make the post look a little dumber. I've never understood why they aren't just replaced with f***, s***, etc. Just saying.

It's not the filters really, it's that a mod is editing posts that aren't theirs.

As an aside, what if we use the workaround for an instance in which a filtered word is appropriate, i.e. George Bush's vice president or Melville's greatest work? I'm just curious. Rules is rules, and this one doesn't effect me enough to get worked up about it.

Well, thats just me, I find it really strange that people put so much stock in curse words and making sure they show up. The extra (no matter how small) amount of work you have to put to make it show up is telling to me.
I promise you in ten years, curse words wont be that big of a deal to you.

I've had any variety of filters in my various places of employment, and I've never had one that autoblocked any website that might contain a curse word. Generally, filters tend to block specific genres of sites (entertainment sites, social media, sports sites, pron, etc), or a specific list of websites designated by the person running the filter, but I've never heard of a text filter that will block a person from viewing a site containing inappropriate language.
For instance, would a person with such a filter be able to visit Wikipedia? If you were to do a comprehensive search of that site, you would be able to find listings for many words which would likely be deemed inappropriate. Personally, I don't think it's a worry. If someone's employer doesn't have Inforoo on a blocked list, it's highly unlikely that the presence of curse words would affect that.
This is not really how it works anymore. When you install content filtering it comes with a subscription like antivirus software. This allows them to fix things like letting you look at a site about KFC's juicy breasts, but stops you from reading an article on a porn site about juicy breasts. Once a filter either finds something it does not like, or someone reports a site it will be added to the subscription and potentially be blocked everywhere.
If some of you remember my friend who camped with us last year she is a teacher, and recently inforoo has been blocked by the Williamson county school system.
I want to curse more on this board! cause I am Cursed! lol we should all start throwing down hexes on each other! I hear in Australia when and Aborigine pisses off a Shaman or something they get a stick thrown at them and there are documented cases of these victims going home and dropping dead etc. usually when they take their blood in the few documented cases of it there are elevated levels of all kinds of bad things in the blood stream these people freak the fuck out and induce their own heart attacks! I want to throw a stick at a Wook and see what happens!

I'll grant you that. I think maybe it's just us being silly and trying to keep things light
If having lots of ***s would appease people working around the filter, I don't think it would be a problem for us to change it. Although at the same time, you can type out as many self edited *** words as you want.
