My friend had a bunch of clothes and stuff stolen out of her tent in 2008
I don't leave anything remotely important out at camp, always locked in my car
I also have a little cheap radio I like to leave on low volume when I am away from camp, I like to think it makes unsavory passerby's think someone is in the vicinity
And my car keys are ALWAYS in my pocket. I would never leave them any place else at a festival. If you want to be extra careful, attach them to a belt/wallet chain. And if you are with other people, give one of them your spare. If you are alone, maybe one of those magnetic "hide-a-keys' hidden underneath the car for the spare set? I am terrified of losing my keys at Bonnaroo, I check to see that I still have them at least 1000 times a day
Remember your there with 70 to 80 thousand other people not all of them are as honest as you are. Remember you are ther for a GREAT time so be causous not paranoid. Paranoia WILL ruin your GREAT time causousness will enhance your time. Because when your causaus your more apt to be safe or act in a safer manner than at a bonfire in your backyard.

Sunday night last year we went back to our camp during DMB and we heard someone rustling around in our neighbors tent. We thought it was them until we heard someone go "Who's there?" and then this crazy crackhead guy literally busted out of the side of their tent and took off running! It was so crazy. We all just stood there stunned and freaked out for like 2 or 3 minutes and by that time the guy was long gone. The neighbors ended up coming back about 15 minutes later and we told them what happened. Luckily they didn't have anything in their tent except an empty purse so they didn't lose anything but their tent was ruined.
Moral of the story: Yes there is crime/theft there so be smart and don't leave anything of value out in the open or in your tent.

I left my coleman outdoor grill outiside the entire day on sunday last year. When we got back, almost the whole campsite had cleared out except for us. I was amazed to find it sitting in the middle of the field undisturbed. Having said that, keep your shiz locked up.

In '09 I stopped several attempts on me and my neighbors in tent only.. first was a guy came up and said hi neighbor and then started to go into my sisters tent. I walked over and told him to move on and to stop opening the door and the guy stood there for like 3-5 min yelling at me that it was his tent. He didn't leave till I finally told him that it was my sisters. Another guy tried to go into my neighbors tent while they were sleeping and I walked over shinning lights and yelling and he took off and then two people were walking infront of me and went right to my tent door then stopped thinking I was just walking by (looked very suspicious) and bolted when I asked them to step aside so I could go into MY tent. Btw...all of the other neighbors got hit in one way or another. Two of the girls had to call thier parents to get gas money to go home...I usually run a bike lock through the handle of my cooler and a table and tool box (padlocked of course) so if they try to take one thing they will have to drag it all!!
^^^^ that is some serious leno! We have been lucky not to have been hit **knock on wood** I worry evey year that we will get hit 'cause I leave my grill, coffee pot and camp stove out. But, we have been lucky. Glad your we there to fend of those thievin' weiners!
As a rule of thumb lock what you wnt to keep in your car. My uncle took me on the road doing shows in the mid seventys and received many ass chewings and a couple of smacks to the head for forgetting to lock it up in the car as well as the car it's self.

Theft in VIP is not bad. I have been there for 2 years and never had anything grabbed; never heard of theft in VIP either. Also, to the posters who wondered about keys: buy a magnetic key box at Wal-Mart (about $2.00) and stick a spare in it and stick the box to the underside of your car. It will save your butt, as it has saved mine! Keep your regular set on you or in your carry bag. Lots of carry bags have clips that attach the key ring to the bag itself! That way when you get drunk and fall down, nothing falls out!!!
